Did I mention this place is 100% free?

If some ads will lessen the financial burden in Clarity's life and possibly open some doors of opportunity, I don't think anyone with an ounce of appreciation or common sense can possibly take issue with this decision.

Do what needs to be done and, for once, put yourself ahead of others.

Well put. I don't post here as much as I would like working as much as I do, as well as going through a really dark time in my life right now (though admittedly one nowhere near what Clarity is/was going through). But whatever you need to do to keep this great site free and relieve your burden more power to you. There are some great people here, some I've met, some I haven't. This is an outstanding OSU community and we need to keep it readily accesible for all to enjoy.

You have the best buckeye site on the web, bar none. Clarity there are so many ads on every site that a banner on BP would hardly be noticeable. I would say do as necessary for your situation, I really can't see it being a big deal to anyone. As other have said pop-ups are the worst, the other things are easily tolerable. Good luck to you and your family.

C-Dog,

I'd feel worse if you didn't implement some sort of advertising on the site. Ads targeted to OSU and college football fans are far from the end of the world.

Any idea how text-based ads (from Google or other provider) would pay vs. banner ads? I don't mind either as long as they "mind their own business" which I know won't be a problem.

I took a look at the list of sites in the SportsWar network, and honestly I couldn't find anything objectionable on any of the sites. I say go for it.

Here's the SportsWar Network. A few of them, like Huskerpedia, are very familiar names. Feel free to take a look around, and come back here with honest perspective on the ad "footprint". Not all of them seem to have the ad content plugged in, Hornsfans.com, for example, seems to still have their own stuff in place, which includes pop-ups.

In the meantime, this discussion gave me an idea that would be -- well, perfect -- if they'd go for it, but I have to mine data from the logs first to see if it's even practical.

I didn't see any ads at all on the MSU board (might be because I have scripts and ActiveX disabled in my browser). The Minnesota board looks like it only has ads on the top (and only one) and nothing on the side (Arkansas, too). The PSU site wasn't too bad, because there was still a lot of board content readble despite the side ad...you may have to reduce the size of BP's default font to look similar, if you choose to include sidebar ads.

If we include sidebar ads, we'll definitely need to keep user info above the posts, and not on the side like many other sites (such as LSU), so we can not have the content of the post too compressed. We also want avoid any side-scrolling (several sites had that).

Clarity,
First and foremost, Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have never met a person that cares sooo much about the input of common BP posters( like me) on this site. I am in FULL support of whatever decision is made. I am truely humbled by your leadership, and your sincerity. You do what you deem as nessasary. I am just a speck on this site and soooo much love what you and the admin. are doing. You are in my prayers and I pray the best for you. You are truely a example of "Unselfishness". Bless you in what you think, and do. You have my support. Take care.
Sincerly,
Moose

I thought that adding "select" banner advertising was a viable and logical plan of action back in the Spring and I fully support the idea now. Not that I want to down-play anyone else's hesitation to such a 'change in site philosophy', but I just thought it seemed like a very good & long-term solution to the current challenges we face as a community (both for Clarity and the site) with very limited downside imo.

I like the idea in addition to the periodic BP fund raiser.

Clarity,

Your site, you should feel to do as you wish. I have no problem with the ads.

If you want honest feedback, start a poll on if people prefer the banners or not. Make it an anonymous poll.

That way they don't have to post their opinion with their name linked to it.

I have no problems with the ads. Truth be told, our firewall at work just blocks them anyway, so I get little stop signs where the ads should be.

Could you also operate a little tOSU online store? That way we could buy Buckeye stuff here, and the proceeds would benefit you and the site. Maybe do something that wouldn't require you to actually hold inventory, but that the orders could just rout to the dropshippers or manufacturers. I don't know how feasible this might be.
