2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

THREE of the top 6 lineman return from last year 4 Of the top 7 if you count Prince. No doubt we take a step back compared to our past few years but IMO it won't be as drastic as people think.

My bigger concern is RB.

My only concern there is depth. Weber is going to be a stud I think and Samuel is going to be good, but of course we don't know on Williams yet and Dontre is always injured. Hopefully we can stay relatively injury free there.

That being said, I am a little concerned on the OL. Plenty of talent on paper...but I will be honest in saying that even if Jordan is all that he is cracked up to be, it does concern me that Lisle and Knox have both been passed by him that quick, as well as Burrell practicing with the freshmen. And OL is a position where you need to be strong and figure out your 5 guys pretty quick so they can mesh.

But hey, we have question marks just about everywhere across the board on both sides of the ball. But we also have a ton of talent and Urban Meyer ran offenses with talent he has recruited...yeah, I think we will be fine.

Who are talented players in their own right... which means Jordan really has to be special if he's beating them out already. Glass half full

to fill it more, I think I saw that he will be the first true freshman to start on the OL at OSU since Pace?

If so, that involves being the first guy to do something at a school like OSu in a 22 year span (1994).

That, is no small thing.

So speaking of his concern for O Line depth, Urbs said Burrell and Knox really need to come on. Then he even mentioned Bowen. Assume by that it means Lisle and Trout are just not going to get it done?

I think there's legit concern about all four (Burrell, Knox, Lisle, Trout) of those guys not meeting expectations. And that's our primary depth behind the starting 5. If anybody else goes down, we're gonna have a leak.

This DDN article from yesterday says Lisle is switching to tackle after Pridgeon's injury:

“You’re gonna hear more about him now because we’re going to play him at some tackle with Malcom being out,” Ohio State offensive line coach Greg Studrawa said. “So there’s an opportunity. What are you gonna do about it? I think he’s gonna be fine. I think he’s gonna learn that spot and go out there and play tackle and help us.”

I think he has the length and the feet to do it. But Lisle is a surprising one...had every tool in the world in high school and usually guys from Centerville come out ready to play. Knew he would need some work on his pass pro but he had the athleticism to do it. Hopefully he takes this opportunity and contributes. Trout is another I thought would be playing pretty quickly

I think you will see the H-Back utilized a ton. RB is razor-thin with Dunn gone and we will need extra bodies to carry the ball. I would imagine that Samuel and Dontre get plenty of touches, maybe even McCall if he is ready to go physically. We need to lighten the load on Weber at the very least. But I think depth alone dictates that the H-Back spot will get used a lot more.

I would not be surprised to see Samuel start at RB and Wilson start at HB. Two veterans who are fast and very explosive players.

I've always been high on Lisle. This could be his chance to see the field some. I, too, hope he makes the most of it.

TIGHT ENDS HAVE A PLACE IN THE 2016 OFFENSE BUT AREN'T QUITE READY TO FILL IT

73383_h.jpg,qitok=fjzqwvkx.pagespeed.ce.tSGu9n7-n3.jpg

Since Urban Meyer's arrival at Ohio State, involvement of tight ends in the offense has always been a sort of promising possibility that never quite materialized. Jake Stoneburner, Jeff Heuerman, Nick Vannett – the talent has always been there, but not necessarily the production.

The Buckeyes have been blessed with so many offensive weapons during Meyer's tenure that tight ends have often become a safety net at best and an after-thought at worst. The problem has not been the quality of player – Stoneburner, Heuerman and Vannett all found NFL homes – but simply that there is only one football to share among an arsenal of playmakers.

In 2016, the situation is quite a bit different than previous years. For starters, the offense returns almost no proven production. The team's top receiver and starting running back have little and no experience, respectively, and the team lost its top five receiving threats.

The Buckeyes return junior Marcus Baugh, who played extensively throughout the 2015 season, as well as redshirt freshman A.J. Alexander and are joined by vaunted freshmen Jake Hausmann and Luke Farrell.

Combine this reality with the fact that offensive coordinator Ed Warinner, who calls the plays for the offense, is now the position coach for the tight ends, and you have a perfect scenario for heavy involvement of tight ends in the offense – in theory.

"OUR NO.1 OBJECTIVE IS TO GET THE BALL TO PLAYMAKERS."– ED WARINNER

"It only makes sense, right?" said Warinner on whether or not he'll work harder to get his position group involved in the offense. Reality, however, remains to be seen.

OHIO STATE WON ITS SEASON OPENER BY 67 POINTS; URBAN MEYER BELIEVES HIS TEAM CAN DO EVEN BETTER

73761_h.jpg,qitok=odt3TWmu.pagespeed.ce.cZ_fCKNN5h.jpg

All Billy Price could do was shrug. A reporter asked about what life is like when Ohio State's football team scores 77 points, sets a school record for offense and yet you come to work and hear from your coaches that it should have been even better.

"We're always chasing perfection," Ohio State's right guard said Monday.

Price is an integral part to his team's success on offense, a three-year starter and someone that grew into a force as the Buckeyes ran over Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon on its way to a national championship two seasons ago. However, he had never been part of an offensive performance like the one Ohio State put on Bowling Green on Saturday. The Buckeyes won 77-10, recorded 776 yards of total offense and picked up 41 first downs. The 77 points were the most Ohio State ever scored under Meyer in what is now his fifth season.

The thing is, those inside the program saw holes.

"I think it was good. It wasn't great. It was good," Urban Meyer said. "Some disappointments that — I think Corey Smith should be better than he is. I think he didn't play great. He's dealing with some injuries. And I don't think that the technique of our wideouts was where it needs to be, even though they did make some very good plays.

"I thought our tailback played good. Offensive line, obviously when you only have one guy grade champion, they didn't play very good. So they have to get much better."

I think last season was very humbling for the football team. All of that preseason praise, and hype and then the letdown against a team that we should've beaten left us out of an NC that should've been defended by us. "Stay hungry" goes hand in hand with the Land of the Wolves theme of the season. And I'm sure that Meyer and staff tell the team how disrespected they are constantly
