2014 Offense Discussion

Yes. In the past even when things were running pretty well I always had the sense that other than depending on Miller & Hyde we didn't know from one play to the next whether we'd be successful. There's a lot of confidence in this offense now. The line's giving JT some time and he's making the most of it in the air and on the ground.

And it feels quite refreshing to watch JT in the pocket and see him pick apart defenses using all of his weapons and not just choosing one option and then tucking an running. Osu has 3 WRs with over 20 receptions and 8 overall with 10+ receptions, that's crazy how much JT is spreading the wealth and just simply finding the open man. I've watched other QBs of other teams kind of envious in previous years, wondering why our QB couldn't do the same, and now we have a QB who is every bit as good. And the scary thing is, our Oline is getting better by the game and a RB who's quietly becoming one of the nations best.

And I havent even mentioned that we have One of the most dangerous players in CFB injured and returning in some capacity next year. Feels damn good to be a Buckeye. :urban2:

No what's scary is most of them are freshman or sophomores.

What i love about JT is its more difficult to eliminate or to identify our best players to try and shut them down. It is hard to shut down our offense because if you decide stopping the run or pass is more important we will just take whats there (and in large chunks). Forget keying on a specific player too because that'll end up even worse

Yes, the youth will keep us playing at an elite level. We could field a track team with our bench players alone who have yet to see the field, guys like Johnnie Dixon, Terry McLaurin, Parris Campbell have several more years to get acclimated to the offense and grow with JT.

I think a major thing missing in our offense lately is mis-direction. The speed element is there but we are running it right at people like some people have said. Pursuing defenses like MSU can get caught with misdirection and counter plays if we stay disciplined. The speed we can put on the field is something that I don't think another team in the country can match except for maybe Auburn. I'd love to see Herman go ballistic with the playcalling this week and really emphasize that advantage.

Thank you for reading BuckeyePlanet Tom Herman!

I've been critical, not totally sold on the goal line offense still but it worked Saturday night and what the hell do I know. I came here to give the devil his due, the opening script worked well, and then as MSU adjusted and then we adjusted, obviously Mr. Herman won the battle. Very cool to see.

Buckeyes have 18 plays of 80+ yards in their history, four of them have come this season:

Devin Smith 80-yard reception vs Navy
JT Barrett 86-yard rush vs Minnesota
Ezekiel Elliott 81-yard rush vs Wisconsin
Ezekiel Elliott 85-yard rush vs Alabama
This team is built on explosive plays.

Think Orygun can stop explosive plays from athletes of this caliber?

I don't.

Buckeye offense has 11 TDs of 50+ yards this season, plus another 5 of 40-49 yards. That's pretty explosive:

Here's the entire list:

Navy: Devin Smith 80-yard reception
Virginia Tech: Michael Thomas 53-yard reception
Kent State: Michael Thomas 63-yard reception; Devin Smith 50-yard reception
Michigan State: Michael Thomas 79-yard reception; Devin Smith 44-yard reception
Minnesota: JT Barrett 86-yard run; Jalin Marshall 57-yard reception
Indiana: Ezekiel Elliott 65-yard run; Jalin Marshall 54-yard reception
Michigan: Ezekiel Elliott 44-yard run
Wisconsin: Ezekiel Elliott 81-yard run; Devin Smith 42-yard reception; 44-yard reception
Alabama: Ezekiel Elliott 85-yard run; Devin Smith 44-yard reception

As the days go by, I'm feeling more confident about this matchup from an offensive standpoint. I stumbled across this article about the Ducks defense, and it's from October. They mentioned beating a Cal team and dropping almost 60pts on them, yet they surrendered 41 and 560yds! This is to a Cal team that didn't even get bowl eligible(and in the CFB climate, nearly every team makes some type of bowl game). Against FSU, though they blew them out, they still allowed Jameis Winston to have almost 350yds and Cook and Williams ran for 183yds combined on less than 30car! Both FSU RBs had slightly under 7yds/car! EzE has to like his chances, as does Cardale. And that Cal game still had their best CB(I can't spell his name), and they still surrendered a ton of yards...

Was looking through the NCAA stats page, and noticed that after the VT debacle, we scored 42+ points in 11 of the subsequent 13 games, including 50+ points in six of those games and one game with 49 points. That's 47.5 points a game. The only games in that stretch where we didn't crack 40 points: The night game at PSU, and the coldest game of the year up in Minnesota. And IIRC, I think we left several easy TDs on the field at Minnesota. With a much-improved, experienced OL returning, Zeke back at running back, and Cardale and JT at QB (I'm thing Braxton goes ahead and makes the switch to H-back), our offense could be the best in the country...

Maybe, but will we have the speed to compete with the SEC?

I have a feeling we will hear that at least another 1,315,664,748,235,043 times from "analysts" between now and the next Championship Game.
