2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

But, yeah...Archie Miller was never a remote possibility
Bullshit. Indiana moved fast on firing Crean to beat tOSU to the punch, imo. If our AD was competent he could've had Miller wrapped up before Crean's season was over. All we can do is hope Miller is a bust in Bloomington. Or, if he's successful, it forces a change in the AD here. But how much do we trust the Drake if it comes to that?

Agreed, Miller was ours if Smith was remotely competent...it was the job he wanted regardless of what he said after he took the IU job. Smith has remained the AD despite his own failures and only because OSU is too established to fail in the major sports. People point to football to support GS, yet he was deliberately left out of the primary negotiations with UFM so that he would not mess up a sure thing. I give him zero credit to Gene for that and 100% of it to the trustees, boosters and UFM's roots in Ohio. We somehow still pulled it off after his decision to have a 6-6 Gator Bowl rather than take one year of medicine so we could have played in a real game the next year.

Literally everyone knew that Matta needed to go at the end of the year, even those who were staunch Matt supporters (count me as one that hated to admit it, yet knew it). Instead, Gene says "Fuck it, let me wait to do this until no viable options are there and when a clear option is present." Maybe one pops up but if it does, I contend it will be by pure fate, the money we have to throw at it, and/or Ohio State's institutional success as a whole if that happens, in complete spite of Gene Smith.

Miller will be successful in Bloomington but hopefully we can find someone of the same caliber within the next year or two. I can't pretend to know who that might be, but I hope it happens. I hate to just turn this into a vent about the shortcomings of Gene Smith but shit, this is stuff a 3rd grader could have figured out.

I'm talking about him coming up in discussions RIGHT NOW. Not that he was never a possibility.

UA President Robert Robbins Says OSU Can Get Sean Miller 'Over My Dead Body'

University of Arizona president Dr. Robert Robbins made it clear he's going to do everything in his power to keep Wildcats head basketball coach Sean Miller away from Ohio State University following Thad Matta's exit from the Buckeyes.

On Tuesday, Anne Ryman of the Arizona Republic passed along comments from Robbins, who was confident in the school's ability to keep its coveted coach.

"The Ohio State University is great university, but they are not going to get Coach Miller," he said. "They will have to come over me to get him, as the saying goes, over my dead body."

Dumbass. You're Arizona. Don't act like Ohio State has the possibility of taking your coach if you want to be big time.

I have to think Gene has this. He fucked up the bowl ban issue but, other than that, he's been fine as AD.
hard to fuckup hiring Urban Meyer... have to check with @ORD_Buckeye but didn't he fire a rather successful Hockey coach... and the baseball hire well... its been up and down.

Actually agree with this. His early tenure was awful but Ohio State University athletics are across the board in the best position they have been in- save for the basketball and baseball program. Seems like everything else has gone well and financially they are the top of the game.

Really hoping it's just the token offer to Jent to let him interview.
It's more part of a mandatory process to hire for a position at a public university.

My guess for a timeline on all of this is that in April when Beazly bailed, Lyle left the team and Thompson signed with an agent Smith decided to fire Matta. From then until last Friday he has been conducting his search. By last Friday he had arrived at a "gentleman's agreement" with our next coach. Now we are going through the administrative process.

The only thing that surprises me about an announcement this week is that they would be able to announce the position and close the process so quickly.
