2024 Fall Camp and Other Tidbits

Very excited to see the development of Damarion Witten this fall.
With 5 schollies open, I wonder if Dorian Williams gets one?
As concerned as I am with QB, I couldn't trust Chip Kelly more with his ability to take any of them and make them look great.
I'd assume Seth being on the 2nd line was just for the sake of mixing up the rotation...

Press Coverage: Will Howard Has Best Day We've Seen From Him, Other Quarterbacks Also Impress on Day Two of Fall Camp

That's not to discount what those other QBs achieved, though, because both Devin Brown and Julian Sayin had great flashes throwing the ball. Other than the quarterbacks, the tight ends and Calvin Simpson-Hunt were among the other top standouts from practice.

Ohio State Practice Observations: Will Howard, Calvin Simpson-Hunt Among Day Two Standouts

Will Howard had the kind of practice we had been waiting to see from the Kansas State transfer quarterback on Ohio State’s second day of preseason camp.

After an underwhelming first day of camp on Thursday, Howard was much more consistent during Friday’s second practice of August. He showed the best deep accuracy we’ve seen from the fifth-year senior passer dating back to this spring, delivering multiple on-target long balls including a beautiful wheel-route completion to TreVeyon Henderson on the right sideline over Garrett Stover.

Howard also impressed with his pocket presence and reads as there were multiple examples of Howard working through multiple progressions to find open receivers for completions during team and 7-on-7 drills.

It still wasn’t a perfect day for Howard. He had to run a lap after dropping a snap from Seth McLaughlin during team drills, and he got away with a near-interception that Jaylen McClain dropped on an underthrown deep ball to Reis Stocksdale. Overall, though, there was much more positive than negative to take away from Friday’s practice for Howard.

He wasn’t the only quarterback who impressed on Friday.

Ohio State Practice Observations: Will Howard Has Another Good Day, Interior Offensive Line Competition Comes Into Focus and Jordan Hancock Shines

Will Howard kept momentum on his side in Ohio State’s third practice of preseason camp.

After following up an underwhelming first day of preseason camp with an impressive second day, Howard looked sharp again during Ohio State’s third practice of camp at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Saturday, showing why he’s the frontrunner to be the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback for the 2024 season despite a shaky spring.

While he didn’t have any wow throws on Saturday, the Kansas State transfer was on the mark far more often than not during team drills and 7-on-7. Taking the majority of reps behind the first-team offensive line during 11-on-11 work, Howard also showcased his running ability with an explosive sprint up the left sideline that might have been an 80-yard touchdown – against the first-team defense – if the play hadn’t been whistled dead to protect the quarterback.

As was the case on Friday, Julian Sayin and Devin Brown also had their moments on Saturday.

Sayin was the most effective quarterback during a red-zone passing drill early in practice and had what might have been the most impressive throw of the day during 11-on-11 when he lofted a perfect deep ball over the outside shoulder of Jeremiah Smith, drawing defensive pass interference on Denzel Burke as Smith just narrowly missed hauling in a one-handed catch anyway.

The true freshman led multiple drives behind the first-team offensive line during team drills – the first we’ve seen in preseason camp that featured a full first-team offense on the field simultaneously – suggesting that Sayin is in the mix to be Ohio State’s No. 2 quarterback if not Howard’s top competition for the starting job.

Brown had what our contingent of Eleven Warriors reporters agreed was his worst day of preseason camp so far on Saturday, and he ran primarily with the second-team offense in team drills. That said, he delivered a late-practice highlight with his arm for the second day in a row when he connected with Emeka Egbuka on a cannon shot over the top of the defense to beat Jermaine Mathews Jr. deep.

Three days into August practice, Howard’s standing as the leader in Ohio State’s quarterback competition feels stronger than it did when camp opened on Thursday, while Sayin is pushing Brown for position behind Howard. While the competition between all three of them continues on, it seems clear that they will be the Buckeyes' top three quarterbacks in one order or another, as Lincoln Kienholz worked primarily with the third-team offense on Saturday, while Air Noland saw no action during the 11-on-11 periods.

