2017 Offensive Coordinator Discussion

The last two years will go down as a cautionary tale about both promoting from within, and hiring friends of employees. If Meyer is truly trying to create the best program in college football, Warinner at OC/ Beck at QBC is not going to cut it. This time around, I hope Urban does his due diligence to make sure he hires two elite coaches.
Urban's issue is he's loyal to a extreme fault. He gives people multiple opportunities to right their wrongs and yes it can cost him sometimes.

IMO I'm torn on it as well because I see what Saban has done and I must say I loath how he treats his people. On the other hand he produces results like literally no one ever has.

Urban needs to find a balance of not giving people too many opportunities and then not giving people enough. IMO 1 year is fine when it comes to a program like ohio state because the talent will always be there, and if you can't produce a top flight unit then you should go.

What was disconcerting to me was that when Meyer said we needed to get Samuel the ball more, the solution the offensive coaches came up with was 1) just putting him in the backfield and handing the ball off to him- see: Wisconsin 2) just throwing him the ball in the flats- see: Clemson.

Just getting him the ball in the most simple ways possible is not the answer. You still need a scheme that exploits the defense by utilizing your most explosive weapon in creative ways.

The utter lack of utilizing Braxton last year was a travesty- to highlight that this isn't a recent issue with these coaches.
Not disagreeing with anything you're saying here, but I was so frustrated last year with how they used Miller I was rooting for them to just hand the ball off to him once in a while.

I actually don't have much of a problem with handing it off to Samuel, but yeah these flipping "hey here's the ball 5 yds behind the line, no one is blocking the DE, good luck!" Shit was doomed from the start.

At ~65 years old now, Saban has probably had a lot longer to figure out the logistics of building a dynasty. I think Meyer will make great changes for '17, and will be on his way to doing that, but his own way. If he stays at OSU for 20 years, the Beck nightmare will be a distant memory and all but forgotten, overshadowed by resounding success.

I would guess it should go like this.
  1. Call Chip Kelly and ask him to commit a year or two. Because he seems like a special kind of asshole, he likely wouldn't take an OC position, then:
  2. Ask Chip Kelly who he would hire. It worked the last time with Tom Herman. But it has to be less read option based.
  3. Call Tom Herman and ask him what he thinks is wrong who he would hire, even though he is trying to hire the same position.
  4. Call Kevin Wilson (again, reportedly) and vet him even further.
  5. Get someone who is currently an OC in a pass heavy offense.
Ultimately, Urban is going to have to pick a direction. Does he want the power spread read option as his base offense, or does he want a spread to pass? What did they promise recruits? Joe Burrowns and Haskins are effective, but not dynamic runners. My think they need to keep the power spread and develop a pass game with quicker passes. I think the key here is that the hire has to be familiar and proficient at going against current defenses that are designed to play well against the spread. My guess is, it looks something like Oklahoma with Sam Bradford, and that's why I think Kevin Wilson, or someone like Kevin Wilson, makes a lot of sense. He was the architect for Oklahoma, and i know there is some concern about OC's who have had success in the Big 12, but also has put up big numbers on Big 10 defenses with marginal talent. But then again, maybe Kevin Wilson is also a special kind of asshole.

You're just not gonna have less read option, I don't think.

Have they really run it this year as base offense? They tried to go away from it last year because it was the only way they could move the ball. They've run the sprint option and had predesigned keepers, but I don't see JT reading the DE's on a consistent basis. Either way, I'm fine with our without, but you better have a base that you can rely on.

Id be cool if they never ran that sprint option play ever again. Pretty sure 75% of the time it nets us a loss or no gain.

Saban learned from Belichick, who will likely end his career as the greatest football coach of all time. They both know what it takes to win, and they'll do whatever it takes - just ask Lane Kiffin. Besides, it's not like it makes Urban an asshole if he fires someone who's had two entire years to learn how to coach an offense loaded with 4 and 5* recruits,
