2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

This was not the closest call the College Football Playoff committee has made
By Max Olson 1 hour ago

GRAPEVINE, Texas — From the outside, this looked like the toughest and most controversial College Football Playoff decision in this event’s four-year history.

But inside the selection committee’s conference room at the Gaylord Texan Resort, it didn’t feel that way. They emerged from a weekend of deliberation feeling the decision between Alabama and Ohio State for this year’s No. 4 spot was not as close as it may have looked.

“The committee’s conclusion that Alabama is the fourth-best team in the nation was widespread and strong,” College Football Playoff chairman Kirby Hocutt said Sunday afternoon. “It was unequivocal.”

In fact, CFP executive director Bill Hancock argued last year’s Playoff scenario — Washington and Ohio State in, Penn State out — was a tighter, tougher vote for the committee than this one.

“This wasn’t that close,” Hancock said.

If it wasn't close then this committee's approach was completely wrong as we have begun to realize

3 teams would have gotten in over Alabama had they scheduled a D2 team over a powerhouse game. That's what this decision means.

If Ohio State trades Oklahoma for Mercer. Likely in. Certainly in if they trade Iowa for Mercer
If USC trades Notre Dame for Mercer. Easily in.
If Auburn trades Clemson for Mercer. IN.

JOKE

I get what you're saying, but Auburn did play Mercer...and only beat them by 14.

the silver lining for osu not making the playoff is that the conference's top bowl game match-ups are much more favorable. osu-usc, uw-miami, and psu-wash are all highly winnable games for the b1g teams. had osu been selected to play clemson, the outlook would look quite a bit dimmer overall on a win-loss basis.
Only big ten teams not favored is Arizona over Purdue and wasu over sparty. I’ll take 8-2.

Plenty of reason for optimism for Buckeye nation my friends. This moment will pass and I'm pumped for the Cotton bowl matchup. I hope we continue scheduling quality non-conference games and don't expect we'll see a knee jerk reaction. One relatively simple solution to making the current format less subjective is for all P5 leagues to play 9 conference games and kill FCS scheduling. That adds 7 guaranteed losses to the SEC / ACC each year calibrating SOS for those leagues. In 2017 had we only played 8 conference games Iowa City may not have happened and conversely Bama may have picked up Georgia. I'd advocate for 9 conference games all day long (better quality games) and I think each conference should schedule consistently to mitigate the subjectivity of picking 4 among the 5 conferences.

BTW--is it just me, or was Hocutt flat lying when he said last week that there was very little difference between No. 5 and No. 8? Because since then, OSU went out and won the conference title and beat No. 4. For Alabama to stay in front of OSU, isn't it the case that that difference between No. 5 and No. 8 last week had to have been huge?

Not advocating for OSU in the playoff, just pointing out that Hocutt's statements aren't consistent with the committee's actions.

The argument could be made that guaranteeing spots to conference champions effectively does expand the playoff. Leave it to the conferences to ensure that they are putting forth their "best" team (champ) for playoff consideration... Alabama lost last week to the team that lost the conference this week - that is a totally obvious disqualifier. This is a playoff we're talking about after all.
well, shoot... then i guess the whole season is a playoff, and we should just have the top two teams play each other after all regular season and conference championship games are played. that sounds kind of familiar.

if we're going to have automatic qualifiers for conference championships, fine, then all power 5 conferences should have a team in the playoff. expand to 8. the following satisfies pretty much every consideration and limits seemingly arbitary decisions -- or at least the impact thereof:

1. five power 5 conference champions
2. one group of 5 team if ranked in top 12/15/whatever
3. two at-large teams selected by playoff committee if a qualifying g5 team; three selected if no qualifying g5 team

higher-ranked teams get a home game. winners go on to playoff layout as it now stands. cold-climate programs should be ecstatic to have this set-up.

What bothers me is the last four weeks of the season were:

- Ohio State: curbstomped Michigan St, curbstomped Illinois, beat Michigan in Ann Arbor by two possessions, outplayed Wisconsin on a neutral field in a game that never felt as close as the final score.
- Alabama: struggled on the road against Mississippi St, scheduled Mercer for SEC's annual 'Cupcake Week,' lost to their rival in game that never felt close, and did not play on championship week.

I am 110% confident saying that Ohio State's potential is higher than Alabama's ceiling. The teams are trending in completely opposite directions.

Yeah it was clearly BS cause they are comparable or they are not. If they are say they are if they aren't say they aren't don't tell us they are then tell us they aren't while it was only possible for them to be more comparable by results

Instead of expanding to 8 teams they should just change the criteria for choosing the 4 and make it a little less subjective.

1.) The four teams must be a champion of a power conference unless....

a.) one of the conference champions has 3 losses
b.) Another team has 3 top ten victories
c.) a conference champion has not beaten a ranked opponent.

This would be great. Brings importance back to winning your conference, and can only be overtaken when another team has really been impressive.

absolutely pass on this if I am in charge

Auto conference winner dilutes rivalry week

screw the playoffs. Rivalries are what make CFB unique
