2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

I just feel like as much as I love the D-line, they seem to be as responsible for the bad plays as they are for the good ones.

Our linebackers need to be good enough to make plays when the d-line gets that push. Can't blame the d-line for that.

A lot of people on here seem to defend Fickell to the death, and I know by bringing up his name I'll get chastised, but I still don't see linebackers getting off blocks. Sure, there's been some improvement, but we've been getting gashed by the run against teams that don't even have a passing game to keep us off balance.

So apparently against Michigan our defense wasn't lining up properly for their formations and personnel groupings in the first half. We regularly had 6 guys in the box against 6-7 blockers, so they could run the football at will. That was corrected at half time and their run game was stonewalled going forward.

Not to be that guy, but it takes a half to realize that?

Yeah no shit... I have noticed this just not the first half but in many cases against the last few opponents. We seem to be lining up very oddly against the teams formations with our D-ends inside the tackles or Tight ends (which results in losing leverage big time) and then having a wider than normal split for Lee, with our Safeties 12 yards offs.

Go back and check it out but on all of Coleman's big runs look at how much room there is in our front 7. The spacing and especially the amount of bodies in the box was very alarming to me and I must admit we did turn it around in the 2nd half against scum. I would've liked to have seen us finish strong last week and not give up that late TD but that's been our MO this year... Once the game is in hand we simply abandon our style or tight coverage and give them 10 yard cushions like it's 2013's defense. I never get why defensive coordinators change the way the defense operates when the game is in hand? I get the premise but it always ends up badly for the defense. Just stick with what you do and step on the throat.

Matta: "We're going to make a big adjustment in the 2nd half. We're actually going to run our offense." :slappy:

Not only that but of late against a 3 man bunch we keep lining up with either 2 men within 5 yards and a safety 15 yards over the top or worse one man up and one man 7 yards deep and to the inside. That drives me crazy when I see it ecuase you know the most common play out of that is WR screen,

Big quote, but what does this exactly mean? That Tressel paid more attention to defense and Urban pays more to offense?

It means that Tressel defenses weren't late getting to eight. It's one thing to show base D, but you HAVE to get to eight in the box by the time the QB-RB exchange happens, or Gordon will kill you. They showed it on BTN. The Huskers were consistently late getting that eighth man into the box, and we all saw the results.

Contrast that film with the WIU film, where Western Illinois lined up eight guys at the LOS, with all the gaps already filled. Gordon had 25 carries for 408 yards against a light box. He had 17 carries for 38 yards against a stacked box.

LOAD THE BOX. Make Stave beat you. Don't LET Gordon beat you.

Ask yourself this question - would we beat Oregon on a neutral field? I don't care how we may or may not win, but can we win? Are we truly a better overall team? We'll only know if the game is played, but I struggle to be confident in that result. That game may be played this season, and I hope it is. But take all the bias away from the home team and break it down. I think we can play with almost anyone, and we're a really good team, but our defense is still a considerable weakness that is harder and harder to defend (other than "defenses just don't play like they used to..."). We need to be much better.

When we played the Ducks in the Rose Bowl a few years back, we had a much stronger, more physical defense. That played a big factor in that game. Oregon's offensive style isn't much different now, arguably a little faster. I just don't see us controlling that game. Hope I'm wrong.

When we played Oregon in the Rose Bowl, we had the ball for a record 42 minutes and ran a record 91 plays. The defense didn't stop them. The offense never let them in the field.

Just sayin'.

Form tackling in space and physicality. Gotta have it, we don't do well. Our offense would score on the Ducks, I never questioned that. I think it would be a good game overall, I'm simply stating my opinion that I think our defense could be too much of a liability in that game.

For comparisons sake, in the 2010 Rose Bowl, OSU held Oregon to 260 yards of total offense - 80 Yds passing/180 Yds rushing. Their offenses is more explosive today, but that was a chip kelly coached team with athletes such as Jeremiah Masoli and LeMichael James. Do you think we could do that today? Be honest......

260 yards in 18 minutes, and no.

Walk everyone up. I have absolutely ZERO fear of any Wisky WRs this year. Abrederris was a playmaker and I believe they still had Nick Toon also? At least one other guy who could go get it. That put pressure in the back. If we play the exact defense this game as we did last year, we'll win comfortably if the offense does their job. You cannot let a team use their strength against you at will. Take it away and live with the results. If Stave goes ballistic, make adjustments in the right amount of time but realistically, if Stave goes ballistic we are done for.

I want to see guys play straight up tomorrow night on the Dline. I watch us run stunts a lot of times and our guys run into each other effectively taking both of them out of the play. Shoot the vacated gaps by the pulling Olineman in this game and make tackles at the LB level and we should be ok. Walk the safeties up, especially opposite the TE side and dare them to go over the top. If we come out in a soft zone in coverage and in the box tomorrow, I'm going to go nuts.
