Let’s dive into our first post-spring Ohio State projected two-deep depth chart. There are still a few battles that can change in the summer and with some additions in the transfer portal. For now, though, this is how I see the depth chart shaking out on Week 1 against Akron.

Just sayin': Obviously nothing is etched in stone, the 2 sites aren't in 100% agreement, and transfers/injuries can still change it before Fall Camp starts.

The transfer portal makes it so hard to predict the depth chart now, but that all appears to line up roughly with how I see it shaking out. There will be an "OR" next to a lot of the names on the 2 deep methinks, especially at WR. Makes me giddy reading the potential depth charts though, damn that's a loaded roster to work with.

I thought the transfer window closed until the season starts? I will defer to your knowledge.

Or lack of knowledge, I really can't keep up with the new rules other than to see players leave after a spring game. Just makes it hard to track what a roster might look like, so I'm not even going to try to guess on this subject, and just smile and wave.

College football roundtable: The biggest concern for every top 25 team exiting spring practice

Insiders from the nation's best teams revealed each top 25 team's biggest Achilles' heel.

1. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

Biggest Concern Exiting Spring:
Quarterback

"Still no starting quarterback. While the Buckeyes still have questions to answer on the right side of the offensive line, progress has appeared to be made in that department. The quarterback situation remains as it was at the start of spring: Ohio State has talent and it likely comes down to Will Howard or Devin Brown but no one did enough to earn the spot or even separate from the pack. Last season's team took a step back without elite quarterback play, and the Buckeyes are still searching to find that this offseason."

The Ohio State football team is looking to add a transfer at a surprising position

We know offensive linemen are needed, but the lack of depth at a defensive position is a concern.

As late as April 29th, the Buckeyes had very little wiggle room to add a transfer portal player because they were right up against the limit of 85 scholarships. Thanks to a few players entering the portal near the very end of the spring window, the Buckeyes now have some space to work with. But you might be surprised to know which position they are targeting right now.

It is well known the Buckeyes need help along the offensive line, but…safety? With the departure of Ja’Had Carter, they are down to just six scholarship safeties. That may sound like plenty, but keep in mind defensive coordinator Jim Knowles uses as many as three at any given time.

If you’re surprised they’re looking to bring in a safety (or two), you’ll be even more surprised to know what school one of the top candidates has been playing for over the last few seasons: Cameron Broussard has played for…Sacramento State.

Kurelic says another name to watch for is Jaden Mangham from Michigan State. But for now, the focus is on Broussard because of his impending visit.

Ohio State currently has 80 players on scholarship for the 2024 season, and it now knows that none of those players will transfer elsewhere this year.

The Buckeyes lost six players during the post-spring transfer portal entry window – running back Dallan Hayden, wide receiver Kyion Grayes, guard Enokk Vimahi, linebacker Nigel Glover and safeties Ja’Had Carter and Cedrick Hawkins – but kept the core intact of what they expect to be a championship-caliber roster.

Now five scholarships under the 85-man limit, Ohio State could still add a few players to its 2024 roster to bolster its depth. While the deadline to enter the portal has now passed, players already in the portal can still transfer to new schools. The Buckeyes have reportedly been in contact with Michigan State defensive tackle Derrick Harmon (per On3) as well as a trio of safeties: Michigan State’s Jaden Mangham and Sacramento State’s Cameron Broussard, per 247Sports, as well as Texas A&M transfer Jacoby Mathews. Offensive line has been seen as the top-priority position for a post-spring transfer addition, though there doesn’t appear to be a wealth of Ohio State-caliber linemen in the portal.

With that in mind, we take a look at how Ohio State’s roster stacks up following the year’s final portal entry deadline to assess the Buckeyes’ depth at each position and where they could potentially look to fill out the roster with another transfer addition.

They'll add a safety and one other piece, then put Caffey, Inky Jones and Fielding on scholarship.
This all checks out, it is clear Caffey and Inky have made quite the impression on the players and staff. Plus they both looked good in the spring game. Fielding is a likely starter, so it would make sense to convert him to scholarship (I think anyways, I have paid zero attention to any kicker battles if there is one lol).
