Flew cross country from Pittsburgh to Dallas and then to Orange county this past weekend and have to say a lot of things have changed since the last time I flew, most notably nobody checking ANY bags anymore. By the time we boarded there was no overhead bin space left, and my colleague and I both packed light.

Wasn't a huge fan of Dallas airport either. Got delayed on the flight back from Orange county and had to race to catch the connection and had to get on one of those tram things.

Its just amazing how little sense of urgency people have about little things like going through security, boarding in a timely manner, etc.

Welcome to the wonderful world of flying, where seemingly every passenger is cheap (which is the ONLY reason no one checks bags), slow, and not very bright.

Avoiding paying an extra $100+ just to check my bags for a roundtrip is not being "cheap". Hey, if you're happy paying for what you should be getting for free, knock yourself out.

With the fees that some of the airlines make you do to check a bag after you've already paid everything else, I guess I don't have a problem with being cheap.
Bingo. I wish the FAA would make it illegal for airlines to charge for your first two bags.

Luckily for us we got ours checked through on the way back from the west coast for no charge as they were anticipating a full flight, got our bags to our destination when we got home and it took literally 30 seconds to get them off the carousel. First time in a while I haven't had luggage issues.

Two ways to avoid bag fees...

Either have "status" on the airline or take your bag to the gate and since most of the flights are full then the gate agent will ask for volunteers to check baggage or once on board and you have no space for your bag then they will check it for free.....

How do you earn "status"? Through a frequent flyer mile program?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to pack my Blue Snowball mic so that I don't get dragged back to a dark interrogation room, because I know they'll see a decently sized sphere on the x-ray and freak the fuck out if I pack it in my checked baggage. If I pack it in my carry-on, it's a little hefty and they'll still probably freak unless I'm lucky and some tech/sound design/theater nerd is the TSA officer I get.

Yes, slight sarcasm, but I know I'll be "asked" about it, and need to figure out how to minimize the issue (short of not bringing it with me).

Flew last week with my wife, 4 year old, and 5 month old (yes, people have to travel with little kids, and mine are perfect on flights). Got to the Ft. Myers airport at 6:30 for an 8:45 flight (because of kids). The gate agent told us our flight was delayed 2 hours. I thought no big deal, we'll just stop by the restaurant and wait.

I need to mention when flying with 2 little kids you need a sherpa to get through the airport as I checked 2 items at the counter, 4 items at the gate (stroller, 2 car seats, and 1 base), in addition to our 3 carry ons. Security is crazy because you have to take the baby out of the car seat, fold up the stroller and put it through the scanner. We had a line about 15 feet long of things to be scanned.... ugh. 6 oz of Baby formula was tested for explosives.

When we got to the gate, the agent told me the flight was delayed until 11:30 and within a few minutes after that they announced the flight was going to take off at 12:30.

We got on the plane at 1:00 AM and arrived in Columbus at 3:45 AM, home in bed at 4:30, and my 4 year old woke me up at 7:00. Nice.

Good news, 3 free airplane tickets for the wait. To be honest, I'll be delayed 5 hours every time I fly if it means getting a $1000 in free tickets.

Btw, we've flown airtran 4 times and twice received free tickets due to bad delays - so at least they're good at that.
