By the Numbers: 9 things you need to know through the first quarter of college football's 2023 season

OHIO STATE’S IMPROVED PASS RUSH

J.T. Tuimoloau

Ohio State’s defense is much improved from last season, and nowhere is that more apparent than on the edge. J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer have both taken a step forward in that department, even if it hasn’t yet shown up on the stat sheet in the form of sacks. Tuimoloau has a pass rush win percentage of 23.7 through three games, and Sawyer is right behind him at 22.6. Compare that to last year where those numbers were 9.3 and 12.8, respectively.

Both former five-star recruits in the class of 2021, Tuimoloau was the top-ranked defensive lineman and No. 2 overall prospect in the country, while Sawyer was the nation’s No. 6 overall prospect and No. 4 defensive lineman.

Yeah it seems they are beating blocks but just not getting home a ton. If they can keep beating blocks though, it will start to show up in the stat sheet soon.

He needs to find the happy median like the Hulk did and be a little of both which I think he’s done a lot.

We’ve seen a lot of 5-6 man blitzes
I like the balance that he has shown in the 1st 3 games. I just want to see him continue it in the big games. Because for all of the blame on Day since he's the HC. The defense was put in the worst positions and cost the last 2 games of the season, IMO. Specifically the DBs being put in risky 1 on 1 situations.

Not sure what can be done at this point, but coaches need to find a way to pressure the QB better than we saw against ND. Yes, they have a top notch O-line but I would have liked to have seen some adjustments in the second half.
I mean I get it but I don’t anyone is giving ND enough credit up front or the fact that Hartman had 50 career starts.

They’re really outstanding and Sawyer even said that’s the best OL they’ve ever played.

I think we all have to adjust what is pressure. We are effecting the QB but just aren’t getting sacks. That’s mainly because coach Knowles has adjusted his philosophy to not be so wreckless.

How about our corners though? They’re truly lock down right now. Besides their TE vs our S or LBs we really gave them nothing.

How about rotating in fresh guys from a bench full of studs?
Mitchell Melton and Kenyatta Jackson should be in for every single obvious passing situation. I don’t know or care who they put on the bench for it, but they’re clearly the two best pass rushers on the team.
It’s funny how we were all like “can we stop rotating” and now it’s like “well I mean give them some sort of breather”.

I didn’t realize the ends played all game and yeah that’s really confusing. I think in the second half because ND went run heavy it really frightened our coaches to put the others in. Still though we need to give these guys a little break here and there.

It seems we always tend to over correct things.

Oh no, I’m not meaning the ND game at all. I knew Joe Alt and Blake Fisher were going to be the real deal. They are undoubtedly the best OT duo OSU will see all season. PSU has an outstanding tackle, but the other side isn’t as good as Fisher.

To me, as the game wore on the DE’s were a little better getting pressure. Still not enough, but I wasn’t really upset at anything in the ND game. I know how hard it is to win there at night. Their 2017 team was nowhere near as good as this 2023 team and UGA got out of there with a 1-point win.

You did the Lords work with this breakdown! It really shows how strong the defense played on Saturday night

Total: 39 rushes for 176

allowing 4.5 YPA isn't exactly elite run defense

Of the many things that will haunt Freeman and ND fans about that game, the 13 carriers in the first half has got to sting. They doubled down on the run in the second half and put up 123 yards in a half.
