2014 tOSU Wide Receiver Discussion

Nobody is on the ledge, just pointing out the lack of production in the group.
So what was the reasons for our receivers the past seasons if this is due to a young OLine and young QB? Out of all D-1A wideouts, Philly came in at #100, Devin Smith at #138 in 2013. In 2012, Philly Brown ranked #119, and Devin Smith #146.

They are young and green? Who? They are all experienced players.

Devin Smith is a Senior that played in all games last year, played in all games in 2012, played in 2011.
Evan Spence is a Senior that played in all 14 games last year, played in 2012, and played in 10 games in 2011.
Corey Smith is a Junior that played as a JUCO

The only player that is truly green the way you try to depict them as is Michael Thomas having only played in 2012.

By this post, you are on that ledge.

BTW just because you were a JUCO doesn't mean you are experienced at the D-1 level. It was his first big game in the Shoe. there will hopefully come a time when he'll overcome the nerves or whatever that was bothering him in the game, but it's clear something was going on in between the ears. The physical abilities are there.

so you agree this is an experienced receiving corps? And apparently Smith had enough shine in all of his experience as a Freshman and Sophomore to warrant a full scholarship.

No, I don't agree with that and I don't see how you could come anywhere close to that conclusion from what I wrote.

I find the whole "he's a junior, therefore he's experienced" argument to be ultimately self-defeating. Who are we to know what he faced as a JUCO? Obviously the coaches thought he had the talent to play at Ohio State. But talent alone can't carry you, experience and having been in the situation is what makes plays in tough games. It's clear that was lacking on Saturday and I really don't understand how anyone can argue that outside of Devin and Evan.

So how about this - how about we all shut up about who would be doing what, trust the coaches to do their jobs and just enjoy the fun? After all, outside of Grad and a few others, none of us are anywhere near qualified to make substantive judgements about the players themselves.

Thomas is the same position(SE) as Devin Smith so that makes it harder to get both Devin and Thomas on the field at the same time. Move one so you can get both out there at once. They are our best options right now. They should be getting most of the game touches.
Get Thomas the damn ball!

Personally I love what Smith brings to the team honestly. Everyone should have a role on offense and Devin's is he can stretch the field. However, having a receiver were we designate as a uber blocker is not ok (spence).

Give me someone that blocks well enough but makes plays over someone who blocks great but can't.

if...

isn't the coaches job to get the kids ready and to put them in a position where they CAN execute?
the deep ball is NOT a high percentage play. why do you think VT was so happy to 'give' it to us?
if that's your only option, then you. got. out. coached. badly.
Don't be ridiculous. If the ball hits the receiver in the hands, it's on the WR to catch it. That happened enough times to cause a major shift in the game.

There's no looking blindly on my part. If receivers drop balls right in their hands, no game planning will offset that. Go back to playing TechmoBowl...

Lol your comments are way off base. We were 9 receptions away from having an average completion percentage. The receivers didn't drop 9 balls. If you go back and watch games there's probably an average of 2 drops a game , yes some are bigger than others but point being we didn't put our QB, OL and WR's in a scheme to achieve with their level of maturation to this point. You act like they dropped 10 passes. We had one on one match ups all over the field all you have to do is play pitch and catch and they make a DB miss a tackle and they're gone.

So offensive scheme was the cause of Barrett skeet-shooting that pick-six near the end? Offensive scheme was the cause of the DEs and LBs enjoying a casual dinner nearly the entire second half in our backfield? Update your TechoBowl yet?

How are you even a staff member, you act like you're 3. The fact was we knew they were going to be in our backfield all game yet we did nothing to offset it. I'm not going to sit here and continually dissect the game for you when you point at single plays instead of the whole picture. So enjoy your video game talk while I work a real job.
