2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

Unreal effort by this unit. As much as I am going to miss guys like Bennett, the Grants, and Miller/Frazier, the future is only looking brighter here. The veterans coaching the youth was a treat to watch. So much fun to see Curtis Grant genuinely excited to see Raekwon McMillan make a big play and vice-versa. Talk about someone paying it forward for this program. Efforts like that translate into a new generation of greatness and really make me admire someone like Curtis Grant in a whole new light.

To wit, I was thinking "Huh, we'll miss X player at DE next year"...then I see a jacked Sam Hubbard celebrating after the game. This is just the resurfacing of the Silver Bullets. But damn was it fun to see them resurface.

Hubbard, Holmes, Kwon and Webb should step up and fill in nicely. The only question mark for me is who is going to play alongside Washington on the DL? My guess is Munger, but time will tell.

I think Schutt will be the starter next to Washington. Diesel will thrive as a 3 tech and Schutt is a pure 1-tech. Schutt catches so much flack for not making big plays but that is not his role...he consistently blows up gaps and eats space, which allows the other 10 to make the play. We will especially need him against the likes of Wisconsin, Penn State, Minnesota, etc. But I do think at least one of Munger or Hill steps up big time to get substantial minutes. To be honest, they are going to have to. Agreed on the above though...Kwon will likely be an improvement at MIKE, Holmes and Hubbard will be an improvement rushing the passer (hopefully they are good against the run too, I think at least Holmes is), and either Webb or Lattimore could step up big...but the other corner spot I would think Reeves and Conley are the frontrunners to start the spring. Still, at least one of Webb or Lattimore will likely get plenty of PT and both may be Nickel candidates.

Another thought on 3rd downs though...Holmes and Hubbard on the ends, Bosa and Diesel inside. That would be a deadly rush and really you don't give up much size.

I actually really like our 3rd and long packages where we have 3 linemen (bosa, diesel, hubbard) 3 LBs (kwon, perry, lee) and 5 DBs (reeves extra) where reeves is playing as a 3rd safety in the middle of powell and bell. That's a lot of athletes on the field who can all do multiple things (blitz, zone blitz, drop into coverage). That's actually the formation when we got the pick-6 against Bama.
