Didn't look pretty in spring, hopefully we don't need any meaningful FGs this year.
We shouldnt early on for sure and Day is going to have to think about this when he decides to pass up a fg to go for it instead. We need to start challenging these dudes so that they will be there when they are most needed later. We don't have to pad the shit out of the stats like Day like's to do when we have guys that need to get the reps on specials also.

My hope is that we have a quarterback who can get the ball on time and in the proper place for our receivers. If the quarterback can do his job this offense might be better than last year.

If the RBs can stay healthy the running game should be able to be used to open up the passing game quite a bit. That would make life way easier on the QBs. I think this is what we will see, a more run focused approach, especially earlier in the year. Kill the opposing team through the air when they start sneaking up to try to stop the run.

People are going to mostly hate it, but I think Devin Brown and Kyle McCord are going to split a lot of games this year. I think there's going to be situational moments where one guy is better suited that the other and the coaching staff is going to play to teams best chance of moving the ball in those moments.

Devin is crafty with the ball and a very good athlete. He throws it well on the run but can also get himself in a little trouble at times. Brown's arm strength is right there with McCord, but McCord's ball placement is a bit better on a consistent basis. The issue for Kyle is if he has an off practice, there's very little to work with. He's not very athletic, won't make plays with feet, and doesn't add any threat in run game like Brown does.

Ultimately, they're both still young and developing. From what I've heard Brown has had the better camp but on any given day one guy can show out and the next day give back the ground they gained.

It's weird, but one thing that comes to my mind is Michigan against TCU last year. Michigan was getting blasted until they let McCarthy use his legs in run game and it opened EVERYTHING up. I think all things being equal, you kinda have to go with the more mobile kid. JMO. I'll be rooting for both of them though....have heard they're both amazing kids and there are no concerns with either leaving mid-season or anything out of spite. The other interesting tidbit I got, was that giving the reigns to Devin Brown now, would be an amazing learning opportunity for Lincoln Kienholz who has a very similar style to Brown.

Yeah I don’t get this by Day… so it’s really close at a minimum and I don’t think anyone is surprised by that.

However only one can start and the “lean on experience” when it’s tied IMO is a mistake. Kyle should’ve seized this job six months ago and the fact it’s dead even (some reporting Devin is ahead and has been for some time) after Kyles had hundreds of more reps and actual game experience tells me Devin is the option.

Devin is more mobile, he’s a more vocal leader and he’s apparently not far off of a thrower either. You add that to having an extra year and I’m not sure what we’re waiting for.

I get it that Day and staff are nervous about Kyle checking out (maybe even walking away) but as it’s pointed out there’s really no where for him to go if Devin is the guy.

My guess is the statistics say slightly Kyle but the eye check says Devin because that’s the only thing that makes sense. At any rate the coaches need to pick one for the first game and then we can play both vs YSU.
It might just be that day thinks devin is his guy, but he’s not sure if devin can take the heat of the game. If you name Devin and then he cracks under the pressure, then it looks bad and it can mess with Devin’s confidence in the event that we do need him.

If you say it’s even and have them split the first couple of games then it allows the staff to save face and not hurt anyone’s confidence.

This feels like the smart move. And if we can’t win the first 3 games while juggling QBs then there are bigger problems than one position.

Buckle up, the Indiana game will probably look rough on offense. That’s ok if it gets us in better position in November.

The last 2 years have showed me that you have to go with a mobile qb. The bigten is up north and the nasty weather has really slowed down the 5 star recievers. Having a mobile qb is a necessity in the bigten IMO.

Remember 2 years ago when your gut sunk as the heavy snow started to fall just before THE GAME, or last year with the 30+ mph wind gust at I believe NWern? Justin Fields easily wins those games.

True and good point.

Yeah expecting a disjointed first two games on offense. Just worry that we missed out on 3-4 weeks of a player building chemistry with the offense. We can’t afford to roll into South Bend playing poor offensively.

“Yeah, from top to bottom,” Alford said earlier this month when asked if this year’s running back unit is the deepest he’s ever had. “It's exciting. I mean, it's great to have depth. Everybody wants depth. Everybody talks about having depth. And how that gets dispersed, we'll figure that out as we go. But it's good to have depth, and it's good to have guys. It's good to have good players and proven players.”
