allowing 4.5 YPA isn't exactly elite run defense

Of the many things that will haunt Freeman and ND fans about that game, the 13 carriers in the first half has got to sting. They doubled down on the run in the second half and put up 123 yards in a half.
I was relieved that Freeman only gave Estime 14 carries (for 70 yards).

and had the QB run it twice on 4th down instead of the 230lb running back that was ripping off 5 ypa

I won't even get started on the debt we owe him for not smashing that dude straight ahead 3 times on their final possession.

Here’s another way of looking at what happened against ND, using the drive chart.

FIRST HALF

tOSU: from their 25, 8 plays for 33 yards, minus 5 for a false start, punted from the ND 47

ND: from their 11, 14 plays for 71 yards, stopped on 4th and 1, Simon tackled Hartman on sideline and replay reversed the spot

tOSU: from their 18, 3 and out, 3 runs for 8 yards, punted from their own 26

ND: from their own 32, 7 plays for 39 yards, missed a 47-yard FG after 2 straight incomplete passes.

tOSU: from their own 29, 13 plays for 70 yards, stopped at the 1 on a Miyan run for no gain and an incomplete pass

ND: from their own 1, 5 plays for 32 yards, 1 first down, punted from their own 33 after an incomplete pass

tOSU: from their own 21, 12 plays for 66 yards, including PI on Harrison’s catch, 31-yard FG with 26 seconds left in half after Egbuka couldn’t complete a catch in the end zone

ND: from their own 25, took a knee for -1 yard to end the half

SECOND HALF

ND: from their own 25, 8 plays for 36 yards, after 2 straight 1-yard Estime runs, Hartman stuffed on 4th and 1 at tOSU 39

tOSU: from their own 39, 1 play for 61 yards, Henderson‘s speed and Harrison’s block result in a TD, 10-0

ND: from their own 25, 13 plays for 75 yards, all runs except 1 15-yard pass, scored on first and goal from the 1

tOSU: from their own 35, 7 plays for 24 yards, including 15-yard personal foul on Fryar that wiped out a 1st down at ND 28

ND: from their own 4, 11 plays for 96 yards, including a 28-yard pass wide open over the middle, and a clutch throw by Hartman on third and ten inside 3 defenders. Scored on a 2-yard pass with trips left and a man motioning behind them that the Buckeyes didn’t handle

tOSU: from their own 25, 7 plays for 64 yards, including a deep PI against Henderson after a false start. Henderson was short on 3rd and 1, and Egbuka was stopped on a jet sweep.

ND: from their own 11, 5 plays for 16 yards, including JT’s TFL for a -5 on first down, and JT knocking down a screen pass that would have almost certainly sealed the game if it had been complete. Punt to the tOSU 35 with 1:26 left

tOSU: from their own 35, 15 plays for 65 yards in 1:25; including a 23-yard pass to Egbuka on 3rd and 10, a conversion on 4th and 7 to Fleming, a 19-yard completion to Harrison at the 13, intentional grounding creating a 3rd and 19 at the 22 with 15 seconds left (final timeout prevented a 19-second runoff), a 21-yard pass to Egbuka creating a first down at the 1 with 9 seconds left, a quick spike, a timeout by ND after which they only had 10 defenders for tOSU’s incompletion and the TD by Chip with ‘no time’ left. 17-14 after XP was kicked when 1 second was put back on clock.

ND: from their own 35, after squib kick went out of bounds, a multi-lateral play resulted in an 8 yard loss.

So ND only had 7 actual possessions that weren’t the last play of either half, and they got 351 yards on 65 plays. Taking away the -8 on the last play, and the -1 on the kneel down, and giving their offense credit for 10 yards on a holding by Igbinosun, they gained a net of 370 yards on 7 possessions. That’s almost 53 yards per possession, which is a rather alarming number.

