2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

This is a public institution and I believe there is a certain level of bureaucracy involved. Position formally announced, candidates interviewed, etc.

It could well be the next coach has been identified and we are simply waiting on that process to unfold - including the smoke screen that makes it look like the next coach has not already been identified.

This seems highly unusual. I've only seen it done with a retiring CEO, which may be an insight into whether Thad intends to coach again. It feels like something you do when interviewing a young, inexperienced coach...as opposed to an established commodity like Billy Donovan, for example.

That's the one part that gives me pause that Gene for some reason doesn't have all his ducks in a row. There would be no need for this with a big name coach, or even many of the ones from smaller schools.

We can only hope they have a whale in the bag. When it's June and a guy like Chris Mack is already pulling his name, things could get really ugly.

From memory, Thad originally said no Ohio State off the cuff and had said something publicly about him not being interested in the Ohio State job. Within the week, there was a press conference announcing Thad Matta as Ohio State's next coach.

Wouldn't write Mack off COMPLETELY yet, but hope Gene did his due diligence on the phone calling around and getting the temperature of some potential coaches before that meeting with Matta on Monday.

And for all the talk about timing, Matta was announced as head coach on July 7th.

Mack played at X and has a great set up here - Cintas is a better venue than Schott - and X fills the place even as they play games against St. Agnes - and UC will be playing in a dump for the next year or two while their house is being renovated.
