Clarity,

I'm relatively new here, post wise anyway as personal problems have kept me from enjoying and contributing to this site until recently. Obviously I'm not in a position to tell others who have contributed so much more in so many other ways how the site should be run, however I wanted to say the devotion and concern that others have shown for you tells me what I need to know about you and I trust whatever you need to do will be the right thing. Ads, donations, do what it takes. My prayers are with you.

I think the majority of people here would like the site to remain ad-free but if it's what's best for the site as a whole in the long run then so be it. Like I said... it would bother me at all.

Whatever we need to do for the site is fine by me. I'm not crazy about the side banner idea... but would not fight it. However, I have a question:

Would a top & bottom banner bring in similar funding? Two ads would be featured, but the main (middle) content of the pages would still be ad-free.

There seems to be plenty of room in the top bar... and to the right of 'posting rules' down below.

I sent this with a couple of other ideas to Clarity in PM - I'm editing a little as the preliminary paragraphs will otherwise have a false context.

<hr>
My thought on your recent message is that it is time to take a realistic appraisal of your needs and the needs of the site; with greater weight being given to the former than the latter.

To the extent that banner ad impressions can help you in defraying administrative and upkeep expenses I suppose they have value. I do not mean to bad mouth an idea, make it still-born if you will, it is my contention that your needs, beyond site and network fees, will be far from covered by such a program. Note, I am not saying do not do this. What I am saying is that you may not see the full relief you need by such a set of measures.
EDIT: Thus, the other measures we willingly take to help site upkeep - and other personal needs should not stop, they should complement your new cash stream for they will be needed.

So, in summary, if it helps the site, and helps you defray costs, then go for it. We (OK, I) will depend on you to implement this with good taste and wish you luck in getting the highest rates and largest number of impressions. I would urge that other means of support be developed that are also dependable, do not dun the same members of this Buckeye congregation, and yield what you deserve from this, your (our) creation.
EDIT: Before sharing those "other" ideas I'd like a few folk to review a simple-minded pitch I made to Clarity - a trial balloon that may be a long time in coming into being. Till then, or even after those "other means of support" develop, I and, I can tell from the foregoing, many BPers will still chip in a manner that we see fit. Hope you don't mind :wink2:

From experience in getting banners placed (and costed) for a couple of sites in the great dot.com splurge top price goes to most visible. Top of page, side of main column, either side, will get the premium placement dollars. Bottom of page ads are less highly favored.

Clarity, I can't imagine that a banner ad would be a problem for anyone. What would be a problem is losing BP or seeing it change hands to someone who would not manage it with your ethos. This is a very special place and you can count on my support, whatever you decide.

The only ads that truely bug me are pop-ups. I know you're something of a one man army against them as well, so I am confident that if you're "OK" with this group, I will be OK with this group as well.

Frankly, even if BP ends up with pop ups, I'll still come here as frequently as I do now.

Agreed...heck, there are some websites that have pop-ups, but for a buck or two a month, you can subscribe and avoid them. I don't really care, but if anything could be avoided, I'd say pop-ups are at the top of the list.

This may seem stupid, but I couldn't be offered enough money to infect (and that's what it would be) this site with pop-ups.

I'm also intolerant on unsolicited mail, selling or sharing email addresses, any forced media (I don't mind if an ad is in video form, as long as it doesn't stream unless I tell it to), or ads that extend out beyond their prescribed boundaries. An instant dealbreaker with me, on any site, is some sort of cutsey flash thing that jumps out in front of whatever I'm reading, obscuring the text, and forcing me to interact with it. Uniformly, I don't, I just close the browser window. Needless to say, I stopped visiting ESPN quite some time ago.

So we won't be seeing that garbage here, even if we do see ads. I just loaded the UVA site, and their side banner was for their university bookstore. Will have links later for other sites so we can all check them out.

As far as paying to avoid ads, I don't really see the point. I'll tell anyone who wants to listen how to edit their HOSTS file to block all ads free, and speed up their browsing experience to boot.

Regarding the side bar. I would probably make some use of that for the site mechanics as well so it at least served some purpose. One thing I had in mind was a built-in IM type deal for online user interaction, but that's all cart before the horse stuff.

If it comes down to it, just pay for your v(irtual) ads in v(irtual)cash.

Saying "ads are a horrific idea, and here's why" is not in any way tantamount to launching an attack on me.
So:
If we, or you, end up not liking the idea of having banners and whatnot, I figure we (you) can always go back after both the contract ends and your situation stabilizes.

+ I always thought it was cool that the site didn't have any advertising. But that was far and away the least of the reasons for visiting.

+ From what you said the site will probably be better off by getting the extra income.

= Go for it.

I happen to be a firm believer in the philosophy, "if it ain't broke......" however, life happens and some times things require adaptions.... things happen out of our control, and we need to make adjustments and concessions to make life the best we can with what we have been handed. Therefore, I feel that whatever needs to be done SHOULD be done. Thank you very much for even taking into consideration what our opinions are, that right there screams volumes of the type of man you are. BP is what it is because of the people here, the tolerance of opposing views, the maturity and childish behaviour that, for the most part, exist in harmony, the friendships that have been formed and for the love of the Buckeyes...

"One Buckeye Down all Buckeyes Down"

Do what needs to be done and we will all respect you for it.. if we lose a few along the way they didn't belong here anyways.

Clarity,

You have earned the right to do what is best for you and your family. This site is a privaledge and not a "right", and that's just what it is...a website. Granted, we are one big family here, but you need to take care of your health and and your immediate family before anything else. We'll deal with whatever changes that brings.

God bless you and your family.
