Well, it's not exactly running, but I signed up for Ironman Coeur D'Alene 2009 today.

My wife was running the Boston marathon in OSU gear on Monday, and there was a guy near her for a lot of the race in a Michigan shirt. She said it was driving her crazy how many "Go Blues" she was hearing. So on the way up one of the hills, she caught up to him. He looked over, saw her shirt, and said, "Aw, come on. Your football team already crushes us every year, at least give me this!" She cruised past him and never saw him again.
Great showing by American runners: 1-4-7-8-9-10. Great win for Meb (1st American since 1982 to win the NY marathon), wonderful last 2 miles to break the Kenyan. I did expect a bit more out of Ryan Hall, he let the leaders get a little too far away on 1st Ave... great finish to take 4th though. Watching that gave me the 'itch' to attempt a marathon... some day. :)MolGenBuckeye;1581419; said:The NYC marathon is today, recap is on NBC at 2:00. Without spoiling it, it's worth watching if you follow running!

My family was so proud of him today and I got to see my little cousins hug him after he crossed the finish line. My mother was proud to see him do the sign of the cross after he won it too (we are avid Catholics).
Go Meb!
Wow, that's really cool.Merih;1582226; said:Short, pridefilled story...Meb is my uncle!

Definitely agree. His plan was not to get caught up in the "1st Avenue" surge and it bit him in the end. I do think he'll win a major marathon at some point though.MolGenBuckeye;1582208; said:Not just the first American to win NYC since 1982, but only the second American man to win ANY major since '83. Khannouchi in 2000 & 2002 is the only other winner since, as far as I can tell. Huge day for the Americans.
Hall seems very intent on running his own race. We were discussing after the race whether that's a good thing or not. It seems like a nice "safe" strategy that yields consistently good results, but it would be fun to see what would happen if he just paced with the leaders and hung on for dear life at the end!
As for the marathon, I don't know how you could watch that race and NOT get the 'itch'. Go for it, no time like the present. :)
Congrats! What an awesome feeling that must have been to see your uncle win a prestigious race like that! He ran a great race, staying out of the early surges and going with the leaders when he needed to. Here's hoping he continues his fine running into next year!Merih;1582226; said:Short, pridefilled story...Meb is my uncle!

I've been thinking about the marathon ever since the Columbus Marathon... went to the expo and that really got my blood flowing. I have quite a bit of work ahead if I want to do that though... have a 4 mile race on Thanksgiving Day and looking at a 10K end of Dec. or early Jan.

I actually had no idea Meb was Eritrean... I've been meaning to look up what he was for a while now. He has great national pride both for your home country and the US.Merih;1582329; said:Not only just our family is proud, but our entire nationality. We are from Eritrea (you guys should look it up sometime) and the whole country was rooting for him to succeed. When he took silver in Athens the other flag he had in his hand was the Eritrean flag.
Only thing I can criticize about Meb is that he's not an Ohio State fan
Go Bucks! Beat Penn State!
