Games dont matter for a medical RS. Ben Mauk played in 20 games at WF the year before his injury.
Devin Gardner also played almost a whole year and got a Medical RS as well i believe
you just have to have a great case for him being injured enough to miss next year (if they went that way)
which would be too difficult at this point

Yeah, but it's generally when a player has redshirted once, then was injured very early on in another season. Even then it's been exceedingly rare. The only way I could see it even remotely possible is if he had a recovery time that wiped out his 2015 season...and it's just an ankle fracture. Recovery time was said to be about 6 months.

Like I say we will see, the earliest he can be on the field in an officialpractice will be what 30 days before the first game.

There's only one redshirt. He has used it already. There are two policies that everybody is conflating:
  • There is a medical hardship waiver where an unused redshirt can be applied retroactively toward a season if a player meets certain conditions
  • There is a policy where a player can apply for an additional year of eligibility after they have exhausted their 5 years to play 4 seasons, which is rarely granted.
None of this really matters since he'll be ready to play ball, barring re-injury.

To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:
  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.
