2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

I wouldn't mind us erring back on that side. I don't read game threads anymore because of some of the idiotic comments I've seen made in them about the players.
Some of those are at least heat of the moment, but it should definitely be walked back a bit at other times. If your point is "Cardale isn't playing well, JT should start" it is not really enhanced by saying "ZOMG Cardale sucks giraffe nipple" or any such thing.

There's also, in my opinion, a huge difference between saying "Cardale sucks" and "Cardale's performance sucked".

I really really disagree with this, and have as soon as people were joyous about Cardale's deep ball last year. Oregon always cushions their DB's. You can watch all their games last year and see how deep their safeties were and how far off the receiver the Corners were. And Alabama actually played up tight with theirs.

Alabama did play up, but they also shaded their safety over Devin and surrendered the deep middle in their cover 2 looks. That's what we were exploiting on third and long with the slot early in the game. Later they got tired of that and went to more press man, that allowed Devin to get on top for his long TD and Cardale to pick up several 3rd downs with his legs while the secondary was chasing receivers.

Yes. But there are ways to say it. The senior board members have gone over this before. There is a big difference between saying"Cardale still can't read 2 deep coverages, as indicated by that bad INT" and saying "this game shows Cardale still can't read defense for shit". Its about conext

He's clearly regressed. No arguing that, he missed some wide ass open receivers.

I was just noting the irony of the situation.

Playing devils advocate, maybe this pass D would spark the confidence. Who knows?

It's not like the kid isn't capable. He just hasn't gotten it done for some reason this year.
Agreed. I still think subpar coaching is the main culprit here. You can't tell me the man who lit up those defenses last year is a bad QB. To do it in one high pressure game can be considered a fluke. But THREE straight games? And not only three straight games, but arguably the three most important games in Ohio State history up to this point. I definitely don't think you can blame it on not having Devin Smith. Smith only caught two balls for 87 yards in the Sugar Bowl and one ball in the NC for 45 yards. Cardale was very good about spreading the ball around in those games. He lit up a pretty good VaTech team this year as well.

That said you have to go with Cardale because it was very clear last Saturday that his confidence is shot and JT is the way to go. Very excited to see the result this Saturday.

I agree, context and wording can make a huge difference when there's no tone or non-verbal cues to pick up on.

Giraffe's, they don't kick or bite or anything like that?

Asking for a friend.

Perhaps it is being soft, but we have always been very delicate in word choice around here when criticizing Buckeyes. In my IMO, the criticism wasn't unfair and I think everyone he agrees his play could be a lot better -- definitely the terminology more than the sentiment that is the problem.

(Fake Buckeyes don't count, you fork-tongued, frosty-tipped, douchecanoe so just go ahead and stay down there in Tennessee, okay?)

I'm aware of the rules bud, I've been a member for 7 years. I just don't think there's a difference between saying a performance sucked or saying it was very, very poor. I'm just being honest, no malicious intent.

For the record, I never said Jones sucked, just his play at times.

Edit: I'm done talking about it. Further discussions can be done in a PM

Regardless, what was initially said regarding Cardale in this instance sure as hell wasn't worth a repetitive yet somehow escalating twenty-post barrage of sand in vaginitis . . .

They aren't children playing little league for their first year. They're grown men on full rides at a top flight academic institution, being given a chance to earn more their first year in the pros than most of us earn in our lifetime. I really don't see why we have to pussyfoot around. Now death threats to a punter, that is probably going overboard. Saying a guy sucks is really a distilled, simplistic, generalized way of saying we've had plenty of data and he simply doesn't appear competent as a passer, runner, or leader to deliver another national championship. Sure, a lot of other things play in to that: coaching, line play, etc., etc.

It's all relative. If someone is on a scholarship for football they aren't shitty in the population of all football players at universities. But this is an opinion-based observation by non-professional observers. It's like my toddler's artwork. I think it's great. But someone without kids would say it's a pile of shit compared to Van Gogh. Someone with kids might say "that's nice (but not as good as my kid)." I have no problem with someone saying someone sucks. I know what they mean and I'm not simple enough to think they actually perceive the player to be trash/think they could far outperform them.

This season borders on the emotional taxation I felt under Tressel.

My phone blew up at 1:44 PM today. "Urbz just announced JT as starter!", "Our long nightmare is over.", "Free at last! Free at last!" were some of the lines.

I hope I haven't been disrespectful to Cardale. We (Buckeye Nation) all owe that guy a ton. He brought us a B1G championship, got us into the CFBP, and won us a national championship. None of that happens without him performing the way he did. But that was 2014, and while what he did should never be underappreciated, the Bucks have a 2015 season to try to achieve the same things.

I won't speak for others who were in the JT camp from the beginning, but I was about to lose my mind watching that offense from Hawaii through Indiana. I was frustrated and even a little angry. That offense wasn't bad (like Nebraska 2011 bad), but it wasn't as efficient and productive as it was 1 year ago, or as the players' experience and talent on paper indicated it should be - and the killer was that we had a guy not playing (much) who had demonstrated over 11+ games that he was the most efficient and productive QB in OSU HISTORY! If that guy wasn't over there available, we would have all been on the Cardale bandwagon - and I believe he has it in him to get better and lead this team. But to keep going to a guy who is struggling to do it while not using a guy who I had full confidence in that he could do it, well, it was driving me nuts.

I love the way JT carries himself. I love the way he plays the position - his toughness, confidence, leadership, decision-making, intellect, discipline, calmness, and I could go on but it would get nauseating. My love for JT does not mean I do not love Cardale. I do. But we have 2 guys, only one position, and if Cardale had this offense getting 40 first downs a game and scoring 60 points, well, I would be insisting he play. But JT's talents and character are, to use an Urban word, "elite". It doesn't mean that Cardale doesn't have many positive traits about him as well, but the other guy just has "it" - whatever that is. All I know is I recognize it when I see "it". And JT eats and poops "it", sweats "it", and is covered with "it". And his "it" seems to rub off on his teammates. That's why this is so important to so many people.

Jones had Devin Smith to bail him out on several long TD catches that were underthrown in the B1G CCG...he had a pretty decent game against Bama and a good game against Oregon. The thing is, he was essentially playing with house money in all three games, in that no one really expected him to come through as he did. As for the VT game, 10-19-1, 2 TDs, and 187 yards is pretty decent but not exactly "lighting up" VT. Cardale did struggle against Hawaii and Northern Illinois, but also his lack of mobility overall essentially took the read option away from us and allowed defense to stack the box. Few folks appreciate Cardale more than I, and I've been one of his biggest supporters since before the season started, but he just has not captured the magic he had during last year's post-season run. I believe having JT run the offense for most of the game, with bringing in Cardale occasionally, is the best option.
