2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

This D against the run is just not good, if we hold Gordon to under 150 (1st, I would be shocked), and that likely means the other dude (Clement, has about 170). And Stave is good enough to pass sucessfully when needed. Sadly, I see a 20+ point loss without JT.

We should just forfiet right? I mean a 20 point loss? Get that shit out of here..

I was fearing this game but for whatever reason even with losing JT I'm rather calm about it. Here's why I think that is...

After that MSU win we just haven't had the same energy as we had before that win. Now here we are where we lost to MSU last year faced again with a tremendous opportunity if we win. We saw what happened when we played MSU this year and now we are playing in the game where we lost to them. We will have all the motivation we need to get the job done (against a top ranked defense no less).

Wisconsin doesn't have the vertical threat they did last year and because of that I expect to finally see a defense that will stack the box and give the front 7 the help it truly needed the last few weeks.

Another reason and I hope no one takes this the wrong way because everyone should know I prefer JT over anyone next year. In saying that though after the MSU win he has been doing more with his feet than with his arm and its been because for whatever reason he hasn't been as sharp. Missing tons of wide open guys, throwing picks, he has been taking off much faster in the pocket, and we have been living off the touch pass more so then ever the last three weeks due to not being as sharp down the field.

Now don't get me wrong Cardale is not JT. He wouldn't have done to MSU what JT did buthe can do what JT has been doing the last 3 weeks IMO. Meaning he can run the ball, scramble for big yards, throw touch passes, and go playaction deep where IMO at that point its less about the throw as it is about the WR thrown to.

Does JT hurt? Yes. Is the defense facing a big test? Yes. Can we win? You better believe it

Coaches have got to coach the team up this week on both side of the ball. Both scheme and execution are going to be vital. Limiting the run is going to be the challenge on D. We need our best run D out there and we have to tackle. Missed tackles will be our downfall. Stop the run = Victory.

On Offense I think Wisky stacks the box and makes Jones beat them. If he is on his game and our guys can get separation, we might get some quick scores and it will also eventually open up the run game. But Wisky is going to blitz all night long. We have to burn them in the pass game.

GO BUCKS!

It's just concerning because they haven't been effective offensively all season, against anyone....except us. But in fairness, Gardner always somehow becomes accurate when facing the Buckeyes.
It's still a far cry from last year when Michigan offense was just as inept and they put up 600 yards and 41 points. It was still a little disconcerting to see them move the ball but, well, fuck Michigan.

While I understand people's concern, I think we're being way too harsh on run defense here. The past four weeks we've faced 3 legitimate Top 25 run offenses. Indiana has a Top 10 run offense and has run on every single team they've faced this year. They put up over 200 yards on the ground against a Top 5 Sparty run defense. Minnesota just got through running for almost 200 yards against a Top 10 Wisconsin run defense. This isn't like last year when horrible pass offenses like Joel Stave led Wisconsin and Connor Cook led Michigan State were throwing for 300 yards. Our defense is exactly what we wanted at the beginning of the year: Average. It's still the first year of a new system people.

Shit Kirby Smart and the Bama defense just got through giving up over 600 yards and 44 points to Auburn. You want to fire him too?

2013 - Melvin Gordon 15 carries for 74 yards. He was averaging way higher than that last year.

Was at that game, and they held him in check - which was even more impressive because they also had White back there. Stave to Aberdaris was the bigger problem.

With JT down, the Bucks need the whole team to step up their game, but the defense in particular. They haven't played a really good and complete game since Sparty. Saturday would be a good time to do it.

Which they don't have this year. IMO replicate that game play and we are fine on defense because again they have NO ONE out wide that can keep us honest. Only way they're giving us issues down field is if we have a breakdown.

Sometimes, I think the problem is that the defensive line is TOO good. There seem to be so many plays where they get so much pressure, so fast, that it opens holes it shouldn't and allows major gains. I also think they tend to blitz the LBs up the middle too much. I realize the line is good and you want to take advantage of that by shooting gaps created by Bennett, etc., but more often than not it seems to allow guys to run the edge and get big gains. Seems to me it would make more sense to just bring the four linemen a little closer together and trust them to hold up the middle as best possible.

I don't go back and watch a lot of film, but it seems to me they give up a lot of substantial runs on plays where the DEs are lined up wide. It could just be Bosa rushing outside when he's supposed to rush inside, but who knows.

I just feel like as much as I love the D-line, they seem to be as responsible for the bad plays as they are for the good ones.

Opposing offenses also seem to be able to recognize that aggressiveness and "steer" the lineman away from the play, allowing the defender's momentum to do most of the work. I noticed it a number of times against Sparty and Minnesota where Bennett would get great penetration, but the RB was able to easily maneuver around it because the playcall was counting on him doing that.
