2014 tOSU Wide Receiver Discussion

CLOWNS, FOOLS AND DIVAS? SURE; BUT IN THE END, OHIO STATE'S WIDE RECEIVERS ARE BROTHERS
By Patrick Maks on October 22, 2014 at 8:35a Follow #@maksimuspatrick

If you were to become a fly on the wall inside Ohio State’s wide receivers room, you’d see a collage of different personalities.

“We’re all fools to our own extent,” Evan Spencer said.

“We definitely have divas,” Jalin Marshall said, laughing.

That’s the cliche, after all.

“I guess it’s part of the position,” Spencer said.

“That comes from being a wide receiver,” Marshall said.

Cont'd ...

Loved seeing Corey Smith play well when the ball was thrown his way. One play in particular he looked like a total stud making moves once he had the ball. And don't think that LEGAL block will do anything but help him with respect among the coaches. I have been waiting for him to step up all season. Would be absolutely huge to have him ball out against Bama.

I don't know if Bama has seen a better array of receivers this year with Smith, Thomas, Spencer, DeSoto, Marshall and Smith. Auburn burned them deep a number of times. We should hopefully do the same.
Honestly our WRs will be the deepest recieveing corps Bama has faced. Auburn had 2 great recievers that attacked the ball in the air (Coates and Williams). Bama has been susceptable to the deep ball because they are matched up in man coverage. Hopefully Dontre can get back to full strength for the game but I dont see one reciever being a huge difference against them. It will come down to if they attack the ball in the air like SMith did against Wisconsin. That is my only complaint about the recievers at all.

Noticed Mike Thomas had Zone 6 pride stickers along with the Buckeye leaves. Interesting.

Any concern that Clark, Dixon, Campbell and McLaurin were all in sweats for this game? I don't want to be an alarmist but we've seen injuries take a toll on players before.

This is a group that I, and maybe Meyer agrees, still isn't up to elite levels.

A huge task and opportunity to transform that perception now. They have added pressure to be sharp and make plays for the offense. We know Devin Smith can run a fly route, can he do more and can he make the reliable play to keep the offense moving? Who's going to be the steady Dane Sanzenbacher or Philly Brown to get in the passing windows across the middle and make a first down catch?

Really hoping some stars emerge.
Damn.

Answered dat! What an impressive transformation from before the year and even earlier in the year. Quite simply- guys made plays. They became playmakers. And they caught the ball.

I saw more guys "go up and get it" in the last 3 games, than I had the last 3 years. Now a huge task is what can they put together in 2015?

Likely more to do with all being true freshman that are being redshirted (sans Clark)...no need to suit up with the depth ahead of them. As far as I know, the only one hurt from that group all year was Dixon (maybe Clark? seem to think he was at some point). In any event, all should be healed up by spring I believe and it will be interesting to see who from that group emerges. McLaurin was supposedly turning it on late in the season and obviously Dixon was looking like he would be an instant impact before the injury. But Clark is nearing what may be a make-or-break situation this season after so much excitement when he was coming in. Campbell is a big wildcard...I'm not even sure if he is 18 yet but with him it is all about body development and maturation.

Anyways, the competition should be very stiff for playing time.

Agreed on all. McLaurin and Dixon stepping up to replace Spencer and Smith will be interesting to watch, as both are super talented and fit well into our scheme. I'm still wondering if Campbell is a WR or RB. And Noah Brown can be put in this group too as a guy to watch. There's a lot of young talent on this team going into next year. I'm hoping all buy into Urban's work ethic and stay hungry though its a different view now from the top. Now their expected to perform, the last few years we were just happy if they did

James Clark has been injured, not sure what from, but he's in serious danger of being passed up quickly by the young pups.

Clark is back on crutches, happened sometime after the Wisconsin game. Campbell had his shoulder surgery around Wisconsin and McLaurin must've been hurt during Bowl run-up, not sure with what ailment. If healthy, the redshirts dress. See: Collier, Slade, Hubbard, Meech, Hooker all in pads.

Campbell didn't have on a sling, so that's encouraging with regards to his injury, at least.

All these young 'uns can catch the ball. What will put them in the elevated category of the two Devins is the ability to downfield block, carry out their routes, adapt to broken plays, and generally do the little things that don't make the stat sheets. Loved hearing the announcers dissect the play (Zeke's big runs), where Smith (or Spencer?) came in to seal off the OLB to open the running lane. Beautiful. The outlook is bright indeed. Go Bucks
