2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

and first and goal from inside the 3 doesn't become second and goal from the 9...

but i think they got that figured out
That's what's lost in some of the QB derby discussions. Cardale was incredibly epic on 3rd and long (which is not a likely to be a reliable thing), but he put them behind in down and distance by his inconsistency, especially operating the option.

Braxton is not an efficient passer but he's usually athletic enough to consistnetly put the team in good situations (though not down the stretch in 2013). JT may not possess Cardale's flamethrower but he's so darn consistent and good at everything that he moves the football.

To be fair to Brax, we were in a good situation against Clemson up til that muffed punt.
That loss was all on Special Teams and Defense... especially considering he was playing through an injury that took him out for the entire next season.

If his arm is 100%, I have no problem with him starting. I trust Urban wouldn't put him out there with 2 heisman candidates on the bench if his shoulder isn't up to it.

With Oregon in East Lansing and Notre Dame early in the season we'll have lots of early information on Sparty. I hope they're good enough to win both games.

Now then, how has Collier looked this spring? Is he getting any snaps?

Curious to see his development and the spring game will be his time with only Cardale as the other participating QB (presumably). Would have been cool to see Burrow or Gibson enroll early but we will have to wait there.

one thing i take into major consideration is how the running back performed under the quarterback

ever since barrett got hurt, elliott has been ripping off big runs, 700 yards worth...3 @ 1/4 games

does jones' arm open the defense for elliott better than barrett's or miller's?

or was it the offensive line gelling at the right time?

i personally think jones opens up the run game unlike barrett...and even miller...he's got the NFL arm

Our best chance to repeat is with JTB at the helm and Jones and Miller working in. The word tends to be overused but he was in the middle of an epic season when he broke his ankle. He doesn't run as well as Braxton, of course, or throw deep as well as Cardale, but he allows the team to run the full offense. We can do more with him in there "doing less" personally than the other two have to when they're in.

You and I rarely disagree, but on this we do. I think we run better overall now with Cardale as the starter. To me, it's no coincidence that Zeke ripped off the only 200-yard games he had all year in the three post-season games, which were quarterbacked by 12 Gauge. The deep threat posed by 12 Gauge opens the run up more, and if he is able to tweak his passing just a tad the offense will be all but unstoppable. Barrett would probably lead us to an undefeated regular season, but with Jones as the starter I'd say it would be a near-lock...

You know the fun part - if you were creating a player, you'd take the good traits from all 3 of them and make one mega-awesome player. It's very odd how all of their skills are held more by one than all the others....

But the tweaks you're talking about, are still a major thing in the grand scheme of things when you're playing as the starting QB of a team trying to repeat and taking every teams best shot. Those tweaks, are Cardale being able to hit small windows in the short and intermediate game and have better touch on the long ball. I still remember a long passes that Cardale overthrew a wide open Devin Smith. If Cardalw can work on his touch, consistency and decision making in the option game, then he's undoubtedly our best QB overall, but that's a big if. JT right now does all of that, except he can't throw the ball with the same arm strength of Cardale(or even Braxton) but I'd rather have an uber accurate QB with very good decision making skills in the option. I understand what you say about EzE being more dangerous with Cardale due to defenses being afraid of the long ball, but width JT teams have to account for literally every skill player on the field because he can read defenses much better than Cardale, IMO. Cardale didnt read defenses well in the last 3 games but because he's the size of a DE, he couldn't exactly be brought down easily either

after watching jones thrash wisconsin beat bama and oregon....i wanted to see him unleashed against VT and the rest of the B1G this year....

I just want to see OSU destroy every opposing team, regardless of the QB. My preference is JT right now after reviewing our games from last year, but if Cardale can make the improvements, like @MililaniBuckeye has mentioned, Im all for him starting. But at the same time, the same can be said for Braxton in regards to passing as well... This will be a fun discussion for the rest of the year

I'll obviously "trust the coach" with whomever he decides should be out there. I don't think it's JT by a landslide and maybe Cardale does make the accuracy/reads improvements with spring/summer practice with the 1s and more reps early in the season. I have the feeling, though, that it's no more likely that Cardale will turn into JT than JT can develop Cardale's arm. I think teams will be able to better gameplan for Cardale. Yes, I know that there's only so much they can do to stop him physically but the offense is also more limited with him. I also don't think the primary reason EzE took off toward the end of the year was Cardale's arm. The line was working together with the run blocking and he had a lot of momentum. Having a deep threat didn't hurt, of course, but I think we would have seen similar numbers with JT under center. All that said, Cardale is and forever will be heroic. What he did coming off of the bench and running through the playoff will never be repeated.
