2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

Not really. The AP poll is meaningless as is the coaches poll. All of the power is in the group of 13.

True. Suppose, however, that Ohio State was one of four 1-loss teams vying for the last two spots (2 unbeatens), and Ohio State is ranked the lowest of the four in every single poll. No way that the star chamber votes us in--Big Ten champ or not. Until this conference unfucks itself, we're in a real danger of being proper fucked at the end of a season.

Maybe. Until it happens it's kind of pointless to argue either way really. But the polls are absolutely and entirely meaningless. name brand has always meant more and will continue to do so since people "in the system" are making the picks now.

Or osu could take care of their own freaking business and stop relying on the conference coat rail riding that is en vogue today.

This became a problem in the mid 00s because osu started losing big games. Had they won some of them, they would have been viewed like usc, fsu or Miami before them.

It remains a problem because they lost their last 3 high profile games. Win those and the conversation is different.

Or win that hypothetical game they lost.

I haven't seen the coaches poll but one half of the top 14 teams in the AP are SEC teams. It's becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. An SEC team pummels an over-rated conference foe and vaults into the top 10 (aTm). Said team that got pummeled (SC) beats a top 10 Georgia team in week 3 and all now all three teams are so good that they're all in the top 14.

Another thing that irks me is that the B1G is constantly being harped on as over-rated all year long (don't misunderstand me here - this year, at least, it's true) yet the SEC seems to get extra credit for beating B1G teams in the bowl season and out of conference. If the B1G sucks so bad why are SEC teams starting out the season ranked so high based upon beating these bad teams? And it's not like they're blowing out these crappy B1G teams in every game either. Double standard.

Even had we won those, one ooc loss--given the respect that our conference record would earn--is enough to bounce us out in favor of a one loss team from any other P5 conference.

The problem is that we, for the time being, only have one key ooc game. If the team that we scheduled a decade earlier (Cal, UW, Miami, VT) happens to suck by the time the game comes around or we lose or (as with this year) both, we have only the strength of our conference to make our case at year's end. We can run the Big Ten in dominant fashion this year, and still get left out in favor of a 1-loss team from any other P5 conference. 11-1 and winning the Big Ten would be taking care of freaking business, and it will still most likely result in Ohio State being the team left coming out of the bathroom with nothing but its dick in its hand. 1-10 against other P5 conferences. Christ, nobody is going to give a Big Ten team any credit for rolling through this dumpster fire of a conference. If Va Tech turns out to be mediocre, it's arguable that an undefeated Ohio State would get left out over a 1-loss SEC! team. Probable? Perhaps not, but it certainly would be part of the discussion complete with a full-fledged espn propaganda blitz to make it happen. And deep down inside, those people in the room would know that it's the easier decision. That the Big Ten will, most likely, accept having no teams in the playoff better than those toothless inbreds down South, whose entire existence is wrapped up in football, will deal with not getting two teams into the playoff.

I hate the conference strength/pride/chest-thumping as much as the next guy. I hate having to root for Michigan to do well. Like it or not, however, it has become part of the game, and the Big Ten had better brighten up to that point and start playing the game or, conversely, reconcile itself to starting each season trying to put its best team into the playoff with one arm tied behind its back.

I've started to come the the conclusion that having one of the conferences flagship teams being left out of a big game (playoffs now, or BCSNC in years past), and it's associated payoff, is exactly what is needed to make the brain trust in Rosemont get off their collective asses and start putting pressure on the rest of the conference to start investing all that BTN money in improving their on-field performance.

Pipe dream, I know...

Best case scenario. Worst case scenario, Delaney fails to stand up to Slive once again while the Presidents just reconcile themselves with endowments, research funding and National Academy of Science members on faculty......and the fact that we don't over sign. Sometimes, I wonder whether the conference is just slowly and quietly taking the Hutchins option without the balls to come out and make the grand statement by doing it all at once.

Even had we won those
baloney. The B1G took it to the sec overall in the 06/07 bowl season but no one cared because the flag bearer got humiliated.

Take care of business and no one cares how average the rest of your league is. Like the acc last year.

which is a complete guess and not something that has happened thus far. It also assumes that the playoff field sticks at 4, which is also unlikely

Osu beat up on a weak schedule in 12 and would have won a title if gene didn't protect a useless bowl.
Osu beat up on another weak schedule last year and would have played for all the marbles had they beaten that disrespected league.
Osu was in prime position for a playoff this year as well.

None of those teams were owed a playoff berth with a loss.
