2024 College Football Playoffs Discussion (12 Team Format)

I think the thing about the "SEC is best" narrative that bugs me out is that it's generally true. While I think the gap is typically overstated, the SEC has been the deepest and best from top to bottom in most years that I've been watching (01-present). This doesn't look anything like the usual SEC, and it's about fucking time people start being honest with themselves about it.

They were so-so for decades before they emerged post USC in the mid 00's. Perhaps this will turn out to be a delayed regression to their historical norm. Now, I don't think that is what will happen (too much money and too much obsession on the part of the schools with the foosball), but it wouldn't be entirely out of the question.

The top of the SEC has been good. The middle has been mostly ok. The bottom has been bad. That equals average. That's also the case for nearly every conference (the big ones, at least).

The top of the SEC has been generally (at times clearly) better than every other conferences for the majority of my fandom. I don't like to admit it, but the SEC has been objectively better than the Big Ten, Pac-10/12, Big 12 and the ACC for the better part of the last 20 years or so.

Again, I think the gap is overstated by the "SEC!" folks, but it has been the best conference over that time period. Certainly isn't the case this year though.
