Buckeyes enter The Game with these defensive ranks nationally:

#1 in yards per play (3.99), Iowa is at 4.00, Pedsters are at 4.11, tCun is at 4.21

#1 in pass efficiency defense (92.73), ND is at 95.81, tCun is at 97.95, Iowa is at 98,36

#2 in scoring defense (9.27), tCun is at 9.00, Iowa is at 12.36, Pedsters are at 12.45

#3 in total defense (252.9), tCun is at 234.8, Pedsters are at 238.7

As I said in the game thread, just finish at #1 in scoring defense after Saturday.

No pressure, right?
That’s what has made The Game THE GAME for nigh on a century now

A 12 game playoff changes that
a divisionless B1G changes that
, and yes, to me at least, the Shit Stains Up North shitting on the integrity of the game changed that for me

there used to be a time where, if they quit the sport, I would have missed The Game

now?

If we lose The Game because they quit the sport I would not give a fuck.

not Even if they do it B4 we take the lead in the series

I recently posted about the 2023 defense in the thread for the 2024 defense as last year's edition for the Silver Bullets serves as the foundation for what they will be this year. But what they accomplished last year deserves to be appreciated on its own merits; they really were far more uncommonly good than I thought before I ran the numbers.

As stated previously, I am dismissing what the Cheaters did last year, both in terms of their defense and in terms of what their offense did against the Buckeyes. I do so because I think everyone should, including the NCAA.

Having said that, even if you don't dismiss The Game from last year's stats, the Buckeyes STILL held their opponents to less than 40% of their usual point production. That is something that had only been accomplished twice in the previous decade (2016 Alabama and 2019 Georgia). Even if you don't dismiss the numbers that the cheaters amassed by cheating, the 2023 Buckeyes were among the top 3 defenses of the past 11 years (The Buckeyes actually rank between the other 2 but the numbers are so close it might as well be called a 3 way tie). This places the 2023 Silver Bullets in the top 99.7% of defenses.

If you DO dismiss the stats posted by the cheating cheaters (and you should, as should the NCAA), then the 2023 Silver Bullets were among the 2 best defenses in the NCAA since at least 2009, (and probably for much longer) putting them in the top 99.9% -- literally.

As much as we are looking forward to the 2024 Silver Bullets, give the 2023 squad their due. They were, according to DSD, the best Ohio State defense in literally 50 years and stand as one of the best defenses in the history of college football. That's not hyperbole; it's a fact.

The top 4 in total defense last year were all from the B1G. Ohio State ranks 2nd or 3rd depending on how you slice it...

But when you look at differential yards per play, the Buckeyes were far and away the best last year (They were also the best when you look at differential yards per game). The top 3 teams below all had their game against The Cheaters elided for the purpose of this discussion, as all games involving The Cheaters should be elided from all discussions, especially where the NCAA is concerned. The Cheaters own DTD (ypp) is shown just to rub it in that they weren't really the best defense, even though they cheated (all of the top 3 are still above The Cheaters even if you include their games against The Cheaters).

As I said before; I didn't appreciate how good the Silver Bullets were last year. I knew they were good, but I didn't realize how good.

What we are going to witness, starting in 66 days, is likely to be historic.

Enjoy it while it lasts fellas

Why the defensive tackles are the key to the Ohio State football team's defense

The Ohio State football team is going to have one of the best defenses in the country this season. The defensive tackles are the key to it.

The Ohio State football team is supposed to have one of the best defenses in the country this season. Last year, they were elite as well. Not only did they have the second-best scoring defense in the country, but they also had the best pass defense in the country.

The only part of the defense that wasn't as good was the run defense. They allowed 112.5 yards per game on the ground, which was the 23rd-best mark in the country. That's not bad, but it's not elite like the other numbers they put up. They also allowed the third-fewest total yards.

That's why the defensive tackles are going to be the key to the defense this season. Tyleik Williams and Ty Hamilton are back up front. They combined for five sacks last season and Williams in particular showed some burst up the middle on passing downs.

Those two defensive tackles will be tasked with plugging up the middle on run plays. If they can do that better than the Ohio State football team did last year, those rush yards per game totals will go down. Teams are already going to be afraid to throw the ball against them because of how good the secondary is.

Ohio State knows that they will be a defensive team again this season. Defense is how they won most of their games a year ago because the offense didn't have a consistently explosive pass game. They won't again this season, but it will be a little bit better in that regard.

Jim Knowles has transformed this defense into a powerhouse unit. Before he took over, big plays were given up at an alarming clip. That was an issue in his first season as defensive coordinator too. Since then, they've been very good at that. This team's defense is going to be brutally tough to beat.
