The question isn't if its hard to DH or not, the defense is factored in as far as his value to the team. A-rod can give you a gold glove caliber infielder, a respectable basestealer and is a better hitter than Ortiz all in 1 package. How can that not be more valuable than a 1 dimensional player who's 1 dimension isn't as good as A-rods?

The media has its dick hard to give the MVP to Ortiz but if they voted with their head A-Rod is clearly more valuable.

Why can't these sack of shit teams get into another giant brawl and get most of their players suspended for the playoffs.

What's really sad about the Yankees and Red Sox is their payroll to record ratio.

PayRod is the MVP over Papi.

1. It's Poppy, big Poppy, not Papi.... OK? I can live with "Poppy" Papi??? Why not dot the eye with a heart.... sheesh...
2. The whole DH v. guy who plays the whole game thing
3. PayRod is the better base runner
4. Sears makes a point about Rivera being the Yankee MVP... But still, Payrod is the offensive force that drives the Yanks, and while the MVP can go to a P or an RP, the award is clearly geared towards an offensive player. I think that's fair, since no hitter can with the Cy Young.
5. He (Payrod) looks better in shorts (Gets the homo vote)

All in all, looking strictly at their Offensive production I'd say it like this

Batting Average: Advantage Arod (.318 to .299)
Runs scored: Advantage Arod (122 - 118)
Hits: Advantage Arod 190 - 178
RBI: Advantage Ortiz (147 - 129)
HR: Push (47 - 47)
SB Advantage Arod (21 - 1)
OBP: Advantage Arod (.420 - .396)
Slg: Push (.605 - .605)
OPS: Advantage Arod (1.025 - 1.001)

So, Arod is the better performer at the plate. Add in the fact that the guy also plays 3B, and despite the 5 hole error last night, plays pretty damn well (Especially for a guy who's only played the position for 2 seasons) and the choice is obvious who the AL MVP is.

And it isn't David Ortiz. The guy can hit, don't get me wrong. He's just not as good as Arod.

I change it to Ortiz. I had other first (Vlad).

A-Rod is a better hitter than Ortiz and gives you a glove at a crucial position with good speed to boot. Also, even though they shouldn't the MVP voters will give A-rod extra points for his team beating Ortiz's team during the last weekend. Best offensive player on the best team and the thinking fans shoe in for MVP.

Then there are those who's opinions are based on what they hear in-game announcers and people like Stuart Scott or Jim Rome say.

A-Rod is a better hitter than Ortiz

There isn't a better clutch hitter in the game than David Ortiz. And it seems that A-Rod turns into Roy Hobbs only during blowouts. Without Big Papi, the Red Sox would struggle to be .500.

Also, even though they shouldn't the MVP voters will give A-rod extra points for his team beating Ortiz's team during the last weekend.

The weekend series is even at a game apiece. The rubber game's tomorrow.

I was surprised when the Yanks were said to clinch the division today, with their win and Cleveland's loss. I was expecting a playoff Monday if Boston won on Sunday. But that would just give Bosox the wild card. Blurb from FoxSports:

"Through a quirk in baseball's rules, the Yankees (95-66) won the division because of Cleveland's loss to Chicago in the AL Central. The loss by the Indians (93-68) eliminated the possibility of a three-way tie - and an unprecedented two-game, three-team tiebreaker - and gave New York the East by virtue of their 10-8 record against Boston (94-67)."

The division title may clinch the MVP for A-Rod.

A bunch of Boston homers here. This one isn't even close, as Jaxbuck pointed out, and it doesn't even matter that NY won the division. You're comparing a guy who only plays offense vs. a guy who plays offense and defense, and whose offensive output is better! Big Papi is clutch? Bullshit, Big Papi is half a baseball player. Sure, he's a good hitter, but when comparing him to someone who's every bit as good a hitter, and who also plays defense, and plays it well, there's simply no comparison.

edit: I see the points about most valuable player vs. best player. I don't buy it. Despite the acronym, the MVP is for the best player. A great player does not lose MVP status simply because he's surrounded by other great players who could win a lot of games without him.
