97.1 The Fan (official thread)

Pretty much this. It's entertainment, and it would get pretty boring if everyone agreed on everything all the time. Your email is the exact reason they rant about the "1%'ers". There's no reason you can't be honest every once in a while about a group of fans, or about a teams' performance on the field. They're realistic with their expectations of the Buckeyes, and they've often scolded the fans for one reason or another (being flat at home games, not showing up for basketball games), and the few that do in fact seem to drink the Kool-aid play right into what they're selling.

The 1%rs say crazier shit than my e mail and I dont drink the kool aid....what I say stands...they fucking suck and this market is prime for comp

Common Man and Torg are so bad I actually listen to Doug Gottlieb on the drive home most days (Fox 1230 is really not an option for SPORTS radio). Mark the Shark had a nice Buckeye homer alternative a couple years, but there's just no breaking the Wolfe (WBNS) monopoly in the central Ohio market.

I dont usually start threads so I'm sorry if this is the wrong place...this is an e mail exchange I got into with MY GUY Mike Ricordoti

it really seems like this market is prime for a show with a LeCharles Bently or somthing but these guys suck....talking about baseball and the Cubs in the Columbus market...

So let me get this straight--you got into a war of words and bad spelling with the host of a radio show you claim to dislike and you're bragging about it?

Why do people take them seriously? They don't claim to be experts. They know they say stupid shit. Nobody should listen to them for educational reasons, just entertainment. I'm far more annoyed by Dimitrious Stanley's arrogance and refusal to accept when he's wrong. He might be the worst radio host I've ever heard, and he's an ex-player. Ricordati and Torg don't even take themselves seriously. I understand why people don't like them, but I don't understand why people get upset about them. They're on the air during that time because they say stupid shit to piss people off. I think it's entertaining. More entertaining than the same old rock songs, or Justin Bieber.

Dimitrious can be hard-headed, CM and the T have been thoroughly discussed, and we non-satellite people are also "held hostage" to Colin Cowherd if we want to listen to sports radio in the morning. The only good show on there is Mike and Mike, and I always sleep through that.

But far and away the worst of them all, for me, is Neft at Night.

It's the way always starts his show with some short, obvious question-of-the-day that he wants people to call in and discuss. But he doesn't just say the question - he has to add a million fucking qualifiers and clarifications to it. By the time he starts taking calls there have been two commercial breaks and I want to shoot someone, usually myself.

On top of that his voice kills me as he draws out every third word extremely long. Dude, you are a professional radio host, take some fucking classes on how to fucking talk.

Thanks OP, I wanted to get that off my chest for awhile now, didn't want to start a whole new thread for that radio "personality."

Craig Krenzel is on their show. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

I'm strong enough and educated enough to form my own opinions, and don't mind when they say stupid things that I completely disagree with. If I want news about the Buckeyes, I come to BP and do my own research.

I agree that some of the things they say and do are so outrageous, that they are meant only to stir up people. But at the same time if they just sat there and talked Xs and Os and football theory, with only logic and informed opinions, then it would be boring for 90% of their listeners and they would get crap ratings.

I listen to them in the car, as my radio usually is on 97.1, and sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I don't. Obviously they have the attitude that they are always right, and anybody who has a different opinion is an idiot, but that's just what talk entertainment has become today. It seems like rarely is anybody on the radio anymore that is actually rational and down to Earth. They obviously try to offend people in an attempt to get ratings. I can understand why these things really turn off a lot of Buckeye fans. I guess it just doesn't bother me personally as much.

I'm sure you can get better analysis by switching off the radio and talking to yourself.

If I could, I'd be able to be a lot more insightful on here. That being said, I don't listen to them. I just didn't know of any other options in Columbus other than 97.1

Do you work for the station? No I'm not bragging and the exchange was hardly a war of words....spelling was bad

I listen to the show from time to time....its the only sports radio show in Columbus...They have better formats and have had better formats in that time slot....I was pissed, sent and e mail and he responded...

I would like to see some competition in the market...I think its a valid discussion

I am not a fan of the Common-Dork and the Torgerscum!

They are always negative and if by chance someone does something well, they find something to distract the listener and by far and large it is negative. They love to tell us how bad someone or something is. Perhaps they should review themselves.

But on the other hand, I have to give them props. They have helped me resdiscover my mp3 and CD collection that I now play in their time lot. It is full of classic rock, great jazz and classical cuts.

Thanks again Common-Dork and Torgie-scum!

Ahh that felt good. Click!

ESPN850 from Cleveland gets a good signal in Columbus. The problem is that the 3-6 show is Bruce Hooley and Chris Fedor. As long as they aren't talking Buckeyes, that show is 10x better than Common Man and Torg.

I can take a little negativity from someone that can articulate a reason to be negative. CM and T would have trouble articulating why Michael Jordan is historically a better basketball player than World B. Free. Afterall, they're both working at the Citgo now...

And I don't buy the whole, "the don't even take themselves seriously" bullshit. Torg has been trying to break news on that show for years. He keeps trying to be serious and fails. They have to pretend to be joking around because no one could honestly take their "serious" positions seriously. They're a joke. And I hardly think being the #1 sportstalk radio show in Columbus is a badge of honor. It more or less means you've been able to relate to the masses, who are (dare I say) mindless retards.

bass....if you are interested and can afford the 9.99 per month for XM or Sirius i would get it...its worth getting it for the morning drive where you can listen to 24/7 sports radio with Bill King...Bill King is very fair to all schools in D1...sometimes it feels like he might have more of a liking to the south but ive realized its probably because most of those fucks have nothing better to do then to call into the show or email Bill which is why it feels like they sometimes get more of the discussion...i liked it when it was rivals radio a little bit better but its still a good show...at noon they have jack arute and either eddie george or mike leach, and that show is not bad also....basically ive had XM for 3 years and i NEVER listen to regular radio

I'm pretty sure the AM sister station plays Scott VanPelt in the 3-6 time slot.. Won't swear to it though.

Also pretty sure compared to other FM stations, 97.1 has some of the lowest ratings in town.

Dan Patrick is like the Late Night of sports radio to me, too many celebrities and bits and joshing around, I'm really more of a minimalist as a sports-radio listener.

Scott Van Pelt is pretty good for an ESPN guy, but Doug Gottlieb is on 1460 opposite Common Man & Torg for weekday rush hour--his show is better when Mike Salk regularly fills in.

And at least during football season, the WBNS FM/AM simulcast has some of the best ratings in town, really only behind WTVN among all talk-radio stations. But of course they are #1 because literally the only alternative is a Cleveland AM station.
