Any Runners? (10K or marathon)

Way to Go FCollins! The treck to the 10K is really the hardest part of distance running. Even harder than a half-marathon. Just think about it. When you start running, one mile is pretty far. To make it from there to a 10K, you have to multiply your distance by more than 6 times!

However, to go from a 10K to a half-marathon only really requires you to double your distance. And then from a half-marathon to a marathon, you simply have to double your distance again. Okay, maybe it isn't that easy, but it really is easier than getting to the point where you can comfortably do a 10K.

I just finished a 5 mile run in 80 degree heat with the sun on my head, and now I want to vomit. I'm going to rest tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday, and then I run the half-marathon on Sunday. I can almost taste the fried clams and beer!

Well, the 5K was a success! I ended up with an unofficial time of 23:58, which is a personal best by 57 seconds. And thanks to it being a small race, I actually placed third in my age group and came home with my first (non-"finisher") running medal. :)

Edit - Ended up taking 3rd in my fencing tournament as well...it was a good day!

The half-marathon was great. I ran it in 1 hour 43 minutes 20 seconds (official time--I don't know yet what my chip time was). It was amazing to see the streets of Boston devoid of traffic.

And the fried clams and beer afterward were awesome! But I fear that they had so many calories (and I ate so much) that I probably gained weight on Sunday!

Mmmmm, calories . . .

The BolderBoulder was fun too! My wife and stuck together and finished side by side in just over an hour. The run itself was no problem whatsoever :) I heard that over 50,000 people registered to run/walk. It was amazing to see the river of runners in front and behind us. The finish line was at Folsom Field (where the CU Buffs play) and after we got some snacks (and a beer :p ) we sat in the stands and watched the people continiue to stream in. It was truely a mass of humanity.

We're looking forward to registering for our next race!

Nice job guys! Great to hear all of your races went well.

I signed up for my 5K today... a month (and still a lot of training) to go!

My 5K was this past Saturday. I saw earlier in the thread I wanted to run 7:00-7:15 pace... as I was training I found out that was a little ambitious for my first race in 7 years. Going into it my "revised" goal to run 7:30 pace (23:15-23:17) and crossed the finish line at... 23:16. At least that is what the finish line clock and my watch read. I looked at the results online today and it said my "official" time was 23:29... I understand a second or two difference in the finish line clock and the official time but 13 seconds? I did see two places in front of me was 23:16... I wonder if they somehow got some places mixed up. Oh well, no worries. Time to find another 5K!

1. Has anyone participated in the Columbus Marathon?
2. Has anyone participated in the Akron Marathon?

I'm going to do one of them this fall, and any input would be much appreciated. I've heard a bit about both, and I'm leaning towards C-bus - mostly because it's on October 21st, and I might score tickets to the MSU game. However, Akron is a month earlier, and I heard the route was nicer.

Anyone with any input?

I just looked at the route for Akron... starts near Akron U... follows a slight downgrade for quite a bit (Ohio & Erie Canal towpath)... then thru Sand Run Parkway which is always primo... nice shade... very pretty area... next slightly to moderately uphill... then flattens out thru nice homes... past Stan Hewitt... down Portage Path... onto Market St... BuckBackHome should hand you water at this point... past St V-M... then down a rather steep decline... into downtown... then flat thru downtown.. to Akron Aeros stadium...

Not a marathoner... heck, 26 miles is a long bike ride for me... but most of this run is downhill... and not many intense rises... FWIW

The Columbus Marathon also is very flat. It's very well-supported and organized too. Manfred loved it.

I ran Columbus in 2005. It's a fairly popular course for people trying to qualify for Boston because it is so flat. The only uphill stretch of note in the course is High Street, from German Village up to Dodridge. Even that isn't a steep hill, but it does go on for 5 miles.

I haven't run Akron, but I have heard from those who have that it's a tough course.

I'm leaning toward running one in the fall as well, possibly Columbus again.

Very nice! I'm not sure how you get a 13 second differential either, unless you started your watch at the start line rather than at the gun or something. Even then, in a 5K I'd be surprised if it was that much.

Is anyone doing the Lifeline Half Marathon downtown in a few weeks? I've had a slow return to training after being on vacation for a couple weeks w/o any running, but I'm still hoping to do it. Goal is sub-2:00, though I really just need it to get me off the couch and started on fall marathon training.