On ND’s 7 drives, they had:

2 punts after only moving a short distance, including their final ‘real‘ possession
1 missed FG from 47 yards
2 stops of Hartman on 4th and 1, one of those via a replay reversal that actually went tOSU’s way
2 long TD drives, mostly on the ground, in the second half

On tOSU’s 8 drives, they had:

1 TD on an explosive run
1 TD on a clutch 85-second, 65-yard drive
1 31-yard FG
2 stops on downs, 3rd and 4th from the 1, and 3rd and 4th and 1 from the 11
1 three-and-out
1 punt from near midfield to the ND 11
1 punt from near midfield to the ND 4, after a penalty wiped out a first down to the ND 28

The fact that ND had 1 less possession with a chance to score was significant. Buckeye scores in the final 30 seconds of each half caused that. Both teams were stopped twice on 4th and 1, with tOSU being closer to a TD on both of those failed 4th downs.

ND fans will bemoan the missed FG, their two 4th downs being stuffed when Hartman was running, their guy not picking off a pass intended for Stover in the last minute, and only having 10 guys on the field for the final 7 seconds after their own timeout.

Buckeye fans will bemoan the 4 failed plays on third and fourth and 1, and the personal foul that could be called finishing a block that killed a drive. The play calls and execution on short yardage obviously have to improve significantly for the teams goals to be achieved.

Alarming indeed.

Even more so if you think the defense is going to be a strength this year against quality opponents. Wisky and tsun coaches have be be giddy watching ND run the ball on us.

I'm not even sure how much of that I put on the actual defenders, tbh.

Johnson was barely rotating any of the DL, so these guys were out there for 3:30, we score in 11 seconds, then we give up a 7+ minute drive for a TD. Offense comes back out and is moving until Fryar's penalty screws us and the defense has to come back on the field after a 3 minute drive and gives up 96 yards over 6:28.

The runs that were 2-3 yards were turning into 6-8 yards because the DL was gassed.

If Fryar doesn't commit that penalty, we've got a first down inside the 30. We're probably burning 2-3 more minutes of game clock and possibly score the way we were moving.

It's easy to look at the numbers and say the defense isn't that great but in the context of the game, there were several factors that left them in a really bad spot.

Also Notre Dame just kind of has a really good offense, I don't give a fuck how the pie was made, holding them to 14 was a good performance. Could improvements be made? No doubt.

The days of holding top ten teams to single digits on any consistent basis are over. The same performance against a bad team would be alarming.

This is more or less how I feel. We've played a Top 10 opponent on the road, a road conference game, one of the most high powered offenses in the country and YSU and we've given up a total of 34 points. I'll take that any day.

They definitely can't allow teams to control the flow of the game. Need to find a way to get negative plays without blitzing. ND is a really good and balanced offense, though, so I'm not too worried. They're as good, if not better, than any B1G team OSU will face.

It might be boring and it does hurt TOP, but the defense's ability to slow and stall offenses later in drives is impressive and makes the opponent earn it. It's much closer to a Jim Heacock defense than Don Brown, and if you would've told us that at the end of last year, we'd be pretty happy to hear it. The only thing causing hesitation is the lack of consistent pressure from Sawyer and JT, although I think JT would have some games if they could force teams to focus on someone else for a while.

Rewatching the game vs ND and a few things.

I was wrong about Ransom. Woah has he played well this year and also brought the thunder vs the run too. Same for Proctor as well.

We are very physical and big at safety which I love. Everyone is a big time hitter and all of them have been great is pass coverage.

Now for the bad- wow what a terrible game for Steele. Like a 2021 TTUN type of performance. He was picked on in coverage and he was absolutely targeted in the run game. I thought Tommy played fairly well but was crippled attempting to help Steele.

Right now the “fish” as they call it is Steele. I think we really need to keep our options open there because this wasn’t some sort of fluke. There should be concern there.

Edited: in passing situations on 3rd down they need to get Sonny in at LB. TE killed us this game and that wouldn’t have happened with Sonny on him.

Ok didn't know if it was me but I noticed Steele constantly getting caught in the wrong lane on running plays. It was bad

It wasn’t just running plays. It was a ton of passing plays too.

Steele will rebound fine against Maryland who is barely averaging 30 points vs garbage. My concern is vs Penn State and Michigan.

IMO, I saw enough to where it was a flash back of 2021. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think I am.

Steele was benched for Simon but imo that’s not the proper channel. I’d really like to see Hicks in at LB and then Styles shifted to LB in obvious passing situations.
