It wasn't Herbie's fault. If the players had behaved we wouldn't be having this conversation. I think Herbie did what he should have done.
As far as mentioning the names, what's the big deal since they were already out? I'm sure that every one of you were hanging onto your chairs and wanting to hear the names.

Herbie threw out Brewster's name on a nationally televised game as a cheater. His source, a random internet blog. As an announcer/analyst and not a journalist, he prolly should have sat this one out.

I always wondered how it was within the rules for the OSU athletic department to give gold jewelry to the players. Is there a rule that says, "you can give you players items up to a value of in a given season for rewards"?

Yes. There is a set amount a program is allowed to spend on things like Championship Rings and whatnot.

Same goes for Bowl Swag. Bowls are allowed a certain dollar amount they can spend on the swag for players.

hehe....well, part of running a good program is educating the players enough so they don't do stupid things, but I know what you mean.

I'll bet this experience serves as a lesson to the compliance departments all over the college football landscape. I suspect they (well the ones who care about running a clean program) will be looking really hard at players when they get new tattoos.

not good, not bad, id say.

i figure it costs me $300 a game, plus parking/extras (drink/hot dog, nachoes, etc) to go to a game. 4 tix @$75 or so a pop. toss in a healthy donation to secure my right to a seat. im sticking by my statement. if these kids play, my $2,500 or so bucks (for tickets) and a larger donation to secure the tickets are gone. with the current economy ive got better things to do with it than [censored] it down the drain to watch some maroons disgrace my university. hell id rather [censored] it away in cleveland or cincinnati on the turds or the bungles...

Is that larger donation to the Buckeye Club or the President's Club? If it's the latter, I don't see the positives involved in punishing the history department, scholarship fund or wherever it goes for bad judgement in the athletic department. Just my two cents. If it's to the Buckeye Club, then it would make a hell of a statement to Tress and GS.

Why all the angst over what Herbie and other analysts pontificate about tOSU program..let the facts come out and form your own opinion. This goes for everything not just this issue..before ESPN we didn't need confirmation on our opinions from talking heads. I sure as hell respect many of the Mods and Posters opinions here than Herbies Mays or James'.

Correct.

And the thing that gives things like Gold Pants and Championship Rings value is who they belonged to.

A Championship Ring belonging to TP is significantly more valuable than one belonging to a Scrub who didn't play.

Not that tOSU has any Scrubs, mind you
.

You sir, just saved yourself from a good Yankee a$$ kicking with that last statement!

Sucks. Sucks a lot. This will diminish a win in the Sugar Bowl, as you will hear all about how tOSU lets guys play in a BCS bowl even if they did illegal stuff, and how Tress got their suspension put off until mostly easier early season games.

Although I agree that the suspensions should have started at the bowl game, I don't see it diminishing any bowl win (which is, IMO, not likely anyway). Sure, in the months that follow people will bring it up, but in a year or two, no one will give a [censored] about it.

Assuming, of course, that their names are engraved on the gold pants and rings. Anyone know?

This might be the worst rule the NCAA has. Once you give someone something its theirs. If they want to sell it, then thats their right. Someday i think they will seriously regret having sold their rings / gold pants, but to call that a violation worthy of suspension is pathetic.

Some pretty good venting going on here. I hope it's therapeutic for the BP nation!

To this point, I've been one of TP's biggest supporters, promoters and advocates to anyone who would listen.

This was the end of that.

Most of my opinion on the matter is directed at him, but goes for the other 4 as well. You do the crime, you do the time. No amount of hard work or restitution will be anywhere near enough to earn back my respect, regardless of the personal situations at hand. I can't expect Tressel to feel the same way, but he's in a position where he's almost not allowed to. These were knowing violations of the rules not gray areas where kids weren't sure one way or another. As much as I wish the best for ALL of these guys in the future, they've lost all credibility in the Scarlet & Gray for me. Odds are they will all be back, but next year has lost SO much of its luster for me it's heart-wrenching.
