I’m speculating, but I believe it has to do with the Big 10 testing plan.

The Big 10 will be testing daily (the most of any conference) and using a rapid test.

But that process takes time to setup. Labs across the Big 10 campuses will need to be certified and that takes some time.

I think the Oct 23rd/24th start date reflects the time needed to get all Big 10 teams ready for the rapid tests they plan on conducting, starting Oct 1.

And remember, any player who tests positive is out 21 days. So I think expectation is many players will test positive Oct 1, and they’ve built in a mechanism to handle that situation by starting games on the 23rd/24th.

Also, on the testing, it’s worth noting not if a player is positive on a rapid rest, they receive a PCR test; and it takes a positive result on that as well before the player is out. Important so that false positives don’t nail guys.

Dream scenario is OSU goes 6-0 because games are cancelled while SEC champ goes 8–2. Would make this fuckery worth it.

I haven't looked at the rest of the league's schedule close enough yet but it looks like it's set up to where they'll all likely hang another L on each other.

Almost zero doubt OSU has to go 9-0 and do it pretty convincingly. We'll win no beauty contest with the schedule this year (not that we ever do).

The middle of our schedule is complete garbage. We literally go through 5 weeks straight of nothing after Penn State.

With a nod to the weather in the last 3 weeks. No one has ever played that late, outdoors in Illinois, eat Lansing and Columbus. Add in the fact the strength of this team will likely be the passing game and it’s no small concern.
