2014 Bowl Games Open Thread

This is what you don't understand - most Big Ten fans don't want to be talked up. They want to be on the same plane as everyone else. That has decidedly not been the case since 2006 and perhaps earlier.

This very forum has gone into great detail about ESPiN's war against Tressel in 2004. It's not a new thing. Add to that ESPiN's lowball offer to the B1G in the 2005 timeframe that essentially launched the BTN all by itself, and there you go.

It's not about Fox talking up the B1G or whoever, it's about ESPiN not being able to separate its journalistic enterprise from its business motives.
Espn didn't need to wage a war on tressel. He brought that stuff on himself and you guys are much better off without him. If they did wage war on him, they were helping you guys out.

Fox doesn't have the power for it to matter if they talk up a conference or team. Hell, when Paul finebaum started saying with about three weeks left in the season that he had OSU in his top four, people started listening, and that's a dude in the radio that has never played a snap and is basically a football version of Jerry springer.

Like hell - in the time frame referenced there was nothing there but a cell phone bill and a super-immature Maurice Clarett.

Paul who?

Couple things... Wisconsin should be ranked in the mid to high teens. They're a very physical team on both sides and I too will be watching that game to gain some sort of insight on our game.

As for ESPN fuck em... there's a reason financially strapped schools want in the B1G and its because we make a crap load of money. We don't need ESPN and while they may not need us either they need osu more than any non SEC school along with Texas because we bring money and ratings. We have the best of both worlds really with mega cash with the BTN and then ESPN going to bat for us over teams like TCU etc because they know we sell. Personally I love the position we are in.

As for Tressel I'm with you his undoing was his own fault but the 04 stuff was kind of weak. I'm a big believer in always do what is right and you will never fear your job and he slipped.

I skimmed up. I think a portion of you guys focus too much on ESPN. Saying ESPN waged war on anybody is over the top. Investigated heavily? yes. War? No.

Where you living it back at the time? Did you have to deal with Tressel is dirty type investigative "reporting" when not even the NCAA was looking for anything?

Thanks for the link. I will actually read it instead of just skimming.

You do that.

How good is their defense? It looks like they don't give up many points (usually).

That's an interesting viewpoint about your position with ESPN. It makes sense. You already have the name and prestige. TCU not selling out their allotment for the peach bowl proves it.

The 04 stuff was weak, but when put in the big picture it was not. It showed his mindset.

You do that.
ESPN is always going to be ahead of the NCAA. They are always the last to know.

As I look through those threads you linked. I see myself saying "I remember that, I don't remember that, I remember that and on and on". There was a lot of stuff that was rumor, but a lot of stuff stuck. The culture was wrong and tressel needed to go. It wasn't a war. Was there some piss poor journalism? Yup.

They don't, but like the anon B1G coach who wrote about Ohio State said... all the teams over there play power run. Auburn's offense is pretty dynamic imo... excellent receivers that make Marshall look good, good RB, QB than can run.
I think whoever shows up on the inept side wins - ie: Wiscy's QB-less offense vs. Auburn's sieve defense.
