College football bowl projections: Updated spring picks for 2024 season
Early predictions are in for every bowl matchup.
ROSE BOWL
Projected matchup: No. 8 Notre Dame vs. No. 1 Ohio State
Two programs that are familiar with one another, Ohio State's win at Notre Dame last season brought out something unique in coach Ryan Day post-game when he made things personal with former Fighting Irish coaching legend Lou Holtz. Ohio State wasn't physical enough to be mentioned in the ranks of the elites, per Holtz, and then the Buckeyes delivered. Much has been made about Notre Dame's stance in the expanded playoff and how 10 wins a season should be enough for the independent to grab one of the available at-large bids.
COTTON BOWL (SEMIFINAL)
Projected matchup: No. 1 Ohio State vs. No. 3 Florida State
The Buckeyes get back to the site of last season's loss to Missouri with a chance to reach the national championship finale with a win. Ohio State matching up with projected ACC champion FSU would be a ratings bonanza and would offer up another opportunity for Day to right his wrongs against elite competition. The winner of this one goes to the national championship game in late January with a chance to start the playoff expansion era with a bang.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Projected matchup: No. 1 Ohio State vs. No. 2 Georgia
These two teams met two years ago in Atlanta during a terrific playoff semifinal game that catapulted former Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud toward the top of the 2023 NFL Draft. He gashed Georgia's secondary that evening, but it was the Bulldogs and former standout Stetson Bennett, who prevailed and moved on to the title game. This time around, the winner gets the hardware. These are arguably college football's two best teams as we speak in April and will be the preferred picks from most media to meet in the finale.

It's national title or bust: This was felt before spring practice began, but the spring has only reinforced the belief in Columbus. Everything Ohio State has done this offseason has given the impression that this program is tired of playing second-fiddle to its hated rival and is ready to win its first national title in 10 years. While the quarterback battle continues to rage on, the expectation remains that Kansas State transfer Will Howard will be the favorite for the gig, but honestly, it might not matter much. Ohio State continues to have an impressive collection of skill talent to take the load off the QB, and the defense is stacked from front to back. Everybody has looked the part this spring.

I have misplaced my pants.
What am I missing, here? In a traditional playoff, where the brackets are fixed once they're made, 1 plays 16, and the winner plays the winner of 8 vs. 9. Assuming 1 wins those to games, they'd play the winner of 4 vs 13 and 5 vs 12. The winner of that is in the title game. Obviously, there is no 13 or 16 (or 14 or 15 on the other side of the bracket) so those games are just byes. In a traditional playoff, there's no way for 3 to play 1 outside of the title game.
I know that the NFL recreates the bracket after each round. 1 gets a bye, 2 plays 7, 3 plays 6, and 4 plays 5. Then 1 plays the lowest-seeded team (highest number), and so on. So if 7 beats 2, 1 will play 7, not the winner of 4 vs 5.
Is that how the college playoff is going to be?
I guess that still doesn't make sense. In the semifinal, there should still be 4 teams. And with 1 automatically playing the lowest-seeded team, how can they play #3?

Under the 12-team playoff format that begins this fall, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye, while teams seeded five through 12 will play each other in the first round on the home field of the higher-ranked team. (The team ranked #5 will host #12; team #6 will meet team #11; team #7 will play team #10; and team #8 will meet #9.) The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played in the New Year's Six bowl games, the national championship game will continue to be at a neutral site. No conference will qualify automatically and there will be no limit on the number of participants from a conference.

Players who could surprise for the Buckeyes in 2024
These are the Buckeyes who aren't getting much publicity but could still make an impact.
Ohio State's 2024 roster is loaded with talent. The Buckeyes have recruited among the best teams in the country and did a remarkable job early this offseason in retaining many of their upperclassmen who could have moved on early to the NFL Draft. The Scarlet and Gray also added smartly with six additions from the transfer portal.The roster is filled with names even the most casual Ohio State fans have become familiar with in recent years. This includes running back TreVeyon Henderson, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, defensive ends J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer and cornerback Denzel Burke. Freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith, the top-ranked player in the 2024 recruiting class, saw his hype train leave the station this spring with his performances in practice. Quarterback Will Howard, running back Quinshon Judkins, offensive lineman Seth McLaughlin and safety Caleb Downs all quickly established themselves within the Buckeye program after transferring and are expected to have a significant impact this fall.
But every season, there are players who surprise, those who didn't get talked about enough during the offseason but emerge as important contributors to the season. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Xavier Johnson, Dallan Hayden, Mitch Rossi, Tyleik Williams and Steele Chambers are recent examples of players who outperformed their preseason expectations at some point. Not all were major contributors, but they found a way to be a factor.
Attempting to pick surprise players is not a science, but Bucknuts looks at five potential Scarlet and Gray candidates who could join this list in 2024.

I can't freaking wait for November 30
Same here. And I am glad the game is already set for noon, there is no other time it should be played. I say that as someone in MST time zone that has a 10am kickoff, but tradition is tradition.

College football win total projections: Updated 2024 marks in SEC, Big Ten
How oddsmakers expect the SEC and Big Ten title races to shake out.
OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (10.5)
No elite program made more power moves in terms of talent accumulation this spring than the Buckeyes. Ohio State went from College Football Playoff threat to one of the national title favorites given the roster and coaching staff additions accomplished by Ryan Day. On top of securing one of the nation's top transfer classes with Alabama All-American safety Caleb Down, Ole Miss standout ball carrier Quinshon Judkins and multi-year Kansas State starting quarterback Will Howard, the Buckeyes also quickly replaced newly-hired offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien with UCLA head coach Chip Kelly.
