Any Runners? (10K or marathon)

Thought you all might enjoy this one:

My wife was running the Boston marathon in OSU gear on Monday, and there was a guy near her for a lot of the race in a Michigan shirt. She said it was driving her crazy how many "Go Blues" she was hearing. So on the way up one of the hills, she caught up to him. He looked over, saw her shirt, and said, "Aw, come on. Your football team already crushes us every year, at least give me this!" She cruised past him and never saw him again.

Tell her that we said thanks for her service :)

The NYC marathon is today, recap is on NBC at 2:00. Without spoiling it, it's worth watching if you follow running!
Great showing by American runners: 1-4-7-8-9-10. Great win for Meb (1st American since 1982 to win the NY marathon), wonderful last 2 miles to break the Kenyan. I did expect a bit more out of Ryan Hall, he let the leaders get a little too far away on 1st Ave... great finish to take 4th though. Watching that gave me the 'itch' to attempt a marathon... some day. :)

Not just the first American to win NYC since 1982, but only the second American man to win ANY major since '83. Khannouchi in 2000 & 2002 is the only other winner since, as far as I can tell. Huge day for the Americans.

Hall seems very intent on running his own race. We were discussing after the race whether that's a good thing or not. It seems like a nice "safe" strategy that yields consistently good results, but it would be fun to see what would happen if he just paced with the leaders and hung on for dear life at the end!

As for the marathon, I don't know how you could watch that race and NOT get the 'itch'. Go for it, no time like the present. :)

Short, pridefilled story...Meb is my uncle!

My family was so proud of him today and I got to see my little cousins hug him after he crossed the finish line. My mother was proud to see him do the sign of the cross after he won it too (we are avid Catholics).

Go Meb!

Awesome!

My favorite part was Meb pointing to the "USA" on his singlet coming down the chute. It might have gotten a little dusty in front of the computer screen for a minute there...

I also enjoyed him talking to the guy in the bleachers with the "HALL" shirt on after the race, and he said he has that shirt too.

And hey, if he's ever in Columbus and wants to do a light jog (for him)/sprint (for me), you know where to find me! :wink2:

Wow, that's really cool.
Congrats to him from the whole US of A!

Definitely agree. His plan was not to get caught up in the "1st Avenue" surge and it bit him in the end. I do think he'll win a major marathon at some point though.

I've been thinking about the marathon ever since the Columbus Marathon... went to the expo and that really got my blood flowing. I have quite a bit of work ahead if I want to do that though... have a 4 mile race on Thanksgiving Day and looking at a 10K end of Dec. or early Jan.

Congrats! What an awesome feeling that must have been to see your uncle win a prestigious race like that! He ran a great race, staying out of the early surges and going with the leaders when he needed to. Here's hoping he continues his fine running into next year!

Meb, in racing and in life, knows his pace. He's such an even keel person it does him so much good in race situations.

I personally feel that he could have been one of the greats of the sport for even longer than he has been but our culture puts a HUGE importance on family. And believe me them little kids you see have a great dad who never let a race get in the way of life.

Not only just our family is proud, but our entire nationality. We are from Eritrea (you guys should look it up sometime) and the whole country was rooting for him to succeed. When he took silver in Athens the other flag he had in his hand was the Eritrean flag.

Only thing I can criticize about Meb is that he's not an Ohio State fan

Go Bucks! Beat Penn State!

I actually had no idea Meb was Eritrean... I've been meaning to look up what he was for a while now. He has great national pride both for your home country and the US.

<off topic>Are you familiar with Zersenay Tadese? He's been a lot of fun to watch the last few olympics. I had him as a darkhorse in '08 (not to win--nobody could beat Bekele--but to get a medal.. I really thought he mighta gotten bronze. I was wrong, but 5th aint bad). </off topic>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zersenay_Tadese

Yes I know of Zersenay, he's a great runner as well. I don't quite think he had the horses to win it, so he made the conscious decision to take the lead and hold it for a while. Got the announcers to say our country's name quite a bit, it was definately a cool thing to watch.

Meb loves both counties equally. One the one hand there is the history and heritage of Eritrea, and on the other hand are the opportunities and amazing life quality that the USA gave him. I'm in an equal situation. I love both countries. And of course I love Ohio State!

I am back training after 5 years off. Started when I was in Kona last month. Getting my mojo back.

Ran back to back 8 milers over the last 2 days, not that sore and that is a good sign. Still fat, still slow, but its starting to feel better. Going to start doing a few 10k's. Bet I cannot brake 42, uuuuugh.

Oh well, got to start somewhere. I am 50, so my PR's are behind me.

Going to run the Flying Pig in May just to finish it. Don't think I can drop a descent time with as little base as I have right now. Maybe sub 3:30 is realistic. Have to be careful of getting hurt. Don't need my knees or hips falling apart. Been there before.

Not sure I am going to be racing IM anytime soon. Might try next year after I have had some time to build a base. Would like to go over to Europe and do France, Austria or maybe South Africa.
