First, thank you Clarity for taking this very ambitious project into your hands... you along with many other dedicated volunteers have turned this into the best Ohio State fan site on the net!

As for the issue at hand...
  1. If adding ad banners is the way to go your proposal is the best way to go about it... no intrusive and not in-your-face. These are the kinds of ads I don't mind and would may actually look at what they are offering (in contrast to the "CLICK ME!!!!" or rapidly flashing ads).
  2. As I looked at some of the other fan sites you linked most of them looked fine from the standpoint of ad service (site design for some of them is another issue). If this is what needs done SportsWar is definitely the way to go as it appears, as you have stated, each board still has its own personality and style.

First off I want to thank Clarity like everyone else here. While everyone wants to tell Clarity it is his site and do what he needs to do I really appreciate the fact that Clarity comes to us first to basically ask permission. That is what makes this site second to none. Despite your issues you go out of your way to confirm this site is run by the people.

Now, about the ads. While staying ad free is/was a noble cause the times we live in prevent that. A website that has grown to this size HAS to cost a ton. Not only money but time by everyone involved. Unless one is independently wealthy it is too much to ask one person to carry that burden.

Also I admire your stance on what had to be sale pitches from advertisers. Seriously this has become the #1 Ohio State site and with the fan base this has to be some serious high pitch salesman drooling at getting this site. A feather in the cap so to speak.

The great part of all of this is you found an advertiser that has the same beliefs as you. Now that sounds like a perfect marriage. The ads at the sites you linked aren't bad. Like you I hate popups and worse are those flash ones that expand to cover the content.

Now about the current situation. I would hate for BP to burden you with any costs at all. It is not right nor fair. If a few banner ads helps generate enough revenue to cover all the costs of BP then you should do it. If it actually gives you more than it costs and gives you something for your pocket than so be it. Consider it reimbursement for all that you have spent to make BP what it is today.

Hopefully in the near future everything will turn around health wise for you. And when that day comes and money is no longer an issue for you maybe that small amount you make from these ads over the costs can then go back into BP to serve the next need like servers or other charitable needs that may pop up that can help BP grow even further.

In summary... do it Clarity. As long as the ads are within good taste and don't dominate the page, do it. Not for you, but to make sure your idea continues on in the future. Because what would be worse is BP having to close or be sold.

Take care and get better.

clarity, i am going to echo many of the points already stated. i frequent tidefans.com often and don't particularly like the pop-ups when you leave the site, but when given the choice of putting two relevant banner ads tactfully on the site or no bp, i say it is a "no-brainer." and being that these banner ads might also provide you more time to devote on the site, or something actually important like your health, i feel it is the best decision at this point. all of this stress cannot have a positive effect on you, not even if you were in perfect health. i am not familiar with the whole situation, but hope everything works out well for you. thanks for all you have done with bp and giving us the privilege to voice our opinions.

take care man.

I am fine with anything you need to do clarity, i dont think the drives have been that forceful or invasive. I personally have felt really terrible that i havent been able to donate in the last couple because my own situation is all that financially stable. However, the fact that i havent done so and no one has lynched me should prove you have been anything but pushy with it. If you need ads put them in. Also, as soon as in am stable I hope to donate more to this site since about 75% of my internet time is spent on this site. please at leave up the option for more donations.

I have no objection to the banners you have mentioned. In fact, I think it's good to have them if they are relevant to college football fandom and Ohio State. Many times you can find stuff through those ads that you can't find anywhere else. I say go for it and don't look back.

Given the situation Clarity faces, I have zero problem w/ any ad, and respect the fact that we, as members of the community were given a say. I would visit here regardless of the ads, but I also appreciate that they ads will not be the insane pop-ups that proliferate on other sites. Go for-just make sure they are for cool stuff that we will like!!!!!

ads hell no, thats a bad idea, i dont care what you say.... no really i'm just kidding. the ads would be a good idea, with as much traffic comes through here its a no brainer for them to want to be on here, and if it helps you then it helps BP. Go for it! and thanks for asking, its cool to have this "dysfunctional family" feel

Sell as many ads as you need. The ads mentioned certainly won't be obnoxious. But, if the situation gets to the point that pop-ups are necessary, so be it. Sell as many as you can. We're all in this together and not a single decent person would gripe about dealing with pop-ups (or any other adverts) while knowing that this is what it takes to keep this place running. You do what you need to do. Take care and best wishes.

Also, I'm all for continuing the fundraising efforts, even with advertising being sold.
