Michigan occasionally beats Ohio State for a recruit. Donovan Peoples-Jones is the best example over the past five years, but Ohio State also pursued (however tepidly) a few other Michigan signees (Oliver Martin; Daxton Hill; Nolan Rumler; Braiden McGregor; Blake Corum) during that time.

Michigan's problem isn't that they can't beat Ohio State in head-to-head recruiting battles, it's that they don't even try to do so. Michigan seems intent on recruiting kids who are nowhere near Ohio State's radar, a "strategy" that obviously hasn't worked for them. You can't beat Ohio State with a team full of players who weren't good enough to go to Ohio State.

But scUM didn't really beat OSU for a scUM legacy. There hasn't been a battle between the 2 schools for recruits for quite some time. The high rated guys who scUM gets since Hairball has been there, he had to hire family members or former coaches, the kids were legacies like DPJ or kids we just gave up on recruiting due to coaches no longer being interested/having better alternatives(i.e. Derrick Green and Kareem Walker).

So what's it going to fix for them exactly?

"Hey come maybe slip into the playoff once every 3 years to get destroyed in the first round"

They are as convinced that a 12 team playoff will fix recruiting inequality as they were that 5 stars would be lining up to play for Harbaugh.

It's not that they don't win enough to make any damn playoff format, it's not the lack of NFL development (above the 7th round), it's not things like atmosphere, real life Wednesday's or NIL...it's just being able to tell the kids "you can make the playoffs just like OSU and Bama do.."

Kids aren't going to be drawn away from Ohio State, Clemson, Bama & The SEC because the playoff expands. These places have proven to breed top flight NFL talent. Thats where kids want to get to. Winning is nice but making the playoffs maybe once every 3/4 years to get stomped on right away is not exactly a golden recruiting pitch.

Last year was weird but the world saw that OSU was clearly superior to Clemson and that Bama was clearly that much better than OSU but we need to see how Cincinnati does to know for sure?

The days of Bama/Clemson/OSU/OU/and I guess ND to an extent dominating playoff spots are far from over, unlike DFBIA thinks. There's just going to be more cannon fodder on the way to that conclusion now.

I'm assuming a 12 team playoff would have the top 4 with BYEs and the other 8 playing in the 1st round.

If this existed in the CFP era the years scUM woulda made it.

2016

ScUM Finished #6 so they would have matched up with #11 Florida State in the 1st round.

Florida State happened to beat scUM in the Orange Bowl that year. But for arguments sake, if they happened to win the hypothetical 1st round game. Their 2nd round Opponent would be #2 Clemson. Of course a game which they would be ran off the field.

2018

#7 scUM lands a first round matchup with #10 Florida. Who also beat (destroyed) Michigan in the bowl game that year but If they happened to somehow win under different circumstances, they get matched up with #3 Notre Dame, who they already lost to earlier in the year.

A 12 team playoff changes about nothing for scUM other than maybe giving them a extra game if they happen to get in and get a gifted matchup.

A decimated MSU with a 1st year HC beat scUM, sure it could've been because scUM underestimated them, but I also think that scUM has no team identity. They have games where they want to be a spread offense(speed in space), then they want to be a smash mouth offense using multiple RBs to control the game, but then they want to be a cute gimmicky offense with trick plays. And they're not good at any of them. Just like on defense they want to be imposing and send creative blitzes in a 3-4, or they want to use their back 7 as a strength and try to use S as LBs and use LBs in space, etc, and again, they're not good at those schemes either. We have yet to see what MSU will become under Tucker, but damn if as boring as Dantonio was we knew what his teams were. Hard nosed, punch you in mouth, control the clock, essentially a poor man's Tressel ball because he couldn't get the same level of talent as Tress. Having no identity in football is far worse than having an identity(no matter how predictable it is).

Uh you do realize that scUM making the CFP enables them to keep Hairball even longer! Its a great thing... For US! The DFBIA would blow their loads all over the state if they could ever make it into the CFP, even if they lose by 5TDs in the CFP, they would be happy enough to just be in it! That's bragging rights for them.

I laugh at the committee thinking that expansion will change anything when it comes to the same teams winning the NC and competing for it yearly. All the CFP did was destroy any type of parity that CFB fans thought that they had in the sport. And the façade that the regular season will be diminished is funny, because it hasn't been important in years. You could really argue it gives even less parity, Bama, Ohio State, Clemson, Notre Dame and OU are basically going to be in every year unless they slip and lose 3 games (hell some year they are liable to even get in with 3 losses)
