5 players suspended for 5 games in 2011 regular season (Appeal has been denied)

Spielman said 80-90% of Buckeye Nation would follow Tressel if he decided to bench them. I am among them, even though I am still a bit neutral on the subject.

I think 80-90% of Buckeye Nation would follow Tressel whether he takes Spielman's advice or not, rendering his commentary meaningless if that was his intent. I didn't take it the way you're taking it.

It's okay if some of us disagree with Spielman. He's a big boy and he can handle it. We still love him.

Spiels is a guts and glory guy...that is why folks love him. He wears his heart on his sleeve at all times. There is a very small filter between his brain and his mouth...sometimes that is great and sometimes that is not beneficial to his perception.

I love Spiels...but his hyperbole in that statement was comical.

It's clear that Tress and Smith feel that the punishment of 5 games is too extreme, or they would not be appealing the decision. WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD THEY ADD ADDITIONAL PUNISHMENT WHEN THEY ARE APPEALING THE DECISION ALREADY MADE?

It just doesn't make sense to me.

I heard on the radio today that Tress said they would have playing time in the game... For me that means they do not start but fill in later in the game... maybe a quarter or half... take it for what it is worth.

...or that is semantics for an Arkansas staff trying to figure out what in the hell to prepare for...

I was in the "bench them for the bowl" camp right after the shit hit the fan and the ruling came down. To me it wasn't going to be worth it go though what I thought would've been a bit of a charade to play these guys and then suspend them after. I thought suspending them might help avoid some of the circus that's coming with this situation.

I've changed my mind though, and here's why:

  • In practical terms, there's no sense in suspending them. They're not being required to, and there's no guarantee that the 5-game ban for next season is going to be changed or reduced on appeal. There's no sense in basically adding to an already severe penalty.
  • I don't care about the "ethical" aspects of this. If the Buckeyes win with these players in the Sugar Bowl and people think that's unfair, I won't give a shit.
  • This is not at all like the Steve Bellisari suspension. Nobody ever got killed by a kid selling football memoribilia. People have been killed by drunk drivers. If anything, the fact that these five players are going to serve a penalty 2.5 times more severe than highlights how ridiculously severe this penalty is.
  • Finally, every bowl game except the NCG is just an exhibition. They have no bearing on championships or league standings. Let everybody play and give the fans a good show.

I'm in the who the fuck cares what anyone else thinks, let them play if they got ruled eligible camp. I'm down with whatever JT wants. I really can't understand why it has been such a big deal for some people. I'm not trying to put anyone down but I just don't get the amount of time and energy that people put into something that is already a foregone conclusion.

Let 'em play. I don't see the point in punishing yourself even more when the law already set you free. Ohio State is a great university and cleaner than almost every program. Fuck everyone else's perception.

Is this a case of the SEC via the NCAA getting its early licks on tOSU -too many acronyms there? :)

The NCAA has rendered its decision. There is nothing unethical about complying with it.

I looked up at my diploma and my LM Alumni Card and I didn't see anything on it that said if the sentence is to cut off your right arm, you should cut off the left one as well just to make some people feel better about it.

OK...so to agree with the NCAA decision to allow them to play in the Sugar Bowl means that you don't believe the decision should be appealed at all. Because if OSU accepts the advantageous side of this decision (allowing the guys to play in the SB) then they need to accept the disadvantageous side of this decision (the guys miss Michigan State).

I'm with Cinci on this one. While I agree that the punishment is too much...ridiculously high.....allowing the guys to play in the Sugar Bowl is highly inconsistent with true punishment. It wreaks of favoritism, money over ethics, a rogue OSU program showing its true colors. I'm not saying I agree with these positions, but I can guarantee that is how it's going to look to the casual observer in the end. Forever Ohio State's victory over Arkansas will be followed by the note that "OSU appealed to have the suspension start in 2011 season".......that's how it will be written and perceived.

Now if there was a clear order given by the NCAA to have OSU allow the players to play in the bowl, then Gene Smith or Jim Tressel ought to speak up and set the story straight (even if ordered to not do so). I suspect that there was and that is why Tressel is in a tough position on this one. I trust Jim Tressel to make great decisions 97% of the time. Perhaps this is one of those he will botch...perhaps not. Perhaps only time will tell whether this one was right. We surely don't have all the facts, I'm sure.

But if Tressel suspends them for 1 series or 1 quarter or 1 half in the Sugar Bowl, then that to me is admission that they should have sat the entire game.

Did you miss earlier posts showing that OSU did indeed initially suspend them for the bowl game before the NCAA said, "You don't have to because we're suspending them for the first five games of next season"?

This article suggests otherwise...and that, even worse, Ohio State and the BigTen lobbied the NCAA hard to not suspend the players for the bowl game. This one is starting to smell worse and worse to me.

tOSU football program has gone through these kind of things forever..the program will survive and thrive..the ethics under question are mostly of the athletes not the school. Like it or not as a member of the NCAA we are held to their ethical standards. Just like a doc and the AMA or a lawyer and the BAR. We should comply with the NCAA appeal and move on. AS a fan I don't need the approval of ESPN's analysts to make me feel good about supporting JT and tOSU. Every one can have an opinion but they all have agendas...

What is advantageous about getting to play in the Sugar Bowl? The advantageous part would be to start the 5 games immediately so we aren't playing a conference game without 5 of our best players.

Opinions are like assholes.... everyone has one and most of them stink... At least we won't haveto sit on our hands hoping the NCAA doesn't come take away the bowl win like a certain SEC program we all know.
