I didn't know UC had real fans. The only "UC fans" I know are people who live in/near Cincinnati and want to see them do well. Like, say you lived in England somewhere and didn't really care about Soccer or Futbol or whatever, but the local team starts doing well. You might start cheering for them this year because it'd be cool to see a championship there. But then if they lose, you're back to really not caring. I thought that was 90% of UC's "fanbase".

See

they didn’t have football fans until Brian Kelly got there

Also, fucc TTUN. 100 won't be enough.

Did you see the "crowd" at the Northwestern - Nebraska game? The cameramen were definitely told to keep a tight focus on the field. Did you see a packed Camp Randall to watch the Badgers and Cadets slug it out? How about this week in Bloomington? An extra home game for the Buckeyes? I wouldn't be surprised if a significant portion of the alumni band makes the trip just to increase the Buckeye atmosphere.

My point? 1. Winning always has an impact on attendance. 2. Television is constantly offering up better matchups, better games. 3. The OOC scrimmages that Ohio State schedules are beginning to see the impact of fans not willing to go. 4. Like it or not, Nippert Stadium is a cool place to watch a game. Not a single seat has a blocked or obscured view. Beer has been sold in UC facilities long before Ohio State. 5. But yeah, UC fans, like the fans at Northwestern, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan State, Purdue, all of the ACC except Clemson, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Iowa State, and all but Oregon in the PA12, turn out when they have something to cheer about. When they don't, they turn to TV.

At the same time, a trend is beginning to show up at the 'shoe. Fewer fans are willing to pay $90 to watch a regular-season scrimmage. Gene Smith has tried the sliding scale, using ticket master to cut down on scalping, and there are new ticket schemes coming up as I write this. But in today's market winning may not be enough to fill the stadium for every game.

I see people going for a game or two for the experience but not showing up every week. Watching on a 75" 4K tv with 5.1 sound with reasonably priced alcohol and good food just equals out the experience for most games.

Also, how else would I be able to follow the game thread if I wasn't shitfaced on my couch?

One side of it: There is nothing like a big game atmosphere. I won't miss those for inconvenience, expense or weather if at all possible. Additionally, the team needs the support. They do their thing, we fans do ours. Sometimes that isn't perfectly comfortable.

The other side of it: I'm not going out of my way for games against Akron and the like. Downside to OSU being on such a historic level is that almost everyone they play falls into the "should be an ass kicking, I'll just stay at home" category.

I agree with both.
For the first one, watch a highlight video of awesome Buckeye games of the past X years. It's much more fun to say, "I was at that game, and that one, and that one," than it is to say, "I remember watching that game on TV." Of course, it's a long drive home from a game they just lost.

I remember walking back to my buddy's apartment after the loss to USC, funny how even while drunk it was longest, soberest walk I've ever taken in my life(though the walk to the game, was the most fun)

I started attending OSU games as a Frosh in 1967.

Saw us beat Michigan 52-14 in 1968. Watched us beat them 42-39 in 2006. I wouldn't trade those experiencers for anything.

I was also there for the MSU loss in 1998 and the Illinois loss in 2007. Part of what makes me appreciate every win.

This year I have turned down two sets of free tickets for Akron and Tulsa. Cost wasn't the issue.

If God had wanted me back in C Deck he wouldn't have made me trade in my knees for an HDTV.

Yeah, I think most at this point agree when it comes to live sporting events. TVs have become better and cheaper over the years, and the experience of being live, isn't as big as it once was. I was offered tickets to OSU @ IU in 2012, and turned them down because my roommate and I purchased a 72in TV. I was living in Indy at the time, and went to a Colts game, but man there is something to going to your own bathroom. and eating your own food. And I used to love going to live events, but too many drunk A-holes have lessened my desire to attend.

That would have been the score if Woody’s famous 2-point conversion (“Because I couldn’t go for 3”) had been successful.
