Clarity I don't think I can add much that anyone else hasn't said. I'm pulling for everything to work out for you. I'm not sure if either of these ideas have been tossed around before. If they have feel free to proclaim me a late to the party idiot. I've seen on other sites where you can click a link through Amazon buy something on there and BP would get a portion of what was purchased. This seems like a very non-invasive and hassle free way to raise some money for the site. I know I'm frequently buying stuff off of Amazon and would love to be able to hook BP up with some money by doing it. I don't think it costs anything to do it or costs any extra on the amazon purchase. Another thing possibly to consider via the adds would be to put get some of the google style adds. Those always seem fairly non-invasive compared to some of the stuff out there.

I didn't read everyone's posts, so I may be repeating a lot of what other people are saying. I think that my least-favorite thing on the internet is pop-up ads. My computer at work is very slow, and pop-up ads have a good chance to freeze that piece of garbage. (Of course, the argument could be made that I should be doing work at work, and I should come home to check out BP. Well, that ain't gonna happen, Bub!) But if I understand you right, the banner ads aren't new windows opening from the depths of hell. They're just added to the actual site, and I can choose to ignore them the same way that I can choose to ignore a thread that doesn't sound interesting to me. If that's the case, and it helps this site stay up, then I say, without hesitation, do it.

Clarity:
FWIW, slam -dunk! This is just a reality of the broadband experience. Far less intrusive than trying to assimilate on BN again! Plus, if advertising could turn a profit, follow thru! High ethics on your part, but you need no ones OK.
I hope things turn better!

I wouldn't have any problems with having a few Ad banners or what not. Whatever it takes to keep things running and to lighten to load of all of the dedicated supporters on here. Your efforts are most certainly appreciated.

I'm realitively new here and know nothing of your personal history, but I love the sight and will continue to visit regardless of ads, banners, and the like. I've been a lurker and sometime poster on BN for close to 5 years. Even though I enjoy their sight, I've never considered joining their premium. Based on my experience here, I would sign up for a premium, if you choose to go that way as well.

i see no harm in taking on banners to support the site. this is a forum a lot of people enjoy and not being able to keep it running would be tragic. i personally don't have the funds to assist you in your efforts to continue the site so dealing with a few banners is the least i can do to help.

good luck in your efforts no matter what choices you make. thank you for the site and all that it means to the buckeye community.

Right now I'm looking into (a) whether or not SportsWar would accept a situation that would only see some usergroups display ads, and (b) how much we could reasonably expect to bring in if only unregistered/not-logged-in viewers got the ads.

This scenario would allow us to avoid ads within the community, but serve them to visitors. Which, if practical, would be ideal in my opinion.

I believe there's also some sniffing around about sandgk's idea, which I would personally *love* to see come together.

Finally, I got a court date for the end of September.

1) No problem with the SportsWar stuff however that turns out.

2) No idea after reading this thread what sandgk's idea is. Can you share?

3) Have you thought about google ads much? I saw a very nice implementation of them over at http://www.clutchfans.net Every post on their forum has some google ads at the top and the first post in the thread has an ad tagged onto it. But it is very benign and mostly text based, so it fits well with the message board. They have traffic similar or more than this site, and it works real well for them. Might be worth a look as well. No problem for me if you implement a couple of these options even. Take care of yourself.

chuck_jax weigh-in

Clarity,

Chuck_jax here. I'm an almost daily lurker, sometimes a poster, and sometimes a doner. I know you don't want a rubber stamp.

Below is how annoyed I get at various invasive stuff on websites. 10=highest annoyance
1 = lowest annoyance.

spyware insertion = 10
pop-ups that move or change color = 8
stationary pop-ups = 6
ads or banners at the top or side = 2

My true feeling is that you have done a splended job with this site. I wish I could provide more than I have. In fact, I feel guilty for not having donated in a while. Whatever you need to do to keep the thing going is better than tanking it.

That said, if you need to have ads, and you are asking for my opinion, I would prefer ones that don't require me to find and click the close box. I would also ask that the ad didn't move as I scrolled down the page. I find these pretty annoying - to the point I usually give up on the website that has the ads.

Dude - facts are facts. You have been running a non-profit website that takes a lot of time and now a bit of money. I can come on here and benefit from it for free. It is a nice alternative/addition to the commerical sites. My OSU experience is better for having it. Please do what you have to do and don't feel bad about it.

Chuck_jax.
