2023 Bowl Games Discussion

Maybe to you, but it sure would to me and I believe many others. I’d much rather lose to K-State orUNC… BTW, I remember when Woody lost an early ooc game to UNC and reaction was much like Mich/Appy.

People react irrationally to losses for a variety of reasons, myself included. That doesn't make a team good enough to reach the Orange Bowl remotely close to an FCS team.

Everywhere I look projects Louisville in the Orange for OSU. CBS sports says 5-7 Minnesota is going to a bowl (didn't say why or which one).

We do. Playing Louisville in a bowl game is like playing U Cincinnati. Nothing to be gained, something to be lost. Playing Louisville is like being invited to the Motor City Bowl to play a MAC team.
Maybe it's a regional perception of UL.

Playing Cincy for Ohio State obviously has the in-state implications. UL is more like Utah. A former G5 who has been in the P5 for about a decade now. Not the best brand but taken more seriously than Cincy/UCF who just joined the P5.

I have more memories of Louisville putting up 63 points on a ranked FSU and winning a Heisman than I do of them being a lower tier program that losing to would be akin to losing to fcs App State.

They need 82 spots. There are 79 teams with 6+ wins. James Madison and Jax St (in their 2-year transition period) get the next 2 spots, Minny may have the best APR of all the 5-win teams, if that’s how they still prioritize the 5-win teams. Row the APR Boat.

Louisville isn't an FCS team but they are most certainly a mid major.

This would be like UC knocking us off in some non CFP Bowl and no, it doesn't matter what the history of the Bowl game is. That was then, this is now.

It will be getting knocked off by a mid major in a meaningless Bowl game. Added to Day's big game woes, it will certainly hurt recruiting if nothing else.

Some Buckeye fans are angry and hurt and will take it out on whatever or whoever is convenient. How else can you explain a coach would takes his team to a surprising 11-1 record with a new QB and almost all new oline be considered to "suck" and "should be fired". Everyone wants to talk about his 1-3 record against dUMb, but won't mention how he owns Ped or Notre Dame.

And now, the Orange Bowl, one of the oldest and most prestigious of the bowls suddenly is "meaningless"

This is what the playoffs have done and on many levels it's shity.

People bemoan NIL, the portal, and conference realignment as the things killing CFB. And while there are valid arguments to be made in favor of that take (particularly conference realignment, i.e. literally killing the Pac12), I personally believe that the playoffs have done more to ruin the "mystique" (for lack of a better word at the moment) of College Football.

Going to a bowl game used to be a reward, not it's viewed as a punishment if it isn't a CFP bowl. And with playoff expansion, regular season match ups that used to hold so much weight, run the risk of becoming essentially meaningless. It used to be if say, Alabama lost to Ole Miss, it would practically ruin any chance of winning a title that year. Now, it would hurt it, but there's so much margin for error. A team could lose 3 games next year and still be in the NC championship race. To me, that's not college football. That's the NFLjr.

Your perception of K-State is interesting, given they're behind Louisville in just about every measure. K-State's all time win percentage is .460, despite their Bill Snyder generated renaissance. Louisville's is .526, with more conference titles and more bowl wins. The two times they've met, Louisville won. But despite all of that, you'd be cool losing to K-State - a sub .500 program - and losing to Louisville would feel like losing to an FCS team.

The key word being "feel" in this case, because nothing backs it up.

As for UNC, they are a bit higher than Louisville in most metrics. But guess who has won head-to-head more often? (Hint: not UNC)

I don't think OSU is losing to any of them unless half the starters opt out. These days, that's a distinct possibility.

15 years ago, I'd agree.

In 2023?

They've been a P5 team for a decade and is playing in the title game of a P5 conference. Imo they've grown beyond mid-major status into a major program, albeit a lower-tiered major program.

In fact, I'd say, in the ACC they are probably closer to the upper echelon of programs, just below FSU (traditionally) and Clemson (recently).

They are on a tier with UNC, Miami, and maybe Virginia Tech (although they've really gone downhill since Beamer retired).

People whined and cried about "settling it on the field" championship-wise. But you NEVER are going to settle it because someone will say they got fucked out. What the fuck is wrong with winning the Big Ten, and then going to the Rose Bowl and winning that? Who gives a flying fuck if Alabama or LSU does the same in the SEC and Sugar Bowl? Makes for debates. But noooooo, gotta have "playoffs" so Joe Rich Fuck can go the the "big game" and it will be like the NFL. Fuck that. I'm getting real tired of this playoff shit.

And when the B1G has the top 2 finishers without divisions "go to the playoffs" and The Game becomes "meaningless" to these same dipshits because they play one week later, I hope they're happy.
