DL and DB seems to be the squads where we are most able to just plug in the new guys and not miss a beat on defense. LB has been the wild card.

I sincerely believe that "has been" are the operative words here.

The talent here is very deep. Browning in particular was starting to show what he was capable of last season.

Zach Harrison is another generational talent. Teams will have to gameplan around him. Trey Sermon is going to prove to be more than adequate and is an outstanding pass receiver out of the backfield.

The loss of Okudah will hurt the most early in the season. Who takes Shaun Wades spot from last year? Question mark there.

I think Wade's nickel spot is now replaced by Cam Brown or Sevyn Banks...I'd just say, keep in mind whoever takes the nickel spot, isn't necessarily the "loser" of the CB battle. Wade likely could've started over Arnette, opposite Okudah, had Hafley wanted to go more conventional with top 2 CB's playing outside. But Wade was really unique in his skillset.

It will be interesting though....Hafley and Coombs philosophy (going back to Coombs time at tOSU) was significantly different. Hafley mixed in significantly more zone, and more exotic blitzes, including Wade coming on nickel blitzes frequently. Coombs evolved a lot in Tennessee where they mixed up coverages a lot. When he was at tOSU under Meyer, they were almost exclusively in man.

I would agree wholeheartedly and would add that now we have a competent coach overseeing that group. The experience and depth is unreal at the LB position this season. On DL, we definitely have some players and while I think Harrison can make a jump similar to Young, I think it's going to be awfully tough to replicate Young. What he did last year was unreal. I do think cumulatively that the experience Ty Smith, Friday, Togiai, etc. got last year is going to help cover up the difference at DE. At DT, the only somewhat proven commodity is Togiai. We need Vincent, Jackson, Cage and Garrett to step up in a big way, but the talent is definitely there.

At DB, my trust in Coombs to keep that group at an elite level is as high as it could be and Wade returning is crucial. But Okudah and Arnette were unreal last year and whether Wade can flat out eliminate the other team's best receiver remains to be seen. I can say that I really like what we've seen from Banks and Brown a lot, but they've got a big leap to make. I've also really liked Williamson when he's healthy and the coaches said he had a great camp. Would love to see Tyreke Johnson step up because he's like a Wade clone in terms of size and talent. I honestly think aside from Young the biggest loss on defense might be Fuller... tons of experience and leadership, and he was the true definition of a safety net in center field. I like Proctor and his potential, but the opposite safety is a huge question mark to me. Hopefully Hooker is like his brother but who knows. I wouldn't be surprised to even see a freshman like Kourt Williams or Ransom to win the spot.

On offense, I think Dobbins is clearly the biggest loss. Hill, Victor and Mack were great but we're loaded to the gills with talent there and Hartline will develop it. Olave, Wilson and Jameson Williams are going to be a nightmare to defend and the freshman class coming in (or some of them) are going to play. At RB, I think we're going to be really happy with Sermon although JK is tough to replace. Was talking with an OU fan that was raving about him and with that OL, he's going to produce. On the OL, it should be one of the best if not the best and that's how you win championships. But I think there might be some times where we miss Dobbins.

Anyways, happy to be having this discussion in this thread again. So excited for this season!

It's going to be really interesting to see how Coombs aligns our secondary. Hafley was a lot more unique than most recognize. We really only played one safety the entire year in Jordan Fuller. Proctor got limited time, but we rarely used a SS last year. Pete Werner played a hybrid role a lot on third down with Fuller, Okudah, Arnette, and Wade.

I think a lot of that was driven by Wade's versatility, Werner's coverage ability, and faith in Fuller to clean up in center field. If Proctor can't be trusted as the last line of defense, I'd imagine we see more true SS play. If we play like last year, and Proctor mans the position Fuller had, I think you see Wade, Cam Brown, and Sevyn Banks with Werner continuing to be a 3 down linebacker.

A game hasn’t been played yet ..this is a conference that called the season 5 days after releasing the schedule. You might want to wait till a game is played before waving the white flag.
I was thinking the B1G would start at Tgiving or later, and in the meantime that would mean no W Davis, S Wade, J Fields, T Sermon, Chris Olave, and anyone else who is draft eligible.

I was waving the white flag because the B1G farted around for a month + after saying "this decision will not be revisited" and it appeared that no matter what they decided or when, the team we expected to see in the fall was not going to be the team we saw in late fall, winter, or spring.

But, the B1G revisited the thing that was not going to be revisited.
