2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

Keep in mind with Braxton that he has an insurance policy that only pays out if he can't progress to the next level. He can't just quit football and cash in.

Of all the options he has (transfer, change position, go to the draft, stay at OSU, etc.) one is to come back in the spring and demonstrate that he simply can't do it. While that may be in the back of his or Urban's mind it certainly is not something they can talk openly about.

My view is that Cardale may have the inside track for 2015, but JT will at worst be not far behind. Braxton has little chance for meaningful time behind center IMO, and if Torrance Gibson really wants to play collegiate QB he probably ought to go to Auburn rather than tOSU.

Worst case the #2 job opens up when he is a RS Soph.

Looking at the special NC SI issue, it's crazy looking at the numbers JT put up throughout the season and how the offense looked. The offense had over 700yds against UC, and he led the offense 4 straight 50+pt games and 6 overall with another at 49. And 11 different WRs with receptions against Kent St! This kid can light it up from all over the field. The battle to start is going to be insane. Braxton is such a question mark with that injury, but his legs can add in so many ways, he would be an extraordinary X factor on offense next year.

I believe I had a similar surgery that Braxton had and I can say I doubt he's ever the same. With that said, it's not like he won't ever be able to throw the ball again and I'd think he'll be able to throw the ball well enough for college football. It's just a matter of if he's willing to switch positions now or once in the NFL. I'm pretty sure on more than one occasion we'll see two of these guys throwing meaningful passes in the same game. And if all three stay, I'd put money on seeing all three on the same play.

Oh and I'd pay loads of money to see J.T. running the read option with Cardale as the RB and Zeke as the lead blocker. SOOO much pain!!!

Completely forgot about Boykin, it will take awhile to get used to TCU claiming that they are a good football team.
They'll always be the little sisters of the poor to me.

As far as preseason heisman favs, the only reason not to have zeke #1 is the absurd qb bias the award has picked up the last 20 years.
eta: tsun qb is still the favorite for the september heisman, though zaire from nd might challenge.

I'm partial to JT's ability to distribute and run read option... but when you have a QB who poses such a deep threat that the secondary is practically playing prevent... man that opens some stuff up.

They have Boykin way too high IMO, and DeShaun Watson and Cody Kessler are too low. (Kessler has gotten way too little attention.) And why on earth anyone would place Derrick Henry above EzE is beyond me.
Well their logic is that Henry will be the focal point of their offense replacing the starting QB and the best WR in the country. EzE will/may be overshadowed (or at least share the spotlight with) the QB. If he's referring to in a vacuum though then that would be unwise.

If some of the other guys can replace Devin as the deep threat guy, I could buy Cardale being better than JT in the offense by forcing a safety deep. But until that happens I would put JT ahead of Cardale. Devin was just so good at tracking the ball that Cardale was just able to chuck it up and he would get it. Nobody has shown the ability to do that so far. BUT, we have a lot of young guys who I'm sure are looking to fill that void.

I'd say Michael Thomas showed it as well but he doesn't have quite the burst and is more then just a go deep kind of guy.

There should be no problem finding deep threats. One guy probably won't replicate Devin's amazing TDs and averages... but this team is not lacking speed or players at the skill positions. Not to take anything away from Devin's amazing and under-rated career, but I'm more concerned if they can replace Spencer's mentality with blocking consistency.

These are more along the lines of why I'd prefer JT (bear in mind this is somewhat nitpicky, b/c either QB is clearly effective and can do the job)
- Can Cardale get into manageable situations more often? Skeptical the team can rely on going 3/3 on 4th and convert that many 3rd-and-longs through a whole season.
- Kind of the same point as above, but he tends to go on hot-and-cold streaks. His deep ball is great, but the passing game as a whole is feast-or-famine and that can eventually bite you in the ass. Especially once teams have a good body of film to prep off of. While the WR corps is getting some (deserved) flak for the ints - they also balled out with some of those catches.
- Read options... had to take that aspect away from him against Oregon and just ride Eze and the OLine with that unbalanced counter. Teams in conference will figure that out and scheme for it. The obvious constraint is to give the QB a read - to either throw a screen out to the eligible split-end or run the sweep to the pivot. This offense relies on QB reads. It's one thing to beat Oregon into submission, but can't go through a 12 game season without using reads or having the QB check out of the play presnap. We'll probably face 3 or 4 defenses better than Oregon in conference.

This is all stuff I expect the staff will work on through Spring. He'll get plenty of chances to work on the read portion, especially since he and Collier will be the only QBs able to run those plays in Spring.

I'm hoping they find a way to utilize all 3 QBs, because they're all excellent and yet very different. It would have to be a nightmare for a DC to prepare for JT and Cardale taking snaps with Brax as wildcat/pivot, and don't forget the WR corps, or the RB stable led by Eze.

Keep in mind the situation he was thrust into and the caliber of opponents he was facing. By the time we get into conference play, I'd say he'll more significantly more proficient on first and second downs. And after what he did against Wisconsin, Alabama, and Oregon, playing at VT will be a walk in the park pressure-wise.

I don't see him having any real streaks. He threw a fair amount of balls away--smartly. He was also facing some fairly good pass pressure against Alabama, and early against Oregon.

This will get fixed simply with more practice now that he's the first-stringer up until fall camp.
