5 players suspended for 5 games in 2011 regular season (Appeal has been denied)

When it comes to discipline, JT has always treated players like his own kids. He has said that you evaluate the punishment not only on the particular incident but how the person has acted in the past. This was his response to the Doug Worthington DUI and the fact that he did not suspend him for a game (he did limit his playing time).

"It's a big picture thing," Tressel said. "It's a whole body of work and the total time that the young man has been here. Everything is an individual issue."

Other than Mike Adams, none of these kids have been in trouble or been suspended before. The bottom line is let's have some confidence in Tressel that he will do what's best for the team, the university and the individual players. If my kid was playing there I sure hope that the coach I entrusted him to for 4-5 years was willing to stand behind them in the face of adversity and make the right decision, regardless of any outside influence.

Ok.

The amount of pride that I feel about this program and this coach right now about has me busting.

This is HUGE.

Say what you want about all of the players involved but they ALL were getting drafted this April regardless of the round.

This is those players making a statement to their team mates and Buckeye nation that being a Buckeye means something to them.

Coach Tressel has made that abundantly clear. As badly as the administration handled this situation Coach Tressel has turned it into a HUGE positive for the program. He basically told Gene Smith, Jim Delany and the Sugar Bowl chairman to take a flying leap.

TP and the others did something that affected their team mates, fans, alums and former players and Coach Tressel has the cache to say "I don't care what Smith, Delany or anyone else says, you guys are going to make this right one way or the other."

Great day to be a Buckeye.

Tweet from Channel 10 in Cbus

@Buckeyes10TV Tressel confirms players affected by NCAA suspensions returning in 2011. "They wouldn't be here if that wasn't the case."

He also said that players would not be permitted to travel to Sugar Bowl if they intended to leave.

I still have a hard time believing they all come back in '11.

What "ethical" standard do you want to use?

The level of punishment was set prior to this incident. The Green suspension of five games -- and like any punishment it coincided with WHEN it was discovered. Fair or not fair, too much, or too little, it is the law.

This incident was discovered at an "inconvenient" time for the NCAA, the conference, the Bowl folks as well as Ohio State. The precedent established that punishment is to begin immediately.

At some point the "fairness"/"harshness" of the punishment can be argued out, but in the meantime the initial position of the university -- as I understand it -- "They've been caught, they are to serve the punishment called for and it begins now," was the only choice they could make.

It was then that Money -- TV, Bowl Sponsors, NCAA -- decided that having the punishment begin now wasn't in Money's best interest.

As I understand it, the university initially understood the situation and took an ethical stance.

Money then took a conflicting ethical stance, that revenue supersedes precedent and pressured the the university into reversing itself.

Conclusions? One might be that the football tail wags the dog in Columbus. Another might be that The Ohio State University values money above ethical behavior or that it bends to the will of corrupting influences.

One thing is for sure in my mind, the people who are the corrupting influences for the conduct of this situation -- the NCAA, TV and BCS -- are not getting the bad ink that the players and OSU are.

The players put themselves into a vulnerable position and the university decided -- incorrectly in my mind-- to jump in with them.

And how does that fit in with my use of Woody? At the same time other coaches -- Bear Bryant, Jackie Sherrill among them -- were accepting contracts that far outstripped what professors were receiving-- Hayes insisted on begin paid at the level of a full professor. The value of a football coach was no greater than the value of an educator in his mind. It was only when the AD, Weaver I believe, fired Fred Taylor, that the university discovered just how far out of line Taylor and Hayes' salaries were with the salary required to lure a "Big Name Coach."

At a time when most coaches paid little attention to graduation rates, Hayes kept after his athletes to get to class and to get their degree. When no one else on the faculty would come out and speak with the student anti-war radicals, Woody Hayes stepped forward and met with them on the Oval. When the faculty council voted against a Rose Bowl trip following the 61 season and the student body revolted, it was Hayes' captain, Mike Ingram, who spoke up, "This team can live with the decision, so can you." No doubt in my mind where he learned that.

Green was suspended 4 games. Georgia sat him immediately, and the NCAA tacked on an additional 3.

The "horror" of the initial announcement has worn off. I was on the side of, suspend them now. Now that I have cooled off, why would you add additional punishment?? The judge and jury has spoken. If there was a guarentee from the NCAA that this game would count towards the 5, I would sit them. Without that guarentee, they are playing.

In my opinioin, what Troy Smith did was much worse than what these guys did. Taking a hand out is wrong...no grey area. Selling your stuff even though it seems bad on the surface, still has some gray area. He missed 2 games including a bowl game. I would count that as equavilent to a 3 game regular season suspension.

If Boom does return, running back is going to be an interesting position to see with the amount of depth (and any transfers). However, any other running back has 2-5 games (whatever the suspension ends up being) to prove their worth.

I'd be concerned about benching a hot tailback or QB though, if the suspension is more than two games.

Although tOSU's behavior in this situation hasn't been ideal, I believe they've received far more negative publicity than they deserve.
In all honesty, they've probably received more positive publicity as well.

Bottom line is that this story is predominantly about the NCAA and its disciplinary procedures, rather than about Ohio State or even the players involved.

It seems to me that Posey, Adams, and Pryor would be a lock to regain their starting jobs. Herron could be in trouble with all the depth at the position.

Maybe Adams could be in trouble if Marcus Hall is playing well....but there are going to be 2 holes at guard next year. I could see starting at tackle for the first 5 games then slippining inside when Adams returns.

All these guys have left going for them is their word and their willingness to be better men and prove this was a "young" mistake. Alot of folks don't believe they sold this stuff for their families and now folks don't believe their promises to Jim Tressel and their Buckeye teammates. Holy judgmental BatMan!

Again. Jim Tressel is THE MAN. He is one of the most admirable people I know. I'm going to keep post-padding saying this because JT honestly tries to do the right thing.

Whenever JT leaves, the losses will be far greater OUTSIDE the Win/Loss column than inside.
