2014 NFL (Well, Browns, so, sorta "NFL") Draft Thread

Mack is a blessed pass rusher. He's your 'joker'. Putting 20lbs on him and forcing him to drop into coverage more than rush the QB is a disservice to your defensive scheme.

I can only imagine how this team would look had we taken Warmack instead of Mingo and invested in a pass rusher this year. (Barr, Clowney, Mack).

I guess I thought he was closer to 230 than to 250....he would be an upgrade over anything the Browns have at the OLB position probably, not that they are drafting him now.

If they had drafted Warmack they might have had holes big enough that even Richardson couldn't miss them. I'm guessing they didn't think Sheard would do as well moving to OLB. Looking back the pick could have been better used regardless of how good Mingo is.

I'll be honest - I was in the camp that Sheard's transition wouldn't have been quite as smooth. Sure, he had a few rough spots. Sure he blew a couple coverages but overall it wasn't the disaster many expected.

I was just relieved we didn't draft Geno.

http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/cfb/45952/349/2014s-quarterback-conundrum

Fantastic article from Rotoworld about the big four QB's that have been bandied about as first rounders (Bridgewater, Manziel, Bortles, and Carr). Certainly seems to confirm that Bridgewater is the cream of the crop in this class, but as a Browns fan, I would also be comfortable with Bortles or Manziel. Just say no to Derek Carr though.

I actually can't believe people are saying Houston might pick Bortles over Bridgewater. Of course it is early, but if that happens, I think St. Louis will just cream their pants with all the teams wanting to trade up to get him. And Hopefully the Browns actually finish the job and get Bridgewater if that were to happen.

I can live with Bortles... but Manziel... eh gad... he is going to be such a big bust at the NFL level.

The only reason I wouldn't mind Bortles is because having Hoyer in place for a year or so giving him the proper time to develop means worlds. As much as I'd love Mosley at ILB - Watkins would have a great opportunity to develop while Bortles sits and learns the playbook... (That he'll have to re learn in a year anyway).

Here is a quick list of my QB ranks with teams who I think will be aggressive towards them

1. Manziel (Jax & Cle....Jaguars need not only the position upgrade but the personality to drive ticket sales bad)
2. Bridgewater (Houston....seems too easy unless they feel Clowney is worth pairing with Watt)
3. Carr (Arizona would be a surprise team...after 10 wins they could still use the upgrade)
4. Hundley (Oakland would be nice, sit behind Pryor for a year and progress him into it...otherwise, who knows)
5. Fales (Could also see Oakland, AZ, or St. Louis)
6. McCarron (Could see Pittsburgh or GB go with a 'winner' for depth here)
7. Bortles (Someone willing to risk it, a la Minny?)
8. Brett Smith (Anywhere in the late 2nd or 3rd - who knows)
9. Boyd (If Houston did go Clowney, would expect Boyd to go 33rd to them)
10. Mettenberger (Anyone who wants a bust; NYJ)

Bridgewater and Bortles are the only ones in that list that's interesting to me.
They could hire Tebow now and save us the trouble of wasting a pick on Manziel.

I wouldn't have a first round grade on Bortles - now if the Browns went something other than QB at 4 and all the other QB's were gone at 26 except Bortles, then that's a different story. But I don't think he's a better prospect than the others.

Now, the Bengals should take him just to light a fire under Dalton :)

Sign me up. With Zimmer and Gruden gone now, the only hopes I have for the Bengals of ever winning a playoff game is a Dalton-less team.

But it will be interesting to see how this goes. I am not in the crowd thinking the Manziel will be a bust, he has made vast improvements to his passing game and is obviously prolific with his legs...even if he is a bust, it brings excitement to any of the Texans, Vikings, or Browns when they have nothing to be excited about right now. Bortles? Not so much unless his girlfriend moves to that city with him. I still don't know that I would take Manziel over Bridgewater but I wouldn't blame a team for doing so.

ProFootball Talk had an article up on mock's and Kiper's noting he had Damontre Moore going #2 overall last year when his first mock came out...unfortuntaely Mr. Moore went #81. I think Houston is in a great position though, they could go so many ways and wouldn't be wrong. If they want a QB they can take Bridgewater who is a pro style which fits O'Briens style or they could go with the local kid Manziel (although he doesn't seem to match the type of player the staff wants, personality wise or style wise). They could go Clowney and pair him with JJ and have an elite DL....or, they could trade down and grab some more ammo. Personally, I'd go with Teddy....fits too well with what they want to do.

Give me Bridgewater or Watkins at 4 and Hyde with the second round pick if he's there. If not great for him. If they go Watkins they will need to look at QB with the second first round pick if they like one of the remaining QB's if not wait till the 3rd and take the best QB on the board. If that's how it plays out take an ILB with the Colts pick and a CB with the other 3rd rounder.
