2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

Thought you guys might like to see this, which I thought this was interesting. It is a 2 dimensional map of schedule strength and team strength (http://www.oscarcollegefootball.com/OSCAR_College_Football/OSCAR.html power rating). The map is updated daily and more extensive information is available in an app, which I have not purchased.

Ohio State is located on the map at about the same place as Michigan State and Notre Dame. Wisconsin is with BYU, below Ohio State. Nebraska is to the right of Ohio State.

Concerning Ohio State's SOS, Virginia Tech is in the top quartile, middle. Maryland is below them. Navy is middle of the map, 1/3 up from the bottom. Cincy is next to them. Kent is at the bottom middle. Among elite teams, Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame have the weakest strength of schedule.

These results are consistent with the other predictive computer rankings (as opposed to BCS algorithms that remove or discount margin of victory). Ohio State has been on a rapid trajectory upward and to the right, which suggests to me that they potentially can run the table.

I think we're a legitimate top-15 team right now. But, given how many teams much higher up than us lost, I'll be surprised if either of the polls reflect that right now.

I've been beating this drum for years, so it's a dead horse at this point, but preseason polls are useless. No team can be anywhere close to objectively ranked in September when most of them are whooping on the dregs of CFB. First ranking shouldn't even be considered until the first week of October at the earliest.

Just went and looked at the AP and USA Today polls for last week. I can see us moving up to at least 15, maybe 14 in those polls. The teams we should jump in either 1 or both polls - Stanford, LSU, USC, Wisconsin (2 losses), and BYU, Nebraska (1 loss).

I think we're legitimately top five at the moment, though I'll admit to some small amount of bias here ...
Offensively, yes. Against the run? Yes. But, until we can eliminate those big play gaffes that are still plaguing the secondary, I can't call us a top-5, maybe even top-10 team. They're still learning a new scheme, so by the time November rolls around, we very well may be. We'll know a lot more after we play Sparty about the OL. I'd like to see us go a game or two against somebody other than Kent State without giving up a 70+ yard pass play. They're definitely improved overall in the secondary, but the big plays are gonna bite them in the ass again eventually if they don't fix it.

and as we find out every year, once the weather changes in October, some teams completely lose their mojo.