Additional notes

  • Saturday’s practice was the first of camp that included live field goal kicking attempts. Returning starter Jayden Fielding shanked one attempt wide left but otherwise looked to be the most consistent of Ohio State’s kickers on the day.
  • Jayden Ballard delivered the highlight of the red-zone passing portion of practice when he made a catch over a defensive back and got his feet down in the back of the end zone on a throw over the middle from Sayin.
  • Walk-on standouts on the day included tight end Jace Middleton, who had a long catch-and-run off a short pass, and wide receiver Reis Stocksdale, who got open frequently against the third-team defense and made multiple downfield catches for notable gains.
  • NFL scouts from the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans Saints and Washington Commanders attended Saturday’s practice.
Just sayin': You keep hearing "good stuff" about Sayin. Makes you wonder if Sayin will eventually pass Brown on the depth chart and move up to QB2.

Ohio State Practice Observations: Will Howard Takes Nearly All First-Team Reps in 11-on-11, Offensive Line Shuffling Continues on Day Four of Camp

148168_h.jpg

Ohio State opened preseason camp to fans for the fourth and final time on Sunday as the Buckeyes concluded their first weekend of practice, giving us our fourth chance in a row to get a look at Ohio State’s ongoing quarterback and offensive line competition and see who’s standing out as the Buckeyes’ preparation for the 2024 season continues to ramp up.

Sunday wasn’t the best day for any of Ohio State’s quarterbacks, but Will Howard was the most consistent performer among the passers for a third straight day. In another sign that he’s beginning to separate from the other quarterbacks in the competition, Howard took every rep with the first-team offense during full-team 11-on-11 drills except for one on which Julian Sayin threw a pick-six to Jermaine Mathews Jr., prompting the true freshman to be demoted to the third-team offense for the rest of practice.

Howard continued to stand out among the quarterbacks with his ability to work through progressions and make the correct reads against Ohio State’s defense, which outperformed the offense overall on Sunday. He didn’t have a great day throwing the deep ball, missing a couple of long passes during 7-on-7 work, but was the most efficient QB in the short-to-intermediate passing game.

Sayin had his worst day of preseason camp so far on Sunday, nearly throwing another interception during 7-on-7 that was dropped by Denzel Burke. He did cap off the practice with a deep-ball touchdown throw, though it was an easy pitch and catch after Brandon Inniss got wide open against the third-team defense.

Devin Brown worked exclusively with the second-team offense in team drills for the second day in a row. Like on Saturday, Brown had an up-and-down day in which he was inconsistent with his accuracy to all levels of the field.

Lincoln Kienholz saw action with both the second- and third-team offense during team drills and had what might have been the best throw of the day when he threaded a deep ball into a tight window between a defender and the sideline to Inniss, who stood out the most among Ohio State’s receivers on Sunday as he continued his strong start to camp.

Air Noland did not take any reps during team drills for the second day in a row.

Other notes

  • JT Tuimoloau stayed down on the ground for a few minutes after getting shaken up during a play in team drills, but eventually jogged off the field under his own power and did not have his helmet taken away from him as he remained on the sideline. He did not return to the field for any live reps for the remainder of practice, but that appeared to be precautionary.
  • Will Kacmarek returned to practice after briefly receiving medical attention for what appeared to be an ankle tweak.
  • Although he continued to battle inconsistency with some noticeable mishits, Nick McLarty downed two punts at the 1-yard line during a pooch punt drill. Anthony Venneri and Joe McGuire each downed a punt at the 2-yard line during that drill.
  • As he did in the spring, walk-on safety Brenton “Inky” Jones impressed with good coverage on several plays, shielding off Ballard from one deep ball and nearly coming down with a one-handed interception on an underthrown long pass by Brown.
  • The NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears all had scouts in attendance.
