"RJ Moten disagrees with Jim Harbaugh's assertion that Michigan football will have a "no-star" defense this fall.

"We're all stars. Every person that will play this year is a star," Moten said Friday afternoon. "I don't care what the critics say; I don’t care what anybody else says. We will be the best defense in the nation."

Cancer ended his football dreams but Muskegon senior still foresees bright future
Dametrius Walker was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer this past fall.

It could no longer be avoided.
"It took me six months to make the tweet," Dametrius Walker remembers.
It was time everyone knew the truth.
"All the coaches had been blowing me up."
More importantly, it was time, for one of the best high school players in West Michigan to move on with his life.
Whether he was ready or not.
"I thought for once, I don't know what's going to go on," said Walker. "It was the first time in my life that I don't know what's going to happen."
It all began going sideways for the 17-year-old last fall. A few games into his junior season at Muskegon, the three-star tight end started experiencing pain in his left knee. He thought it was a minor injury. It wasn't.
"It was Osteosarcoma," Walker explained. "It's a rare bone cancer."
Walker had offers to play college football from 10 division one schools including Michigan State, Syracuse and Kentucky. Now doctors were telling him football was off the table. Forever.
"Oh my when I found out I was like, 'Oh man, life is about to change.'' Walker said.
Within weeks, he was a regular at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. Once doctors discovered chemo wouldn't be enough to remove his tumor, Walker was forced to go under the knife .
"We cut out my ACL and my PCL and some other things. We replaced all that with metal. It affected my life so much."
But when Walker began another round of chemo in the spring, his outlook was different. In his mind, the cancer didn’t stand a chance.
"It really made me much stronger than who I was. You have to be very strong to go through chemo and fight cancer."
Ultimately, it took Walker 216 characters to sum up his situation.
His tweet read: "My recruitment with football is over with I got diagnosed with osteosarcoma in my left knee a couple months back which made me get a knee replacement Thank you college coach’s for all your support for believing in me!"
Upon hitting send, Walker admits there was sadness. Surprisingly though, there was also peace. He’s finished playing football but by no means is he finishing living.
"I'm very happy right now. Chemo treatment is almost over. Still got my life. I'm excited as I ever can be."

WELL DONE, MICHIGAN

132204_h.jpeg

Sometimes, it's important to take a step back and focus on the good things that Michigan does, even if it is tough to do so. This is one of those times.
Dametrius Walker had a dream of playing for the Wolverines and received 10 Division I football offers. Those dreams and aspirations came to a sudden halt when the former Muskegon standout was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer. Now in hospice care, Walker was able to achieve his goal of playing at Michigan and even scored a touchdown in Michigan Stadium on Saturday, when Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines invited him to participate in their practice.

DFBIA comical take of the day

Mazi Smith is the second coming of Vince Wilfork.

I'd pose the question that if he is comparable to a guy who was one of the best if not the top NT in the league for some years, why did he return to Michigan for another year instead of going pro and showing out in the big leagues?

He was just ok on the field last year, nothing particularly spectacular. another workout warrior like Rashan Gary, who vastly underperformed while at scUM but might get drafted decently high based on said workout warrior ability.

I'll go with the under even though the Freaks List made him sound like the second coming of Aaron Donald. It's just so rare for even a dominant nose tackle to have both the first step and power to slam through double teams coming from the center and guard.

Vince Wilfork is considered a great NFL NT around which a D-line could be built, and in top sacks years he had 3 and averaged like 1.5 per year over his career. The NT is almost always the unsung hero of a great D-line, and that would be exactly what we'd want from Mazi.

Take on double teams, stuff the run up the middle, push the pocket back, and free up space for the DE's, LB's and safeties to make plays and he will have done everything and more than we need.

Vince Wilfork? - Yes please!

Guess which stat line is Wilfork’s first three seasons and which is Smith’s.

Note: Miami’s online stats are absolute trash and I took Wilfork’s total tackles and split them 50/50 between solo and assisted for his 2003 season because that information wasn’t available.

Comparing the sound bites coming out of each camp this year is very telling.

When it comes to ACTUAL practice reports, you're going to be hard pressed to find anything very encouraging so far.

All you get is players/coaches running their mouths without any substance and continuous chest beating about last year still. Most of the rambling being about last year still could lead one to believe that not much good stuff is being seen when it comes to the coming season.
