2017 Offensive Coordinator Discussion

Watching the Pedsters completely Sandusky the USC defense...you know, the same Pedsters we all but shut down at their place. Funny what on offense can do with some confidence, execution, and most importantly, creative play calling.

Watching the Penn State game reminds me of a comment made by Meyer in an interview several games ago. When he was asked about the passing game he said something to the effect that "Ohio State isn't going to just go sling it around. That's not how we do it here". Football is a game of risks and it seems to me that Ohio State takes zero risk in the passing game. They don't throw players open. They don't make back shoulder throws. They don't have a fuck it we're going after it mentality on offense.

Perhaps this has been drilled into JT so much that this is the reason that he holds on to the ball and won't just let it fly. Sometimes you have to trust that you have the better athletes and given the opportunity they can make the plays.

EXACTLY. The Offensive coaches at PSU have developed the players on Offense and are not afraid to go vertical in their play calling. It doesn't hurt to have Barkley either. Zeke played a similar role for us.

Not dangerous when you don't have a semblance of an offense in the first place.

Beck just said two days ago that they don't have an offensive identity. Can't lose what you don't have.

Not arguing that there needs to be decisive change right now. I would've been happy to see Beck gone after last season so that would've been an obvious quick change.

I'm talking about hiring OCs and firing them in a season or less. That's usually not the case, but can cause issues as well.

I can only dream of what may have been if Zeke and Mike Thomas stayed and we still had Herman...

Where is he loyal to a fault? He acted pretty quickly and decisevely when the D needed an overhaul three years ago. I don't think it was unreasonable to give Warriner/Beck two years. If those two are still in the same role next year, you have a case, but I don't see giving somebody two years as unreasonable.

I would agree that you normally want to give coaches at least 2 years, but when it becomes absolutely crystal clear that a coach is in over their head and aren't getting the job done, a change needs to be made.

Withers presided over the statistically worst pass defense in Ohio State's 150 year history - a defense that managed to rank 19th overall even in the terrible 2011 season.
Meanwhile, when DCs like Aranda (at Penn State), Chavis (LSU, A&M), Don Brown (scUM) and others have taken over, there has been almost immediate, significant improvement. In that context, the fact that Withers was doing so poorly with a talent pool far in excess of our opponents is a huge red flag and one that should have been picked up on by the end of his first season.

Same deal goes for Beck - it was clear that something major was off offensively last year, although I'll give Urban a pass since it was easy to attribute that to the Cardale/JT saga. This year it was made even more clear in the Wisconsin and Michigan games - a former Heisman finalist QB should not struggle to complete a 10 yard pass in his third season. One game might be attributable to chance, but the entire freaking season?

Anyways, what's done is done. Urban is still relatively early in his tenure at OSU, and I'm guessing he won't be as reticent to make changes as needed in the future. I"m looking forward to our national title run next year (as is tradition post-loss to a SC team)

Weber isn't chopped liver, and he could play a similar clock eating, defense wearing down type RB. But if your OC will only use the QB as the primary RB and use your most dangerous weapon on plays that Stevie Wonder could predict, than the RB doesn't matter and neither does development. I believe we have the athletes, but the play calling has become too predictable and unimaginative. There's no reason that guys like McLaurin ,Clark, Hill and Wilson can't be deep threats

Cincinnati: Sources tell FootballScoop Joker Phillips will join Luke Fickell’s staff at Cincinnati coaching receivers. The former Kentucky head coach served in a quality control capacity at Ohio State this season after coaching receivers for the Cleveland Browns in 2015.

Joker Philips out of the running.. Means Zack Smith will likely be back.

I may still be overreacting to Saturday, but at this point I'd rather have Urban plug in a PS3 on the field and just hit "Ask Corso" every play. We'd get the same seemingly random, unrelated play calling and save however many hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

"Everyone knows that when you play against a dominating defensive line, you call more screens and draws."

Seems our brain trust could use a little more PlayStation action themselves...

Do people really want Zach Smith gone...? That's absurd.

You don't fire one of the top 3 recruiters in college football.

This teams issue is play-calling and putting the kids in the right spots to succeed. We actually played to our weaknesses multiple times this year.....I thought we must be trying to work the kinks out in those specific areas....it turns out our OC(s) just don't have a clue. This will rectified, but this isn't on Zach Smith. Zach Smith isn't the one calling 21 pass plays in the first 27 offensive snaps we had.
