2024 Fall Camp and Other Tidbits

In what way?

Avery was too good to redshirt his freshman year and forced his way onto the field with some packages, which you could see TSC doing especially given his size difference over Sayin. It lets you acclimate a youngster and see what you have going into the next season. They loved what they saw and it appeared to make a mutual decision occur....if you weren't head over heels going into Sayin's junior year (TSC's sophomore), it's possible you could have a similar situation.

Idk about that one. Sayin is really freaking good! Deadly accurate, quick release, and quick enough to get yards with his legs. But he's the closest I've seen to CJ Stroud. I could be wrong, but I don't see TSC supplanting Sayin, IF Sayin wins the starting spot. I don't worry about the size all that much, because CFB has seen a ton of small QBs have success(Jeremiah Masoli, Johnny Football, Bryce Young, Tua, etc). TSC knows what the QB room looks like, and knows that he has an uphill battle to start

It probably is a stretch, and everything said about Sayin so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

And, from what we’ve heard, TSC is all about the development. It takes some maturity to say, I’ll take a year or two, get really good and then blaze it up rather than walking in as QB1 and trying to learn on the job. As you say, he knows what the room looks like and it seems that’s why he’s staying in Ohio.

Three big winners of Ohio State football fall camp

The Ohio State football program is about done with figuring out its starters. These three players are the big winners coming out of Fall camp.

The Ohio State football team will be playing football in just over a week. They have been waiting for this moment ever since they lost to Michigan in the final game of the regular season in 2023. The Cotton Bowl was further embarrassment that made them eager for this year to come around.

This roster is absolutely loaded from top to bottom. On both sides of the ball, the Buckeyes are ready to erase the bad memories from last season and replace them with all-time great memories. This team has its sight set on a national championship and nothing less is good enough.

Even though the team is loaded, there are still some players who have been fighting for starting spots. There were battles going on for starter's reps and some of the battles aren't quite finished yet. Even so, some players have emerged as undisputed winners of Fall camp.

There are three guys who have come out of camp in much better standing than they were entering the Fall. Even if some of these guys don't win a starting spot, they are in a position where they are actually battling for playing time, which is a win in itself.

The first player on this list is someone who is making the battle for right guard a lot closer than everyone thought it was going to be.

1. Tegra Tshabola

2. Will Howard

3. Cody Simon

Ryan Day Says Ohio State Recruits Can Learn From Archie Griffin's Off-Field Legacy, Punter Nick McLarty Can “Boom Them”

  • On the balance of getting work in practice and dealing with the heat wave in Columbus: "This week it's hot. ... The good news is we're coming off of preseason camp where we've got a lot of reps going into the first week, we're not stressed in terms of the number of reps. ... You can get dehydrated during the week going into the game."
  • On the excitement entering Week 1: "You have their attention in the first week because they haven't played a game in quite some time. ... Our guys will be ready to play on Saturday."
  • On the practice schedule this week: "We'll take Sunday to game plan and get everything in order. ... We've decided to use (Monday) as more of a Sunday format, but we're out there in pads."
  • Former Ohio State head coach and 97.1 the Fan broadcaster John Cooper said he doesn't think he's ever seen a better-looking college football team. "A lot of people have come together to get where we are right now," Day responded.
  • On the transfer portal: "When there's holes you've gotta fill them. We're not gonna bring in a dozen or more players ... you've just gotta sustain over a period of time ... I think we've done that. I think we've done that with not only talented guys but guys who understand what it means to be Ohio State Buckeyes."
  • On punter Nick McLarty, who was named Ohio State's starter for the Akron game: "Big leg. ... He's had to transition from Australian rules football to punting. ... He can boom them. He's done a nice job so far."
  • On new recruiting director Morgan Phillips: "Morgan is very, very talented. Did a great job at the previous stops. ... She came very highly recommended and we're very excited about her."
  • The first OSU game of the season brings the first opportunity for recruits to check out gameday in the Shoe, particularly with it being a 3:30 p.m. game. "Some folks will be able to fly in the morning of. ... I know we're gonna have a great crowd, looks like great weather."
  • The new Archie Griffin statue being unveiled in the Ohio Stadium rotunda speaks further to the tradition of Ohio State's program, Day said. "We'll kiss the cleats," he joked.
  • Even more than his on-field impact, Day feels Griffin exemplifies the character football players should possess off of it. "That's one of the things we talk a lot about in recruiting is the traditions, and Archie's such an unbelievable icon in Ohio State football ... It's amazing to me being here now going on eight years, the stories you hear about the impact he's made on people off the field."
