2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

I actually really like our 3rd and long packages where we have 3 linemen (bosa, diesel, hubbard) 3 LBs (kwon, perry, lee) and 5 DBs (reeves extra) where reeves is playing as a 3rd safety in the middle of powell and bell. That's a lot of athletes on the field who can all do multiple things (blitz, zone blitz, drop into coverage). That's actually the formation when we got the pick-6 against Bama.

Certainly can mix that in...certainly gives us some creative blitz packages without losing speed or size. I just think having two more rush presences at DE in Holmes and Hubbard gives us the ability to utilize Bosa inside more frequently. Before, Frazier and Miller were not guys able to do that. Hell, you could even drop into a 3-3-5 with Bosa, Diesel, and Holmes as the base DL, with only Lee and Kwon at LB, and the DBs you listed...that gives Hubbard the ability to drop back as a LB (he definitely can play there comfortably) or put his hand in the dirt to give the 4-2-5 look, much like Carpenter did (btw, that is who I truly think Hubbard reminds me of...leaner but more athletic and can play the same role).

The 2015 defense should be fun to watch (as was the 2014 D as they progressed into an elite unit). Not only do we have top-notch athletes and plenty of experience returning, but there is so much versatility. Throw in the fact that our entire defensive staff is returning and they will be able to implement some creative wrinkles to give an offense fits. And for anyone that follows recruiting, if we throw Gustin into that mix of versatile defenders, it would be even more fun.

I know you all will think I'm crazy but this is why I don't mind the off season (it gets long in the summer though) and why I never wish away time when we await a big game. It's because its fun to think of the possibilities.

That said I feel next years team will have a few things to work out but overall I expect next years team to be more consistent and a overall better unit. I for one count Kwon' as a returning starter with how much he played last year and I watched him a good bit against Oregon and I must say that dude is big and can flat out FLY. So obviously I count him as a improvement over Curtis, I think our DE opposite Bosa will be better as well as Deeper, and I think our corner opposite of Apple can be a good replacement as well.

We won't be as explosive at the DT spot obviously, but our biggest blow IMO is grant's experience at CB. I think Webb takes the job opposite Apple and I think he can do what Eli did this year and that is be someone solid to start and be a bright spot by years end. I think overall we will be deeper, more explosive, a better pass rushing team, and all of this with another year in our system. Damn it's scary how much talent we have sitting on the benches and that's not including the guys actually on the field.

Starters are great, but a lot of unproven backups that will need reps. No clue who will produce after McMillan, Perry and Lee

I'm not too worried about depth to be honest. Worley played pretty well in spelling Lee occasionally and hopefully Trey can get healthy. Cam Williams I would rather see on special teams only...great, hard-working kid but he is a liability on defense.

But beyond those guys, Booker got a little bit of PT and looks like he has a bright future. Really hoping Berger rehabs well because he could be huge. Then the recruiting class coming in could have some instant-impact guys. Hilliard and Connor are both guys that I think could play immediately (big, smart, and athletic)...I really think Connor will be Kwon's backup this season. Plus if Gustin commits, he could certainly start off at LB and play some there. In sum, there are some question marks but I think there will definitely be 2-3 guys that step up and become good-great LBs.

Theres a lot of talent among all of the DBs. Idk if I can agree with the writer saying Conley should start opposite Apple, I felt he was a weak link at times. But the off season could provide progress for him. I see Webb and Lattimore pushing for a starting spot and Reeves staying in the slot. The wildcard is Cam Burrows, he has a lot of talent and it'd be great to see him find a spot on the defense
