2014 TSUN Football News

I think you're right about Walsh.... went to Stanford, if I'm not mistaken... or... maybe SDSU?
Went to Stanford. It was a few years after he retired from the NFL, and I think he just got the itch to coach again. Not remotely similar to Harbaugh.

As for Harbaugh, unless the Niners absolutely tank this season, I don't see them forcing him out. I think he's there at least through 2015. After that, who knows. The NFL has had messy divorces between successful coaches and franchises before, so he could leave. But, if he does, somebody in the NFL will back up the Brink's truck for him, and I don't see scUM being able to match up with that.

I've heard it said that Harbaugh and the 49ers administration don't always see eye to eye, but if they keep having success I'm sure they'll be just fine with one another. Like others have said, even if the 49ers happen to tank and Harbaugh is ousted it's more likely that he'll get another shot somewhere else before he falls back to the college ranks. Hell, coaches have done worse and gotten 2nd chances.

Pete Carroll?
Carroll had two mediocre stops in the NFL, and was out of work with no NFL prospects when USC hired him. In fact, he was considered so mediocre, that USC was laughed at for hiring him.

Bobby Ross had a Super Bowl appearance with the Chargers and a record above .500 in the NFL, then resurfaced for a couple years at Army.
Bobby Ross was 27-30 in Detroit and resigned midseason of his 4th year at age 65. His NFL days were done.

There really are no pecidents that I can think of where a highly successful NFL coach left the NFL to go back to college when he still had NFL options in the prime of his career. It just doesn't happen. The guys that go back are typically the guys that wanted a shot at the NFL, then failed. The NFL isn't for everybody, just as college isn't for everybody. I think Harbaugh's an NFL guy...more money, usually less pressure than at a major CFB job, and maybe most importantly--no recruiting.

Never said that there were a number of good examples. As previously cited, Bill Walsh is probably the best example.

Other examples are Forrest Gregg (went back to SMU when they restarted their program a couple years after coaching the Bengals in the Super Bowl).

George Allen's one year coaching Long Beach State doesn't really count (it was in 1990, 6 years after his last pro coaching job in the USFL)

Jack Pardee took the Bears to the playoffs in the late 1970s, then coached the Redskins before coaching the University of Houston (during the Andre Ware years). Pardee then returned to the NFL with the Oilers.

Outraged Michigan fan calls from 'enemy territory' to rip team in hysterical radio rant

Paul from Toledo would like to see Devin Gardner on the defensive line among other things.

"Yeah, this is Paul. [Inaudible] I'm headed back home. I just gotta tell you right now: That is absolutely a joke. I heard one of your sponsors: [Inaudible] burritos. Brady Hoke can grab some burritos and get the heck out of town. You got to be kidding me.
I mean, here's the deal: Devin Gardner's got a defensive lineman number (No. 98), get him on the defensive line! Let's get a quarterback in there that knows how to throw and throw to our team!
Let's get (basketball head coach) John Beilein coaching both teams, Crisler Arena and the Big House are right next to each other. Let's get John Beilein, Jon Horford - let's get all those guys - Mitch McGary; I don't care how many trees he smokes, he can score touchdowns, then get him on the field!
The Maize and Blue need to [inaudible] in a big way. You know what I'm talking about, Ira! This is a joke! I'm in Toledo, Ohio, enemy territory, we need some Ws!
What is Michigan about? Engineering? Forget engineering! Let's win football!!!!"
