Any Runners? (10K or marathon)

It's great to read about all of the running that folks on the BB are doing. Also, the advice so far has been great. I particularly want to throw my weight (hopefully not too much!) behind the recommendation to get (preferably 2) really good running shoes. Do not try to save money on these. They are really the only important piece of equipment you need.

Also, I want to stress the rule: increase no more than 10% of your distance each week. Add to this the fact that if you increase your speed, you should not increase your distance that week since you will be doing new damage to your body that it needs to deal with.

Try to build your base. I find that when I am trying to get in shape (at the end of winter, as the weather gets nice), running every other day allows me to get the rest I need to be healthy every time I go out. When I'm ready to start running more seriously, I start running two days in a row, and build up to three or four. The most important thing is getting a weekly base and consistently building on it (or at least not letting the mileage decrease).

I am currently running about 20-25 miles a week and will be doing a half marathon this Sunday. Wish me luck!

Meh, you're just doing it for the fried clams and beer afterwards. :p
Guilty as charged! I often bribe myself to get in my runs. For this weekend, some friends are running the half-marathon with me and we are planning on having a mighty party afterward! Mmmm, fried clams and beer (and wine and ice cream and . . .)!

Definitely good advice on building a base slowly.

Good luck this weekend! Is your race hilly like the marathon?

This race goes all over the place.

The courses for Boston's Run To Remember will take participants on a truly historic tour
of downtown Boston. Highlights include the State House, Government Center, Faneuil Hall,
Boston Common, The Public Garden, the Old State House, and Post Office Square.

For those venturing out on the half marathon course you have the added bonus of running
along Memorial Drive with the backdrop of the Boston skyline to inspire your every step.

It's interesting that the Boston Marathon goes through so little of the city of Boston, starting far to the west and simply running into Boston for the finish. It looks like this half-marathon will wend its way through much of the city. It should be really exciting.

But to be honest, I'm not doing this to see the city. Sushi was right. I want the damned clams and beer.

Okay, got my last 'long' training run in yesterday - and it was my best yet! I felt great the entire 6.2 miles and could have kept going! We're going to do ~3.7 miles on Friday then rest until Monday's 10k.

You're going to be doing half marathons before you know it. :)

Sounds like you're ready to go! I'm resting yesterday and today, then I have one more easy 2 miler tomorrow to warm up for Saturday morning.

Hope the weather cooperates.
Must be some interesting elevation changes in that race?
Great opportunity to over eat(drink?) without guilt! :tongue2:

Just for information I woke up this morning to.............SNOW! WTF?
We had 2 days of rain and fog and the higher elevations got quite a dumping of the white stuff! Current temp is ..45!

 The wife and I talked about that last night...

I guess 13.1 miles isn't as far as I once imagined.

I knew it!

Honestly, the half is a great distance. It doesn't give your body the pounding that a full marathon (and the training leading up to it) does, but it's plenty long to give a nice sense that you accomplished something big.

I hope to someday run another half. The last (and only) one I ran was painful. Hiking the Grand Canyon a week before the race is NOT a good idea. :bonk:
